My husband is a regular customer of this store for YEARS. We have nothing but positive things to say about the store and the management. Never once have we gotten a sick pet from here and the quality of care is always supreme. Dean was nice enough to temporarily take care of our tortoises because we recently had a baby and are looking for a new home. Our tortoise has been sick for sometimes and Dean was still gracious enough to take him and care for him while we transition. So before making assumptions maybe find out what the story is. I went in for decorative wood, but walked out because of the way some of the animals were kept. A tortoise was in a sad empty box with no shelter and exhibiting stress behaviors. Its shell was also pyramiding, which is a sure sign of malnutrition. They had betta fish in tiny cups (which is an unfortunately common but inhumane way of displaying them) and were advertising minuscule tanks for them. The current standard of care is much higher and bettas need 5 gallon minimum tanks. No living creature should live in a 1 gal water dispenser, which was advertised at a discount in the very front. It was obvious that this shop only cared about profit and not animal welfare and I could not stomach giving this place my money. read more

Called this store and Juan was fantastic in regard to helping me put together a turtle electric gravel cleaner that I bought on Amazon. Cost $20, worth every penny!!!! When I arrived to T.I., Joseph assisted me in one-stop shopping for my turtles, from answering my questions and explaining what I need for them, to helping me with what's practical for the red ear sliders, and even offering to help me carry everything to my vehicle. Juan helped with check out with impeccable customer service, and my experience at Tropical Imports was easy breezy and I really overall appreciated them. Highly recommend this store, from fish to reptiles, turtles and all your supplies needed for an amazing-looking aquarium. C'mon, they are aquarium specialists!!!!!! This is a local store for me and I have always felt welcome. People should expect a more chill atmosphere. Juan is absolutely the best employee, he always takes time to explain what's best for the fish/shrimp I'm researching. Thanks to him I have two small tanks that are thriving. The best part is he is a knowledgeable employee and fish keepers will appreciate he will gently remind or tell you if your tank might not be the appropriate size for what you have in mind. Some employees especially at the big box stores might give you the wrong information (not always on purpose) but Juan double checks info online to make sure. Legit. I've seen him interact with lots of customers and he's always polite and professional. He is really sweet to elderly clients, it's so nice to see that. Lots of fish stores sell fish and don't sweat what conditions they may encounter in their new home, but Juan actually cares and is great. He does his best to make sure people don't wait too long if he's the only one in the store. I super appreciate his help. read more

I bought a comet goldfish after the one I bought at Petco had ich. No ich on this fish!

I visited because a fish friend recommended it. I got some front row parking on the street. The staff was so kind and answered questions for me. Good to know I can get frozen rodents if needed. I was excited to see there were reptiles and additional Bettas. I ended up buying some feeder guppies and wonder shells. A good amount of live bearers available, like guppies, mollies, and platys. read more

Bought some elodeas to put in my tank. The person at the front was very sarcastic and was rushing me to leave the store. I usually buy my plants online but wanted to try my LFS. He ended up picking a few out from the tank. When I checked, I saw that the elodeas were brown and withering away. I cut the dying parts and put what I can in my tank. A few days later, I found an aphids infestation in my tank so I had to get rid of a lot of my floating plants. The only new thing I added were the elodeas that were purchased from here. I love this store and the staff-especially Dean! They have a variety of fish and a small (but awesome) selection of beardies, snakes, turtles, spiders, etc. They also have a pretty good selection of tanks, terrariums and decor. I use to live down the street and would go all the time for everything for my fish and bearded dragon. If he doesn't have it, he will get it. You can always call him ahead and ask if it is in stock. I'm only leaving this review based on what I have used this store for and that is their RO freshwater. I can't speak to the other aspects of the store. I don't think their RO freshwater is in fact RO water. I noticed after a water change that my TDS and GH in my freshwater tank were much higher than I expected them to be so I decided to test the TDS and GH of the RO water I had just bought here and used for that water change. My GH came back above 7 and the TDS was north of 120. RO water should have a GH of 0 and TDS below 10. It's important to mention, everything in my tank is totally fine, so they're definitely not just selling tap water, it must have been conditioned or treated in some way. But tanks are delicate things, and when you are maintaining a tank based off the belief that you're using RO water when in fact you aren't, serious problems can arise based off that false belief. In general I was pretty disappointed because what I was sold wasn't what I was told it was. read more

I have been shopping at this fish store for about 16 years and I'm saddened to say it has gone downhill ever since I started shopping here. The fish seem relatively healthy and they have, I'd say, an average selection of fish with average pricing. But the store is extremely outdated and the staff are quite uninformed. Had a great experience at Tropical Imports. I was looking for an 80 gallon aquarium and a completely new setup for my fish who had outgrown their 30 gallon tank. The owner completely hooked me up with a Beautiful 80 gallon aquarium and stand with a gorgeous stained wood finish. I have purchased most of my fish from Dean and the only problem is that we have mollys and guppies that won't stop breading. I guess there could be worse issues. Wanted to say it's very overpriced! Didn't realize it until I went to petco. I bought a tank here for $125 at petco same tank with everything would've cost me $80 max. Bought a pineapple ornament for the tank for $30, petco had it for $10, also bought a beta fish that was almost $4, petco had it for $2.25 and had more variety of Betta fish than them. The glo fish were also 5 for $36 at petco, while here it was 2 for $20 all the way up. So point and case, there overpriced! Go to Petco, you won't regret it ! read more

Today will be the last time I step foot in this shop. I am a firm believer in supporting small local businesses but unfortunately today I learned a valuable lesson at this establishment. After being a loyal customer for 5 years, I walked in to buy a basking lamp for one my reptiles. The customer ahead of me was making a larger purchase and after standing in line for 10 minutes with 1 item, the man ahead of me walked away from the counter to the back of the store, at which time I asked the owner behind the counter if it was okay if he charged me for my one item since the man had walked away. He said it was fine and proceeded to charge me. During this transaction, the customer that was ahead of me walked back to the counter. I thanked the worker for allowing me to pay, and the worker stated, "don't thank me, thank this guy" and pointed to the customer. I turned and expressed my gratitude to the customer, which at this point looking back, I should not have done, as he started berating me and telling me that I should've asked his permission first before talking to the owner. I did not respond as I did not want to start an argument with somebody who was unreasonable. I was in the process of paying when the customer that was ahead of me stated that he wants to cancel his order because it's ridiculous that the owner took me before him. At that moment, when that other guy walked out of the store, the owner turned to me with anger and said that this was my fault, even though i asked permission and was being respectful to everyone involved. I will never be stepping foot in this establishment again due to the disrespect I faced at the hands of the owner. read more

I really like the fact that this store actually goes through all of these reviews and takes all comments, good and bad seriously. My first time in this store didn't go well but Dean definitely made sure my second time here was great. I am a seahorse guy and Tropical Imports is the only store in the area I see carry true Captive Bred Reidi Seahorses. I was able to find a really beautiful pair here. With big internet names like Live Aquaria that give guarantees and such, I think its more important than ever for local fish stores to remember that the best kind of business is the repeat customer and good word of mouth. I was extremely happy to over hear great knowledge that was being shared with customers in the store, be it about filters, a type of fish, corals, etc. A bit of a drive from where I live but, its good to know that this store cares not only about its customers, but also the fish they keep.
