JAMAICAN + JAMAICAN CHINESE... IN THE MIDDLE OF WEST BOCA RATON?!?!?!…read more I almost can't believe I'm writing this review. If you know me, you know how hard I am on food down here because it is NEVER like NYC. I've been searching for those flavors for eight years and have been disappointed over and over again. Well... NOT THIS TIME. The fact that this place is serving authentic Jamaican food AND Jamaican Chinese food right in the middle of WEST BOCA RATON?!?!?! Where have you been all my life?! From the moment we walked in, Jerome, the owner, and everyone working there were INCREDIBLE. So welcoming, friendly, attentive, and genuinely excited about the food they're serving. The hospitality alone deserves five stars. But THE FOOD?!?! Hands down, the best Jamaican and Jamaican Chinese food I've had since leaving NYC eight years ago. Everything was flavorful, well-seasoned, fresh, and plentiful. We clearly ordered like we were feeding an entire army , but I wanted to try EVERYTHING! And looking at this spread, I think we came pretty close. And now for the statement that may get me in trouble with my NYC people... I actually think it's BETTER than The Door!!! Yes. I SAID IT. If you know The Door in Queens, you understand just how serious that statement is. IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW! Finding food like this would have made me happy anywhere in South Florida. But finding it in the middle of WEST BOCA?!?! I'm still shocked. Jerome and his team have something really special here--incredible hospitality, authentic Jamaican flavors, Jamaican Chinese favorites, generous portions, and food that finally gave this NYC girl the taste of home I've been missing for EIGHT YEARS. And yes... officially YARDIE APPROVED! We WILL be back--and I already know this is about to become one of our regular spots! #YardieApproved #JamaicanFood #JamaicanChinese #WestBoca #WestBocaRaton #BocaRatonEats #SouthFloridaEats #CaribbeanFood #NYCFoodie #QueensFoodie #TheDoorQueens #IfYouKnowYouKnow #FoodieFind #SupportLocalRestaurants

For starters I ordered jerk pork and was given jerk chicken. Fine. Whatever. I really wanted the pork but I like chicken too. The chicken had zero jerk flavor. And when I say zero, I mean absolutely nothing. No spice. No pimento, thyme, garlic, ginger....nothing. It legit just tasted like grilled chicken. Insanely disappointing. I also ordered a side of their "special sauce" which I paid for and never received. Maybe that would have helped but I'll never know. I also got their curry chicken plate. Again....zero flavor at all. And no curry sauce to speak of. Just lightly coated yellow pieces of chicken that seemed like they just cooked it in turmeric and water. Horrible. The gunga peas and rice tasted like cardboard. Thank god I had some pepper sauce I made a few days ago because if I didn't this entire meal would have been borderline inedible. With all the great Caribbean restaurants we have down here I will absolutely never recommend (no) Flavors Caribbean to anyone.

We came here for lunch…read more I started with their cocktail de camarones. It was excellent. Large, firm shrimp in a sauce of ketchup, onions, cilantro and citrus juice. The five shrimp were poached and served cold. The sauce was slightly sweet. And although there were a lot of chopped onions in it, they were not strong or overpowering. And I liked that their version of the sauce was without mayonnaise. Along with the cocktail came some warm thin slices of fried plantains -- bigger than chips but smaller than chunks. The plantains were a nice accompaniment. I had a beef empanada after the shrimp cocktail. And added a side order of thin and crispy french fries. The empanada was just okay. My husband had their perro combo -- a hot dog Latin American style. The hot dog was in a bun and was covered with bacon, cheese, pink sauce, ketchup, quail eggs, pineapple sauce, and potato sticks. It came with a metal basket of french fries and a soda. He said it was good, but gloppy. I'm glad we came to try them. We realized after eating here that we'd been to their sister restaurant in Greenacres. Service was good. We'd come back if craving a bit of Colombian cuisine.

They have a large and quite varied menu. They describe their menu as Cuban based, but it's so much more than that. Their specialty seems to be seafood as they offer several types of fish prepared in a wide range of ways. For example, they have 6 different snapper entrees as well as grouper, salmon, tuna, scampi, shrimp and mixed seafood dishes. Our friends each thoroughly enjoyed their coconut grouper, which was accompanied by a side of rice and grilled veggies. The fish was fresh and delicious. One person had the conch chowder, which was hearty and a bit spicy. It was delightful and filling. Enigma also offers steaks, chicken, paellas, and pasta dishes. (I wasn't kidding when I said their menu was eclectic). My husband and I shared the chicken parmesan with pasta and the vodka penne with chicken. Both dishes were excellent. The chicken was tender and the sauces were both very good. I thoroughly enjoyed the vodka sauce on the penne pasta. The dinners all came with a side salad that had a nice mix of ingredients and an Italian dressing. We split a carafe of Enigma's specialty red sangria. No wonder it's so popular. Both fruity and flavorful. The husband and wife team that run the restaurant are very nice. She runs the front-of-house and he is the chef. He even delivers the meals to the tables, so guests have a chance to meet him and thank him for his delicious preparations. Enigma is now on my "visit again soon" list.

I'm rounding my rating up to four stars because this place is a favorite for my grandparents and…read moreremains an excellent value. Every meal starts with basic bread rolls and butter, which I don't personally eat, and each entree includes a small starter salad. On this visit, I ordered the classic snapper broiled and substituted potatoes for the rice. As expected, the portion was quite generous. I actually preferred this broiled preparation over the grilled version I had previously; it seemed to use less oil but was perfectly seasoned. The potatoes were flavorful and well-cooked, and while the sautéed vegetables were fairly basic, they rounded out the plate well. My snapper came with an island sauce on the side, but the fish was flavorful enough on its own that I skipped it to keep the meal a bit healthier. I also sampled my grandpa's order, the Snapper Florentine special. It was very good, featuring a bright lemony sauce and a rich spinach-and-cheese stuffing. While the stuffing meant there was slightly less fish than the standard entree, the portion was still substantial. That being said, I have hesitations regarding the quality of the fish and oils used here. Even though it's a "light" meal, my stomach occasionally feels a little off afterward, so it may not quite meet the highest quality standards. I personally wouldn't return without my grandparents asking me to go, but, it's still a reliable and filling meal. I'll likely try either the roasted half chicken next time or stick with the broiled snapper, which I prefer out of everything I've tried so far.
