My two friends and I happened to stroll by this shop at the beginning of our 1 week road trip. We passed the store and immediately came back because the decor appealed to us. We went in to check it out and were greeted and helped by Cihat (pronounced see-ah-t). We were given samples and the story behind the treats. I glanced at the price of $27.99/pound and proceeded to ask for a box of an assortment of both lokum and baklava. We were in a celebratory mood for my friend's graduation, hence the road trip, and I decided to splurge a bit as a gift to him. I imagined I'd end up paying about $60 or so. Cihat ended up stuffing the first box with as much lokum as he could and keep saying "don't worry I give to you", I got nervous when he got out a second box and started to fill it with baklava after having asked him to put an assortment of both in one box only. However, he kept saying "I give to you" there was no tension between us and Cihat worked quickly. I imagined we were getting many items on the house since I wasn't asking for that much. I thought he was being awfully generous. When he rang me up, he said, in a joking manner mind you, "I hope you have enough to pay and I give you $10 discount" and said it was $150. We all laughed, handed him a card, paid and left. We didn't realize he wasn't joking until later that night when we saw the price tags on the box. OMG $80 for one and $70 for the other one!!!! We had fallen for it with his charm and swiftness. He tricked us and filled two boxes after I repeatedly told him just one box. We were in disbelief, it was only the $10 that were on the house. We weren't looking for freebies and he didn't have to give us a discount but we weren't looking for gimmicks and lies either.
Fortunately, got a lot of good laughs from it throughout our entire trip. It became the top inside joke. We joked around about bartering it as prized goods and even took turns safely escorting and caring for the boxes in and out of the car lol. If any of us were comedians we'd definitely be using this as a bit in our comedy special.
It is true what other reviewers say, it is not made at this shop, it's imported from Turkey, as per Cihat. This stuff is expensive and a little goes a long way. Despite the inside joke never getting old, the treats quickly did. We got waaaaaay too much for 3 people. Most of it is ok, on the verge of tasty. Just a little taste is more than enough. Some of the lokum are chewier and tough and bland like the banana one and the chocolate one. Some are soft and good in flavor like the hazelnut one. The rose petal is interesting. The pistachio baklava is good, the walnut one was ok. But overall both were too soggy. I suggest you try anything you're considering buying.
TL;DR
**BUYER BEWARE: don't underestimate the weight of these treats, know how much you want to spend before asking for anything!!! They have regular boxes and small boxes. $27.99/pound. I paid $150 for 2 boxes (not on purpose). Taste is ok, definitely not worth the price though.
**Knowing what I know now I probably would have given him a dollar amount and said to give me that amount's worth of treats. HOWEVER, I won't be returning to this place. It's overpriced for an ok quality, nothing special much less out of this world and I don't appreciate Cihat's selling scheme. When we realized the amount we paid and that it was clearly a mistake it was too late to go back but I'm reaching out to him privately to dispute part of this transaction. I can not recommend this place. read more
