I was visiting my inlaws and really wanted to have a BBQ baked potato. True Texas BBQ hit the spot! We were there after Christmas and it wasn't busy at all on a Friday at 5PM. You order on a touchscreen, so it was easy to make sure we customized our orders. It didn't take too long to get the food either. Note: make sure to get the sauce from the condiment area. The baked potatoes themselves weren't as big as I've had, but still very filling. I opted for chopped brisket with everything on it. I do think there could have been more cheese. My mother-in-law opted for a plain potato with just cheese and butter and she also commented on how hers didn't have much cheese on it. We also got the cornbread and when we first tried it, it was a bit hard. We nuked it in the microwave and that made it much better to eat. The first thing I noticed was you have to order off the screens now. I also noticed that that prices have went up but the portions are smaller. I don't know what happened. I used to go here quite often for wings, brisket sandwich, or a chopped beef potato. I backed of for awhile to return for a potato and it's like the kitchen accounting nazi's started working there. They moved to plastic boxes vs the paper they originally had plus the potato was small and they gave me about a tablespoon of beef where it used to be overflowing. The food is OK, typical for a BBQ restaurant. However, the recent change in ownership has resulted to two things. 1. Less service 2. Higher prices 1. Less service: Like other companies (McDonald's etc), they want you to input your order on a computer. However, this interface is less useful. The screen starts with the most expensive options and sizes. Large - small. What is small or large it's not displayed and other details about the order. They want your details too, pay cash they still want all contact information to complete the order. Only a corporate tool would love to order here. 2. Higher Prices: Two medium sandwiches with medium side, and two 16 oz soft drinks $45 + dollars. These prices given the service, defiles logic. Upon arrival was greeted with upmost kindness. Though once got my potato the meat was excellent but the potato was very dry. I requested meat only but truth is the potato had to be sitting under the light and gave a real dry look and taste. I took it to associate but no action was taken, very disappointed. I have eaten here numerous times. The barbecue has good flavor. The issue for me is that it's not hot. Not even warm. Very off putting. Went from the best years ago to fast food junk. Ribs were melt in your mouth and falling off bone. couldn't get enough. Then recipe changed and ribs had a gooey sugary hard crust like most fast food places. Then recently the crust on the ribs went from bad to worst with more thick crust than meat. This place is not consistent. Food is ok, but frequently have to speak with Manager about portions and instructions in packaging. Now charging fee if you want to go meat in a pan instead of butcher paper. I frequently get home and pound of meat is less than pound in my meat scale. Very stingy with portions, staff resisting giving sauce or condiments. Just not worth the price. Only reason we revisit is due to location and convenience. This was my second visit. I do like this restaurant concept inside of the HEB. I ordered the sauced brisket mac & cheese and saw someone else grab a banana pudding so I gave it a try too. The cashier and staff were nice and they got the food out fast. I did enjoy the brisket mac & cheese. There could have been a little more brisket on it, but I did enjoy all of the toppings. It gave it a nice crunch to it. The banana pudding wasn't sweet or flavorful enough for me. I would probably try this spot again and try their potatoes. read more

Our son and daughter in-law brought us here as our first stop upon arriving in Houston and my husband doesn't want to eat anywhere else. Yes, it was THAT good!! I really love the food here. The bbq is solid. My husband loves the brisket beans... and the brisket for that matter. The loaded cornbread is amazing as are the cobblers. So... why three stars? We originally had some issues with their lack of generosity on the onions and pickles. We would place a large order (over $100) and feel like we had to beg for more supplies. I have never been charged extra for sliced jalapeño peppers before going to this place. Every other BBQ restaurant provides Bbq sauce, pickles, onions and jalapeños with a sandwich. Not here. It was only .50 per sandwich, but still you fell being nickled and dimed. For the price, the portions seemed small. There are much better options in Kingwood. read more

We enjoyed our meal, the lean brisket was still moist and great flavor, the moist brisket was a little too much on the fatty side. We also enjoyed the creamed corn and Mac n cheese but not so much on the green beans. The beans had a heavy tomato taste, tasted like I was eating soup. The Mac n cheese was good, extremely gooey cheese if you like it that way. Next time I'll try the potatoes salad and cole slaw. The chicken was a great price for a large amount and was really flavorful. We didn't care for the sauces but the brisket doesn't need it anyway. Not very good, dry meat. Disappointed from the flavor and non fresh sides they were mainly canned beans corn and flavorless.

I've tried True Texas BBQ twice in the last week. I've experienced better. The sausage is greasy and a bit tough. The fatty brisket is sure enough fatty! Tender, but lots of fat. The "sweet" sauce is horrible. Worst I've had. Most of the BBQ joints in and around Austin have nothing to worry about. HEB has a long way to go to get it right. I live in lake charles but whenever I go home to visit, I always like to stop by H-E-B. I have eaten here several times and everytime the food has been great until today. I ordered 1lb of fatty brisket to take home for dinner. The brisket consists of two parts, the flat and point. The point is often referred to as fatty or moist at most places but it doesn't necessarily mean it's All fat. When I unwrapped the brisket, nearly the entire pound was fat and unedible. I was so disappointed because that was supposed to be our dinner and I always look forward to eating their food, plus, the food is typically on point. I'm not sure if this was due to being later in the afternoon or what but that was essentially $20 down the drain. Lesson learned, check your order prior to leaving if you get the fatty brisket. Besides today's experience, The brisket is moist and flavorful. The ribs are juicy and nicely sized. The beef rib is awesome but kind of expensive ($20) but then again, that's the going rate. The cornbread is awesome with the honey butter. 31DEC18 Update: I was asked for my contact information via Yelp and was told someone would call me. It's been over three weeks and still nothing.
