How much do I love Nico's? Ummm, I came here three days in a row and I'm lactose intolerant. And, it would have been four days but having bubble guts on the drive home...a pop and squat on the side of 101. Probably not the move. In 2021, Nico started his business as a pushcart in Portland. It was so well received that by fall, he opened his first brick and mortar. He now he has four locations including two in CA: Monterey and Santa Cruz. Nico's serves New Zealand Style Ice Cream aka real fruit ice cream. Using a special machine: Little Gem, frozen fruit is blended into hard-packed Tillamook vanilla ice cream creating a custom blended soft serve. Fair warning, if you prefer sugary treats and desserts, Nico's may not hit for you. Fruit Choices: * Monday-Wednesday, Weekends: Strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry * Thursdays only: Banana, mango, and pineapple Toppings (50 cents each) * Sprinkles, coconut flakes, graham crackers, tajín, and chamoy Sizes: * Kid's cone: $6 * Cup: $7 * Waffle cone: $8 They also have bottled water and lactaid for $1 each. MY PICKS (1) Banana w/ coconut flakes (Cup-$7.50) Not sure what sorcery this is but the machine whips up a deliciously creamy, thicccc, and dense soft serve with no air pockets. The banana soft serve low-key tasted like banana pudding with a nutty crunch from the cooconut. So good. As someone who usually can't finish a junior scoop of ice cream because it gets too sweet, I couldn't stop eating this. I especially loved how natural it tasted... lightly sweet, letting the banana flavor really shine. (2) Blueberry w/ graham crackers (Cup-$7.50) Smooth and creamy with bursts of natural sweet tang. The bits of blueberry skin adds a fresh fruit texture. Wish they were more liberal with the graham crackers for a blueberry pie vibes but nonetheless, we enjoyed it. (3) Strawberry (Cup-$7) With strawberry season in full swing, the strawberry soft serve is sweetest of the three but still light and natural. If you like strawberries and cream, this will be your jam. S E R V I C E Friendly and quick. All three visits, there was no line which I don't understand. A M B I A N C E Takeout only. No seating. Overall, as someone who finds most ice cream overly sweet, Nico's really hit the spot. I loved how natural the flavors tasted - they were subtle, well-balanced, and still incredibly satisfying. To the owner: PLEAAAASEE consider expanding to the Bay Area!
What a delicious sweet treat we stumbled upon during our visit to Cannery Row! The ice cream is creamy and satisfying. The only negative for me was not chocolate shavings as a topping!
Love that there is a Nico's in monterey!! There is counter seating for ~3 parties inside. The strawberry is great! Consistency is smooth and not too sweet at all. The graham cracker topping was just fine powder and tasteless, would just skip this next time
Went here after the aquarium and walking around the fishermans wharf for a sweet treat and was not disappointed! It wasnt overly sweet and was super refreshing! The customer service was meh but its very like self explanatory as they just put fresh fruit in the machine with soft serve. It however was pricey as it was $8.50 for one scoop in a cup with flake toppings. However definitely a better option in healthy and fresh dessert in the area! Worth checking out!

She scooped the frozen strawberries and vanilla ice cream into the machine and voilà! Real fruit blended with yummy ice cream coming out in a soft serve style. It was refreshing it and delicious and you can definitely taste the real fruit. Service was quick. The place is really cute and I like the signage and decor. It's funny that they sell lactaid! It's in a shopping plaza on Cannery Row. We walked from our hotel.
Nico's has such a calm vibe, and the ice cream tastes fresh in the best way. The service was great. The strawberry and raspberry mix was perfect it wasn't too sweet, just how I like it.

