Something about the Picnic Cafe name made me think the food would be a little more homemade, cute in presentation, etc. but that wasn't quite the case. Our food was served on styrofoam, the coffee drinks were a-okay (from a machine) and the jelly was served in packets (I'm not sure why but I really pictured sweet local jams or something that would tie back to the name and feel of the business). The bakery case offered croissants, cookies, etc. I didn't try any of those for myself so I can't speak to them. They offer a handful of small tables both inside and on the front patio overlooking the square.  The service was great - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that here.

I tried smoked turkey with lettuce, tomato, bacon and mayo on sourdough instead of the multigrain. It fell into the fairly basic camp but it was basically delicious! Toasty bread, plenty of shaved turkey, right amount of bacon and fresh veg. My sis had the special of the day which was their version of a classic Italian hoagie. It was served on a sub roll and she liked it a lot. It was quick to order and pay, we parked ourselves under an umbrella on the deck and in about 7 minutes had our two delicious sandwiches brought out in a bag. How delicious? I went back the next day (Saturday) only to discover the hours had changed and they were closed. And yes, I did my Yelply duty and updated the business hours on the app :)

When we pulled in, it was a little confusing as Chestatee River Adventures is in the same building. The main door is on the front or if you have a dog, head to the outdoor balcony area to claim your table. You need to have someone in your party head inside to place your order. The menu is relatively simple but specials (and ice cream!!) are inside. All of the ladies working were super pleasant, friendly and helpful. Once seated, they would offer to refill drinks and clear dishes. I got the daily special, Chestatee Chicken which was grilled chicken, thick bacon, grilled onions, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. You can get it standalone or on a bun. I opted for no bread. The loaded naked potato salad was tasty but too mayo-heavy for my husband's liking. The fries were delicious, the view was great, service excellent, food good- try it!

While it was delicious I have to say I've had better especially since I've lived in the Middle East and love the food over there but this is a nice Mediterranean/Mis-East dining option for North Georgia to have as a healthier option than many places. The mixed grill I ordered came with beef steak - shish tarwoek, grilled chicken and kofta that is made with lamb burger and grilled. The saffron rice was excellent and the Greek side salad very good. I'll be going back there when I'm back in the area that won't be long since I visit north Georgia often. Service was fine and nice little restaurant.

If you wanted to buy those ingredients yourself and a make a burger, you would make it for much cheaper. My main qualms was just how stale and poor quality it all was. But the patty was the worse. So, so, so bad. It had no salt, no seasoning, tasted like cow and freezer burn and felt like rubber. I can't stress enough how bad it was, but I had to get myself a second lunch.

The house salad was made up of greens that were not clean, the lettuce was old where they were it was cut as you can see in the pictures and the dressing which was homemade vinaigrette was completely 100% oil. The baked Italian sub was not baked at all, the cheese was not even melted on the sandwich. The garlic breadsticks which we were told were phenomenal were frozen or store-bought breadsticks that were heated up in the oven. You would think in a pizzeria restaurant that they would make their own breadsticks. Every pizzeria in the free world makes their own breadsticks fresh. The cheese and pepperoni pizza which they say is a crowd favorite came to the table and was nothing but a pool of grease. I am not being critical, I'm being real. The waitress (Hailey) was very nice, but it seemed like a whole lot of people standing around to me to not get things right. For 2 people spending $45 for lunch I would expect a little more attention to what the menu says and what you serve. If you say, baked on the menu, then bake the sub long enough to melt cheese.
