Probably not going back... Not only my kid's lightning didn't look like a lightning but also the hair dresser kept saying that it happened because he moved. I am sure that was the reason. I've been going to Ping since our boys first haircut and have been going religiously since. She does an excellent job, is quick but uses all the tools for the best fade I've seen on a kid. She uses the clippers, different type of scissors for layering, etc. As soon as the lil one fidgets she is able to distract him with a toy or put on a video. I've never seen our boy sit so still and well behaved but for some reason he loves Ping! He's over 2 years old now and still wants to go to her as it is more of a fun event. At the end, she gives him a balloon and he knows to give her the sign for "thank you". Ping is simply the best and I wished she cut my hair, one day I'll have to ask. The cost for the cut is 18 bucks and may seem pricey, but most kids cuts are and the fact that he sits still, gets an excellent haircut then it's all worth it. I'm not sure about the other hair stylists there but If you ask for Ping, you won't regret it. I am torn by writing this review because if she becomes too popular than we will lose our schedule! read more

I took my daughter here today for a walk in, and they were able to fit her in with minimal wait time. The woman working at the front desk was friendly and nice, and Ping did a phenomenal job. I will definitely be returning with my daughter (and my sons, if they ever grow hair)! He also wanted a star shaved in but she said how about an exaggerated Z & he was all for it. She asked what he was into & she guessed right he loves Spider-Man. She was able to play a Spider-Man movie for him. Which I thought was great. It helped him sit still. He loved his haircut and how the Z turned out. It was $21 btw & we add another $5 for tip. On August 2016, I took my son to get a haircut. The cut was okay. The horrible thing was that he got FUNGUS! My poor child :-( he is loosing his hair and he is taking antibiotics for two months. I stopped by and told them but I never heard back from anybody . As a result , I feel that I should report them for it. Terrible experience . We've had good experiences here after trying a couple other adult-centered salons. I think the quality of the cut is better. However, and perhaps this has to do COVID, and I understand, but wow, the same haircut which was a trim with a couple of layers, is costing double what we paid about 3 years ago. $40 for a child cut without a wash, and taking less than 30 min is a lot, IMO. I will come here again once things resume and I hope the price also goes back to "normal". read more

This review is only for Ping! Ping is a rockstar. I take my son to the yellow ballon everytime he needs a haircut and he has been attended by almost everyone there. Ping is very patient and very precise. My son was never uncomfortable or squirmy when she cut his hair. He is three years old and came here from his new born haircut. The hispanic lady(sorry forgot her name) is also very good. I would rate yellow ballon a 4 star for service and a 3 in terms of interior and cleanliness/appeal. But they do have kids toys and a pop corn maker and a ballon after its all done to keep the kids happy. read more

This is a great establishment and I would highly recommend it to other parents for their kids' haircuts! I got a business card randomly and then happened to walk by as we were hanging out in the Kentlands on a Friday afternoon around 3pm. They didn't look too busy so we walked in. We waited about 5 minutes in their play area with toys and coloring, and they even had a water cooler, which was great for the hot weather. There's a motorcycle that little kids can ride on while getting their haircut so that was perfect for our little guy! Our stylist was Ping and she is amazing! She was really fast, and was able to get the job done even while he was fidgeting around. We are super happy with the cut, will post pics soon! Ping tried to use clippers to do a little fade too, but the sound freaked out our little guy a little. But the cut turned out great anyways. We'll definitely be coming back to Ping from now on. I would recommend an appointment though. And it was $18 for the cut, which I think is well worth it because of the toys and the environment and the speed! Oh and you can pay on credit card but tip has to be in cash! They will let you do it the first time but not after. read more

Cecilia (sp?) cut my four year old's hair, and she did a fantastic job. Handled her crying jag like a pro. She also gave us a lot of good advice on how to handle certain hair issues. Definitely coming back (even if my daughter doesn't want to). There are TVs so that kids can watch shows to distract them (we tried Dora... Sadly, it didn't work). Nice little play area. I took my 3 (almost 4) year old for a haircut here. I've been cutting his hair for the past 2.5 years, but the hair prickling his neck always upset him so he became disinclined towards haircuts. We thought we'd try something new and take him some place geared towards kids. The overall the experience was ok. My son wiggled a bit and was scared, but no tears were shed. When our stylist was done, I asked if it could be shorter. After she went back, my husband wanted it to be even shorter, but we left it at that since the stylist mentioned that his hair would stick up in the back. When it came time to pay, I pulled up a coupon for from their website on my phone, but they would not honor it because it wasn't printed. I'm sorry, but in the age of mobile phones and mobile coupons, no one prints things anymore so that was irritating. My husband was not happy with the cut and after a closer inspection, the front is uneven so I will have to fix it at home. Most people with positive reviews had Ping cut their kid's hair (she didn't cut my son's hair) so maybe ask for her if you decide to go in. read more

