He's been going to Sharkey's in Gaithersburg since he was born, and even when he's had a really hard time and cried or had a big reaction, the staff has always been so patient and understanding. He's scared of loud noises, so haircuts can definitely be a challenge, but they've never made us feel bad or uncomfortable about it. Tiffany was especially great with him. She was patient, gentle, and really took her time to make him feel comfortable. It meant a lot to see him actually enjoy his haircut this time. We'll definitely keep coming back!

I called to reschedule my child's appointment and was immediately told there would be a $15 cancellation fee. When I explained that I wasn't canceling, I was given a supposed 4-5 hour notice policy that appears nowhere in their appointment communications. I then asked if there was availability later that day and was told they were fully booked today and tomorrow. After I said I would check online myself, I was abruptly placed on hold without a word. No explanation. Within minutes of checking online, I found multiple openings later that same day and plenty of availability the next day. Customers should not have to fact-check your staff. I was told there was no availability when there clearly was. Call it what you want, but giving customers information that is demonstrably false is unacceptable. As a dad trying to manage a busy schedule, I expect honesty, professionalism, and basic respect. I received none of the above. Love our stylist, Botum, though. She's great with my son and gives excellent cuts.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR BABY OR TODDLER HERE!…read more We booked our 19 month old son his first haircut appointment. We walked in expecting a child-friendly environment, but it's just a normal barber shop, with normal seats, but with paintings on the walls and TVs at each station. We signed up specifically for baby's first haircut and we reiterated that it was our son's first haircut before starting. The barber put absolutely no effort getting our son comfortable and just went in on him, telling us to forcibly hold him down. We expected the haircut to take maybe 15-20 minutes, but we were done in 5 minutes since our barber couldn't have cared less and just starting buzzing away despite us saying we just wanted a trim. Our son ended up looking like Mark Davis (pic attached for reference). His hairline is now at the top of his head and the rest of his hair is uneven as if he took safety scissors to his own head. Needless to say we are never going back and would not recommend anyone take their child. NOT TO MENTION it was $30 for the 5 minute botch job, more than I pay for my own haircut at the barber shop.

I would've given 5 stars if the prices were clearly stated in the beginning. All stylists should make it a point to briefly discuss the price of the services for the day since the website doesn't seem to be inclusive of all services and not clear. There doesn't seem to be a price list posted in the salon either. Our first visit was on a Monday evening so it was not crowded at all. Glad the salon moved away from the mall after reading some older posts. Will be back!

The woman we encountered was probably one of the most miserable people I have come across in a children's hair establishment. When we first walked in we were so happy and excited. I simply asked the woman if she could tell me the prices and services offered. She barely glanced at us and told me I could look it up on google. Seriously? Lol. So even then my daughter was so excited that I didn't care. I told her we wanted wash cut and blowout. I also inquired about the glitter strands they advertised. She was just such an unhappy woman. She looked miserable and didn't even bother talking to my daughter. My daughter kept glancing over at me because she was so uncomfortable. After a long time the woman told me she was finished and my daughter's hair looked awful. I asked her why it wasn't styled etc and she said oh that's because it's extra and I'm trying to go home. I told her I did not care about paying extra and this was the service we wanted so she went back and styled her hair and took over 30 mins applying the glitter strands. We came to this location a few years ago and it was nothing like this. I truly hope the owner sees this review and makes some changes because that miserable woman doesn't need to be working with kids. Oh and to top it off when we were checking out she chose her own rating lol. She gave herself 5 stars on the screen. I will add that they are supposed to include nail polish etc with the service and it wasn't even offered.

As a lifelong brunette who has been coloring her hair for decades, I recently made the…read moreuncomfortable decision to go gray. With John K. at New Wave Salon in my corner, I felt confident that this was going to work. During our consultation in April he described the whole process and instructed me to let about 2" of the natural color grow in so he could match the tone. In August he spent a full day to implement the transition. Not only did he explain the process step-by-step, but he also made sure I understood the range of results I might see. I couldn't be happier. John was patient, thoughtful about what would work best, and made sure he did nothing to damage my hair. The results speak for themselves. Without reservation, I am recommending John for complex coloring work. I'd also like to share that I was mortified with the prospect of letting the gray show while I was growing it out. At first I tried to cover it up with coloring sprays and hats, but eventually nothing concealed the amount of gray that came in. I was pleasantly surprised by the encouragement I received from family, friends, acquaintances and strangers who freely and continually told me how much they liked my 2-tone look. This made each day leading up to my transformation with John so much easier. My advice for others who are contemplating going natural is, trust the process, and trust John. An encouraged reader asked me to provide info about the cost. I've never had my hair professionally colored so I don't know what the standard cost for coloring is, but this was likely well beyond that. One factor is that it took a full day of John's time with only short rest periods between applications, washing, and blow drying (which occurs between each step so the chemicals are absorbed by dry hair). Another factor is that it depends on variables including how your hair reacts to the chemicals, what chemicals can safely be used without damaging your hair, and how many processes are needed not only to strip the old color but potentially add low lights if quasi-darker tones remain. All this before the silver tint, potentially a glaze top coat, and a final blow out. It's likely that your colorist will provide a complimentary consultation before you start letting the gray grow out. You can ask questions about timing and expected cost range at that time.