The worker was very kind and told us a bit about how the icecream is make , it's mixed of real fruit and vanilla icecream. I wish nothing but success to the owner!
Nico's is a nice stop in after the aquarium. They imported a special ice cream machine that spins your base with a fruit. It meshes perfectly and tastes fresh. The staff member who helped us was courteous and explains what the machine is & explains the whole thing. The inside is no frills, bar stools, and chill. The highlight is being able to watch the machine in action while sitting.
We were looking for a dessert after a very nice dinner this evening - but he restaurant's desserts were lacking. I continue being disappointed recently with restaurants' dessert menus. We left the Cannery Row establishment looking for ice cream - we found only 2 choices. 1) Dippin Dots - which shouldn't count as legitimate ice cream, and 2) Nico's - which was amazing! It's 'simply' made, taking a great vanilla custard base and adding only blueberries. However, the mixing machine whips it in such a way, the texture and flavor is incredible. It's a little gem in Cannery Row, and a must try!
8.4/10 Both flavors were great, but I particularly liked the strawberry more since it was sweeter! I enjoyed the texture from the fruit, which definitely made it unique. The only downside was that it wasn't the sweetest more like a sorbet but I still enjoyed it because it was soft serve. Service was quick and efficient, and the place was nice and clean. I also enjoyed the ambiance, especially the kids' artwork on the walls, which gave it a unique and charming touch.
I happened to be walking down the street on Cannery Row and saw Nico's. I didn't know they had expanded from Portland to Monterey. Anyways, I stopped by and got a kids cone with raspberry ice cream and graham cracker dust. Flavors were delicious, ice cream was creamy and loved the fresh fruit mix.
This simple ice cream spot offers just a handful of flavors where their specialty is to mix in dried fruits into vanilla soft serve. It's quite simple but the flavor is pretty tasty and fresh on a hot day. The servers were nice in explaining the mechanism of their ice cream machine, and there's some bar seating where you can watch the server mix in fruit. It's coastal spot with lots of pictures on the walls that children have colored.

Haiku: Nico's Ice Cream Freshly mixed ice cream You can choose real fruits to mix A healthy dessert! --- If we were staying longer in Monterey, I'd come back every day to Nico's Ice Cream. I absolutely loved the real strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries mixed into luscious vanilla ice cream. It was perfectly bright, sweet, tart, and creamy. Best of all, it's made to order and such a healthy treat! Service is sweet. This cute little shop is more of a grab-and-go, and I don't remember seeing many tables. It's in a great location--the heart of Monterey and close walking distance to spectacular bay views. read more
this little ice cream shop was right next to my hotel in monterey bay, and i had to try it out after seeing the cute logo hehe. i was also super intrigued by the concept of new zealand style real fruit ice cream since i hadn't tried it before! i came on a thursday, which i didn't realize limited the flavors to only their tropical thursday offerings (mango, pineapple, & banana), so i was a bit sad not being able to try the blackberry flavor. however, the mango was still really yummy! i would say that the mango flavor itself is not super strong since it is easily overpowered by the vanilla soft serve, but that could just have been the real mangoes themselves not being super sweet. what made me really love this ice cream tho was how smooth and dense it was !! it was so thick and creamy, and the vanilla flavor was so prominent and yummy. i also loved the bits of fruit mixed into the ice cream. i would definitely try the other flavors if i'm ever in the area again! service was super quick and efficient! there was a little bit of a line when i came since big parties stopped by, but the worker was so fast at assembling the ice cream while also keeping conversation with the customers! read more

Found Nico's on again after waking around Cannery from the aquarium on my birthday trip. The fruit tastes fresh and the flavors are sweet creamy and tart. It's so good we went back for another serving! Defiantly have to bring an insulated cooler to bring some home next time read more

The ice cream is super light and creamy. There are limited fruit flavors, but they can also serve plain vanilla or chocolate ice cream as well if you're not a fan of fruit. Overall love the simplicity and creaminess of ingredients. read more
Interesting spot! The real fruit ice cream is definitely legit, very creamy and smooth, with berry seeds mixed in. The consistency is soft and velvety. A bit pricier than I think it should be, and there is no seating inside, so it is more of a grab-and-go place. One thing to note is that they re-use the mixer after each serving, so my ice cream had hints of other fruit flavors, which felt like cross-contamination. Worth trying at least once, but something to keep in mind! read more