They were OK, although more expensive than anyone else around. I had the same stylist for the last 25 years, starting at another location. She moved here when the place opened to help the owner out. But after taking time off to protect herself from COVID-19, she was told she was no longer welcome there. My stylist bent over backwards to move here (it was much farther from her house than the her old location and she lost many of her regulars when she came here). But the owners don't care about that. I have been bringing the little man to this place since his second haircut and he's 2.5 yrs old now. the first haircut (at another salon not appropriate for kids) was traumatizing. I am so glad I found out about The Yellow Balloon. Ms. Emily has been cutting his hair since our first time here and she is Amazing! quick, professional, caring, listens to your requests, always so loving and sweet to my son. I highly recommend The Yellow Balloon and I don't plan on taking him anywhere else! I never had a problem here, it is a great atmosphere to bring your little one without traumatizing them! Took my son in for a haircut today, his usual hair stylist was not available so the lady at the front desk suggested that we have CAROL cut my son's hair. I have never seen her working there before, but I decided to give her a try because she is the only stylist who is "not busy". The haircut itself was just OK, nothing special, but her attitude was HORRIBLE. She was confrontational, rude and impatient. The pricing of this place is a little steep, and for $20 a haircut I would expect the stylist to be at least polite (if not friendly). I guess she is "not busy" for a good reason. I still gave her $3 tip just to be polite, but don't think we will be coming back again. I have been taking my son here for 2 years, and I have never had any negative experience until today. I brought my 3-year old for the first time on a Sunday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised that the place wasn't packed like some other kids salons in the area usually are. Even though the salon is on the small side, they have a nice play area in the back with several toys, books, and even a couple of 50-cent rides to entertain your kids while you wait. Having been to other childrens salons I was very disappointed by the service and cut here. The stylist (the owner) was 10 minutes late opening the shop and when she did arrive she didn't even say hi to my 3 yr old before cutting his hair. She acted like we were a hassle because I wanted a movie put in for my son to watch while he sat there(isn't that why you put tvs & dvd players at each station?). She never asked me what kind of cut I wanted and just pulled out a buzzer and started shaving the back of his hair. I stopped her as soon as she started, but it was a little late. She didn't make sure the back was even and it kind of looks like he has a rat tail from the 80s back there now. She never spoke to either of us the entire cut. I told her to give him a skater haircut, she did not know what that was so I explained it to her. She said she understood but apparently not. Very bad experience with Yellow balloon. I used to regularly go there for past 2 years, and got appts within the hour by calling--but this time i used a living social coupon, and when I called, the lady said nothing available for a week ? When I asked if it was bcos of coupon,she said they were just booked. So I made an appt for the following week. Then called in about half hour , and said I did not have acoupon and was told I could get in with in the hour !!! So clearly this business is having different standards for the coupon which they dont say on the coupon-- I showed up for my coupon appt the following week , and after the haircut the manager refused to punch my frequent visit card, saying that for the coupon, the card cannot be punched-- again no fine print on coupon OR on thefrequent visit card saying a visit is negatedif you use a coupon that the business gives to get customers !! The lady ( Cecilia) said that if you come back with one morecoupon then i will punch once to cover both.. which is a lie I think ,since I believe this business just makes up rules as they go along-- I was a loyal customer there until this episode- like she is going to keep track of when i came in with her hand scribbled appt records!! I hope yellow balloon realizes that treating coupon customers as second class citizens is not the way to keep their customer base. They shd realize that times are tough and I wont waste my dollars with or without coupon on a place that is shady in their dealings when so many others want to serve ethically and with respect. So Yellow Ballon-- you just lost how many 18 dollar haircuts for my kid for the next 15 years for a single punch and a coupon?? Do the math if you can. I, too, have been a regular and bought the Living Social voucher because it's a great deal and we go there anyway. Of course, I couldn't get an appointment when I wanted to but they did make one for me a few days later. When I got there, there were two stylists who had finished their prior appointments and were just sitting there talking and reading their mail while we had to wait 20 minutes for our stylist. Apparently those who use vouchers are considered second class citizens and are relegated to the newer or "not as good" stylists. They had signs all over about not having availability for coupon users that day and how they are based on availability, call for appointments, etc. Seriously, if you don't want the business, don't offer a deal through Living Social. My daughter's haircut was just okay but the feeling of being treated like a leaper because we used a voucher has me convinced we will not go back. read more

Very disappointing. We took my son,19 months, and my daughter, 6 years. The salon was extremely dirty, broken toys, and hair everywhere. There was zero interaction between the staff and the children. All the hair tools seemed used, dirty, and out dated. Will absolutely never go back. Way overpriced. The 2 cuts cost $42. The salon lacks youth, enthusiasm, and talent. My husband I recently moved here from California, and we were looking for a place to get my daughters hair cut. Saw this place after looking it up on google. We went there, and my daughter loved it, but we did not. We got Ping, I was explaining to her what i wanted, she kept nodding that she understood me. I had no idea that she was deaf until after she handed me her clipboard with questions on it. my daughter basically got her bangs trimmed, and a little off the bottom, when I wanted her hair evened out since the top half of her hair was longer than underneath. We paid $18 for a trim?? little over priced in my opinion... yes, my daughter got her "yellow balloon" after she got her hair cut. that she liked... needless to say I WILL NOT be going back to The Yellow Balloon, I will find somewhere else to spend my money. read more
