Southfork Ranch - Llama on the Ranch

Southfork Ranch

This place is a legitimate piece of American pop culture history, and they do a great job bringing it to life. The guided tour takes you inside the actual ranch house, and it's more immersive than you'd think. The formal dining room with its crystal chandeliers, the bold red kitchen, the grand foyer staircase -- it's all right there, frozen in time like the Ewing family just stepped out for a moment. And yes, they have the room where JR was shot, complete with a chalk outline and crime scene markers. Campy? A little. Fun? Absolutely. Outside, the grounds are beautiful. White fences, open pastures, friendly animals wandering around with the iconic ranch house as the backdrop. There's also JR's silver Lincoln Continental on display in the museum, along with memorabilia and history from the show. Fair warning: this is a deeply generational experience. My older colleagues were absolutely in their element while some of the younger folks in our group needed a little context. But even without being a die-hard Dallas fan, there's enough to see and appreciate that everyone ended up having a good time. Great group outing, unique Dallas experience. If you're in the area, it's absolutely worth a visit.

Growing up in Europe, we watched the show later than audiences in the U.S., but I never missed an episode and absolutely loved following the Ewings' story. So when I had the chance to travel through Texas, visiting Southfork was at the top of my list. The visit exceeded my expectations. The ranch is perfectly set up for visitors - from the guided tour of the house, which is preserved and decorated exactly like it appeared in the show, to all the little details, including the cars the Ewing family used. Our guide gave a fascinating talk about the history of filming, the ranch's rental process, and behind-the-scenes stories that really brought the show to life. We also got to walk around the ranch, see the small horses or ponies, and browse a tiny gift shop. It was amazing to experience in person something I'd watched on TV for so many years - and on the other side of the continent, no less! The whole experience was nostalgic, charming, and genuinely fun. If you love Dallas or just want to see an iconic TV ranch in real life, Southfork is absolutely worth the visit.

The atmosphere is exactly what you hope for in a hidden gem: an intimate, six-table setting with thoughtful, beautiful décor that makes the entire experience feel intentional from start to finish. We chose the Dinner for Two, and it was the perfect way to experience the menu. My husband and I started with a generously portioned lump crab cake, followed by a perfectly charred Caesar salad. Then came the main event, a 24oz Delmonico steak served alongside charred asparagus, broccolini, potatoes, and a squash and zucchini medley. Every single element was exceptional. Truly. Lane has created something special here. Elevated, fine-dining quality food in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can unwind, enjoy incredible flavors, and savor meaningful time with great company. If you haven't been yet, consider this your sign. You will want to experience it for yourself.

BAR-Ranch Steak Company has been one of my favorite meals of the year!…read more Downtown Plano is a quick drive away from my office at our companies HQ, and one day a group of four of us picked it out for a little lunch celebration we were having. It was my first trip to downtown Plano which is a nice quaint strip of bars, restaurants, and shops that reminded me of any of the small one/two stop light towns around my home of NC, even though you're really surrounded by metro Dallas highways and city. The atmosphere, the food, the service, was perfection. I'll do my best to describe, but if I was creating a restaurant, I'd tell you to go here, and that is what I want. The restaurant itself is very nice, certainly upscale enough for a super nice date night, but also casual enough at lunch time for a business casual outfit. The area itself is relatively small and intimate, I'm going to guess 10 or less tables, and a spot for a few people at a small bar. Right beside the bar is the grill where you can see, hear, and smell the food being cooked! The owner was our waiter, and just like the rest, service was plenty formal yet also laid back. He did everything how you'd expect in a fine dining restaurant, but also was comfortable in a baseball cap and laid back fine with having a conversation. He was happy to tell us about the restaurant itself, the interior which he built out himself, and was enthusiastic about what he was serving and told us everything about the meat and sides. It was great seeing someone so proud and excited to tell his costumers about every aspect of it. He alone would make me want to be a regular visitor. But then there is the food! Perfection! All four of us ordered the Wagyu NY Strip, so he just told us he would serve it on a board with plenty of sides to fill us up. We didn't even have to tell him how we wanted the steak cooked, he said everything was cooked to 135 and it came out absolutely perfectly! Quality tasty meat, true wood flavor, it was what I normally have to cook myself at home to get! The sides were great as well, charred broccoli (which I'm a sucker for, marbles potatoes, fries, all wonderful! The menu is not huge, but I think that's perfect. Do what you do well and you don't need a multi page menu full of random dishes. BAR-Ranch knows what they are and they excel at it! It's not cheap, but personally I'd rather have one meal of exceptional quality over multiple cheaper meals that leave me feeling "meh that was fine". Personally I'll be back and can't wait for another opportunity to try it!

We had our Daughters Baby Shower here a few weeks ago. First G-Baby coming soon!…read more We had @ 19 friends and family from around the country come in for the party. Everyone commented on how Heritage Ranch is so beautiful and inviting, from the moment you arrive at the entrance, to the drive to the clubhouse. And the staff! Just outstanding. The appetizers (fruit and veggies) and lunch burger bar were made to perfection. Open bar was an added delight, but even those who sipped on lemonade or tea were impressed. From the initial meeting with Patty, to the two gentlemen on the day of party (Octavio and Mitchell?), everything was perfect. They were such a great help and our friends mentioned how nice everyone was even walking through the halls. You can't go wrong with booking a party here at Heritage Ranch.

Unfortunately, our experience was made even more memorable by the course marshal, Dan, who passionately reminded us (multiple times) that joy and relaxation are not permitted here. He found it appropriate to yell in my 25 yo daughter's face, "everyone else here is trying to enjoy their day too!!!!" He's an older gentleman, and based on his behavior, we're genuinely concerned for his mental health and well-being. We're considering starting a GoFundMe for his much needed therapy sessions and organizing a weekly prayer circle to manifest some inner peace for him in 2026. In the meantime, if you're visiting, just know you may be treated like you're in military basic training, but hey, at least your short game will be tight under pressure. :) #scrooge (If I get enough reactions to this review, I'll post the audio /video of him yelling!)
