Rating as an event venue: This was not on my radar; I came…read morebecause Asheville's preeminent riverfront music venue, Salvage Station, was destroyed by the hurricane (with some plans to relocate very slowly in motion), and seeing the same (New Orleans-based) act years later seemed like an opportunity for healing. I was unfamiliar with the brand as a non-drinker, but apparently it's California-based and this is an expansion for them. Event parking was offsite in a field, with a somewhat awkward shuttle bus or a short trail through the woods that me (and a few other guests) couldn't quite figure out. The venue itself is magnificent; an amphitheater that highlights the woods in the background. Despite the fact that it's next to the airport, I never heard a plane. The site is also marked by a large restaurant, an outdoor garden which they say supplies greens to the restaurant, and some quality facilities. While I feel reasonable in having gotten food earlier, I did take the opportunity to try a hop water, which delivered amply on flavor. It's not in Asheville proper, but it really feels like being in North Carolina woods, and the whole site is probably nice for a daytime tour as well.

Puppy-Approved Pit Stop…read more A quick trip to the Asheville area to grab some equipment turned into a brunch stop on the way home! With our pup in tow, we needed somewhere dog-friendly with outdoor seating -- and this place delivered. It was raining when we pulled up, but the patio was well-covered with plenty of seating. Staff even moved our table to keep us clear of the weather and made sure our seats were fully dried off before we sat down -- small touch, big impression. Our hostess greeted us with menus -- including a menu for the pup! Absolutely adorable, and such a nice touch that they cater to the four-legged family members too. Our waitress was just as sweet, friendly and on top of everything throughout the meal. We kicked things off with a "Make It Spicy" Mary and an IPA. Fried green tomatoes are a must-order for me wherever I go, and this version -- panko-crusted, served over creamy stone-ground goat cheese grits with red pepper coulis and fresh basil -- lived up to every word of that description. Crispy, creamy, with a nice pop of flavor: proper Southern cooking. For mains, I went with the sweet & spicy fried chicken & waffles -- hand-breaded crispy tenders drizzled with sriracha honey over golden buttermilk waffles -- and it did not disappoint. Sweet, savory, perfectly crisp, with waffles that were light and fluffy with a gorgeous golden crust. I cleared my plate. My partner, on the other hand, wasn't a fan of his bourbon peppercorn glazed meatloaf (a scratch-made beef and chorizo blend) -- so much so that he left most of it and said flatly, "It's gross, I'd never order that again." The mashed potatoes, at least, were a hit. A little bittersweet for me, since I loved everything on my plate and wished he'd had the same experience. So we'd come back, he'd just order something else next time!
