How I love acai bowls. Ever since I was introduced to them, I can't get enough of the blend of fruits, granola and honey. To me the honey is what makes it, you can definitely taste the distinct taste of good honey compared to the cheap kind. But anyways, I heard Tropical Tribe was supposed to have some great Brazilian acai bowls...that led to the purchase of my very first groupon, $8 for $16 worth of items at Tropical Tribe, thats 2 acai bowls for the price of one, can't be beat. Onto the food! The people working there were very friendly and helpful and their cute little picnic tables next to the food truck were very clean and comfortable (FYI, the truck is across the street from Papa John's, Hawaiian Brian's, and 24 Hour Fitness). The 4 of us got 2 Regular Tropical Tribe bowls and split them, we definitely didn't need a bowls worth of sugar in each of us. We got our order reasonably quickly, I just chalk it up to them putting extra love into the food. Generous amount of fruits, granola and honey...pretty much a perfect ratio of everything to everything. Took a spoonful of acai, granola and a strawberry...heavenly. Granola was crunchy, strawberry was a little tart but fresh, and the acai mixed with guarana was different from any other acai I've had before...and I mean that in the best way possible. Needless to say, we all devoured our share of the bowls very quickly. Couldn't tell if it was the sugar or the guarana that gave me energy, but I felt great after eating and I went and did Koko Head haha. Would definitely recommend trying this food truck out if you're in the mood for a great acai bowl with a twist, and also good service and nice area to enjoy said bowl. As always, I love their bowls. They have restructed their menu though: they have various different presentations of their acai bowl. I'm guessing it's because Hawai'i is accustomed to the acai bowl made with soy milk or apple juice to filter out the rest of the berry. I still say get the "tropical tribe bowl." They also have new toppings! Get the tropical topping. It's extra, but SO worth the bee pollen, raw honey, and extra fruit! Yummmmy! My brother and I like to call in our order early so they'll keep it refrigerated and the raw honey will become solid enough for us to mix around. AWWW SNAP! Acai Bowls! These bowls here are touted as the traditional way of blending Acai in Brazil. What they do is take the acai berries and blend it with guarana extract. It's brilliant! I guess its true sometimes traditional is best. On the first bite I was hooked! Many acai bowls out there come out way too sweet but this one is just right. It has that classic acai flavor plus this subtle texture change from the guarana. This place has convinced me that a good acai isn't about the craziest toppings but a good balance between everything. There's that traditional blend with the guarana extract or if you'd like to stick to something more familiar you can get it blended with apple juice or soy milk like how all the other local places make it. I bought a groupon for this place and stopped by when they were located in the same parking lot as Jazz Minds. The wagon is really colorful--you can't miss it! I ordered their tropical tribe acai bowl and guayaki tribe. I happened to place my order just after a large family ordered, so I had to wait a long time for mine to come out. On the bright side, at least they blend each bowl and cut the fruit on the the spot, making their bowls taste really fresh and sweet! Also, it happened to be scorching hot that day, so the acai bowl was so refreshing! I spoke to the owner and he said that his method of blending the bowls is the traditional way that acai is blended. Unlike other places that make acai bowls, he uses 2 acai packets instead of 1. This makes the acai blend less sweet, but also more powdery. The acai blend texture was a little strange for me, which is why this place loses a star in my book. It tasted like the acai powder to ice and fruit ratio was off and parts of the blend tasted like wet powder. Seems like the "Westernized" version of acai bowls has ruined my expectation on the texture and flavor, but I think I'd prefer 1 acai packet to 2, just to keep things more smoothie-like. I did like the strong acai flavor, however. The real winner for me, which sadly is no longer available due to lack of demand, was the guayaki tribe. The guayaki tribe is cold, unsweetened yerba mate. It was really bold and refreshing! I've tried the canned stuff and it isn't as fresh tasting as Tropical Tribe's. It's a great energy-boosting drink and perfect for hot summer weather. If you want legit acai bowls, come here! Where else would you get a Brazilian treat, other than from a Brazilian? I got this on my first day visiting the island, which pretty much ruined me for the rest of the trip.