Kaydee was awesome, running us through the menu and making sure we were taken care of and making our order swiftly. The bar style seating is fun and you can watch your ice cream get made right in front of you. Also it's delicious! Highly recommend. read more

Fantastic, fruity ice cream. I chose the blueberry cup, and it was more than enough for both my husband and I together. They are very generous with the portion, and it was not too sweet. Would check out again coming back to Monterey. read more

I saw high rating and thought I wanted to try real fruit ice cream. I came on Thursday so I got mango ice cream without topping. There is real fruit, but the vanilla/cream base wasn't flavorful. It is more bland than I would like. The staff are nice and explained the flavors though. read more
I found this place on Yelp while browsing ice cream places, and it did not disappoint. I was actually expecting a typical soft serve but this tasted more like yogurt, which I didn't mind at all. I liked that it's not as sweet as soft serve and it does feel a bit "healthier." Would definitely come back! read more

The customer service is fantastic, when I walked in the cashier already ready to help. I told the cashier I was not ready and cashier replied nicely. Take your time! After ordering, I saw a signed said birthdays get free ice cream or 7 days after. Pretty nice of the store owner to offer the length to claim the birthday gift. Over very satisfied with service and the ice cream with real fruits is also great. read more
Good service and atmosphere, enjoyable experience, good location and ice cream has a good flavor and natural with actual pieces of berries, is refreshing and creamy but not heavy. It made for a nice stop on my afternoon walk on Cannery Row. The blackberry is delicious, I wasn't sure what chamoy was so I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. read more

This was my first time at Nico's ice cream. My family drove in from San Jose for an aquarium visit and got a card for a free kids cone so I thought why not. They have a relatively simple menu but what they do serve, they do well. My mom and I both ordered blackberry ice cream with tajin. The ice cream had a lot of flavor without being overly sweet and the sugar cone was fresh. Their shop is small but homey and smells delicious. Looked more like a small corridor than an ice cream shop. So, you have to stand out in the hallway when you're in line. We were greeted with a small and a friendly face when we walked in. All in all, we will definitely be coming back to try the other flavors. read more

We saw the sign that said real fruit ice cream and being health-conscious but yet wanting a sweet cold treat it peaked our interest. Day at the counter was super friendly and knowledgeable and told us this was a unique type of ice cream from New Zealand where they blend vanilla ice cream with real fruit of your choice. My husband got the Blackberry flavor and absolutely loved it! Too bad they only had two stores in California both of which are Northern California and then some in Colorado as we live in southern california. Maybe they'll consider opening a shop in OC?! read more

If you love soft serve ice cream and fruit flavored ice cream, you'll LOVE Nico's! It is in my top 3 best ice creams I've ever had! I literally came back in less than 30 minutes to get another flavor option a try! It was so delicious and refreshing! The ice cream is made with fresh frozen fruit, and made right in front of you! The service was amazing! The ambiance was super cute and had many picture opportunities! read more

I've been wanting to try this place this past summer but when I came by it was still under construction. So, of course I had to go the second I heard this place had already opened! Interior was a great vibe! They had drawings on their back wall which I believe kids (and maybe adults too) had colored which was a great touch. A very small shop located in the back corner of the building. It takes the term "hidden gem" literally. Staff were very friendly and took the time to explain their ice cream and how it works. Basically, it's infused with real fruit hence the limited flavors. But don't let that stray you away!! Their ice cream is so refreshing and has the perfect amount of hinted tart to it. I got a kids cone and it was the perfect size. My friend was telling me they also had a mango and pineapple flavor last time they went. I saw a review that posted a picture of a sign for "Tropical Thursdays", which I assume they have it available then. I chose strawberry with coconut flakes and this might be my go to order already. The coconut flakes add a great texture to the ice cream- if you're sensitive to its taste don't fret! It didn't over power the flavor of the ice cream at all and I honestly barely tasted it. The ice cream tasted great in 50 degree weather at 7pm right next to the ocean. And I'm sure it'll taste even better during the hotter days. Rain or shine- their ice cream is a hit! I'd like to think this as a new staple place to go to especially to those who are just visiting Cannery Row. read more
