I did a lot of research to find the right piercer before getting my rook done, and I was so excited when I stumbled upon True Expression. They seemed like the place I was looking for. I even travelled to queens from manhattan even though there are endless piercing shops much closer all over nyc. But I knew I would feel most comfortable going to True Expression because they really seemed like the best place. I was not let down! First of all, I was running pretty late due to delayed transportation but they were so kind and moved my appointment for me over the phone and did not rush me when I arrived. The guys at the front desk were so kind and showed me all of the jewelry so I could choose my earring. You can tell they love what they do. It was a very pleasant and welcoming environment. Finally I met Paul who I've heard amazing things about, so I wasn't too nervous. He gave me fruit snacks because I hadn't eaten in 3-4 hours, and its better if you have some food in your stomach so you don't feel faint. I thought it was so nice of them to give me fruit snacks! Very much appreciated. As for the piercing itself, I had heard a wide range from other people's experiences and heard many say the rook was one of their most painful piercings. So I was anticipating some decent pain. I was SO shocked that I barely felt any pain. Only a pressure feeling. I credit Paul for doing a great job with it. No pain and no crunching sound. It has been healing like a dream so far. I still haven't felt any pain or throbbing. It feels like I've had the piercing there for months already, though I know it's still fresh and healing. I've even had no issues sleeping, as it hasn't caused any pain in the night. Really amazing experience! Oh they also do free checkups! Will probably end up getting another when I return :D read more

I cannot day enough about this place. I came to them through my cousin who recommended them to me after getting my industrial done in Astoria. It was a terrible experience. I went to Paul because my ear felt it and was extremely sensitive to touch. Although I didn't get it pierced there, he was willing to fix it. He took out what they put in, which apparently was the source of the issue. He also fixed another piercing I got done there and it has healed amazingly!! I literally ran in here today, causing a commotion (because I was late as usual) and the piercer Paul and front desk man Sergio were very friendly and patient with me! I only got my earlobes pierced but it went very well- practically painless! (I'm usually a wimp) They were both super sweet and gave me some snacks and water before the piercing, and this really shows how much they care about their clients- Paul is super informative and you can tell he is passionate and well educated in body piercings. Had such a great experience with Paul and Sebastian today. I found Paul through the APP website after discovering that the piercers I usually see had moved on from the previous shop (turns out they opened a new place, and the listing wasn't updated yet). Sebastian greeted me as soon as I walked in, had me fill out the necessary paperwork, and walked me through jewelry choices. We talked a little bit about what I was having done (daith), and what made me make that choice. I didn't realize that he was apprenticing until he came in the room with me for the procedure. I was immediately blown away with the transparency in sterilization, and the heavy emphasis that Paul puts on a clean, safe environment. His love of qtips and betadine is unmatched - I'm the daughter of a nurse (mom) and a diabetic with foot issues (dad), so I've seen my fair share of wound care over the years. Paul thoroughly inspected my ears, making sure that my anatomy would be well-suited to heal the piercing. He disinfected it multiple times, made his marks, and explained the whole process as he was working. The jewelry is sterilized in the room in front of you, and even has an indicator of being good to go on the outside. While we were waiting for the jewelry to be ready, we had a casual chat about travel, and shared a bonding moment over our mutual love of gin and Dutch french fries. Definitely took the edge off of my nerves, since I've heard that the daith piercing is no joke in terms of pain level. When it came time for the actual piercing to happen, Paul was great about talking me through breathing and letting me know what was going on. It wasn't bad at all. He made sure that I sat up slowly, and made me stay seated for a few minutes afterwards. He finished up with a final round of cleanup, very detailed care instructions, and gave me a helpful card of what was in my ear, when to come back for a check, and potential downsize options. Got my tragus pierced here. They have standard of the art sterilization machine where they sterilize all the jewelry & equipment. I also bought their spray to keep infections, germs & bacteria at bay - it really helps! They also have titanium jewelry so that's an extra added bonus if people are sensitive to certain metals. The piercer is extremely patient, informed & very knowledgeable in everything under the sun about piercing. I highly recommend this place if you're a first time piercer or someone who has a lot of piercing under their belt. I'm going to go back to get my daith piercing! Only just left this amazing place and I thought I had to leave my experience. I had been looking for a dedicated piercing place in Queens as opposed to going into the city. Not that those shops aren't great just didn't want the commute. So when I came across True Expression I was excited. The reviews on here and thoroughness on their website impressed me right off the bat. Not to mention that they are a certified APP business so you know that you're in good hands. I had been wanting to get my nose pierced and change out my nipple rings pierced elsewhere. Finally went in this weekend to find out that Sunday's were appointment only but was able to make an appointment or walk in Tuesday, since Monday was Memorial Day. They don't have rows and rows of jewelry selection but what they do have is impressive. Some selections are a little pricey so be aware of that ahead of time. You do pay for what you get though; the options are beautiful. I picked out a very simple white gold nose stud. Krista was extra thorough in everything she did. They clean your jewelry in the autoclave right in front of you. She walked me through everything she was going to do before she did it. I laid down for the nose piercing and honestly the least painful of ALL my piercings or tattoos and I have my nipples pierced and a tattoo on my foot. She also gives you a card with aftercare info as well as the info of your jewelry. They even have you come in monthly for check ups like a doctors office! Overall I would highly recommend going here for any piercing need or even to get your jewelry changed if you have old piercings you want to update. read more

I'm a little delayed in my review but I was reminded to write one after getting my helix piercing checked at another establishment (also 4-5 stars in my book). My piercing by Krista is bangin'. I LOVE it. It has a great placement and I've followed through on the aftercare and it has been healing so nicely. I really appreciated her attention to proper glove-wearing procedure. She thoroughly washed her hands and put on gloves and did not touch anything else except for what is sterile and my skin. I cringe when I see people in the health industry and food service industry put on gloves then use their cell phone, write with a pen, type on a computer, handle money (GROSS!) and then attempt to handle my food or perform an exam on me. rant over. It just goes to show how impressed I am with the service. I found their jewelry selection to be a little small but my sisters and I still found the jewelry that we were looking for. You can make an appointment-- not all places do this! Other people have said that this place is a little pricey but I believe it is worth it for those of us who worry about sanitation. Their aftercare sheet with information about the jewelry type, size, material, etc made it easy and seamless to change the fitting at another place. (The piercers there were really impressed! ) I'm considering another piercing and would return here and also highly recommend it to others. read more

Went to get my septum pierced here about 4 weeks ago! Paul was so nice and accommodating! I was nervous because I have an allergy to nickel but he assured me that I wasn't going to have a problem. Getting a piercing here was absolutely fantastic. It was my first one and I was really excited but my mom had had a really bad experience with her helix piercings (she got it done with a gun). Paul was wonderful! Very patient and thorough in explaining what he is going to do and why he uses the tools that he does. I needed new jewelry and a clean of my old piercing that I got somewhere else. I've always had a hard time healing from the piercings that I've had from other companies. Paul suggested jewelry that would resolve my issue and the wound wash that would aid my healing. This whole time I thought something was wrong with my body's reaction to piercings but I'm already healing and feeling great about the not only beautiful but also safe jewelry I got from the store.
