Like many people in 2020, finding a place to work out safely has been very difficult. I had no idea…read morewhat to do as an extrovert who loves Group Fitness classes, because it helps me get a little bit more energy. That's where my summer Y membership came into place. I ended up utilizing the outdoor spin classes at this location frequently, and cannot say enough good things about Chuck, the fitness instructor. As far as I know, there are a few other outdoor classes, but the spin classes are my jam. I love Chuck's energy, the music, and the fact that I get a super hard ride in once a week. I believe he teaches three classes per week, but the Sunday class is my favorite. So grateful that the YMCA has provided us with a safe way to get our fitness on. Thank you!

By far my favorite YMCA in Durham. While the American Tobacco Campus lacks a swimming pool, steam…read moreroom and sauna, it makes up for it in the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, cleanliness of the lockers and equipment and it's the least crowded Y I've been to in the area. I most often visit the gym between 9:30-12:00pm, and there is never more then a handful of clients during those hours at this Y. Mostly professionals that work at Tobacco Campus, people are quiet and stick to themselves. Also, note that this location is also only open on weekdays, conducive to professionals! I've never had a Y attendant be more attentive to me, one of the staff asked me if I was doing okay during my workout routine and offered helpful suggestions. Their quality of equipment is on par with the Lakewood facilities but is more updated with the NikeFit application on the treadmills and built in fans (you also have a beautiful waterfall view!). They also have a private bike room (not a glass room like the downtown Y) and a couple private workout classrooms for classes. My only qualms about this Y are that parking can be rough to find and there's a two hour limit on the street and in the deck. In addition, the water pressure in the woman's bathroom is like a deep-tissue massage. It's not bad, but startled me at first and I could see people having an issue with that. Since this location is only open during weekdays and not late, it's definitely more geared towards the local work crowd. Last, the lockers in the woman's room are much smaller then your typical YMCA lockers, so bring a small gym back or just try to shove it all in. I switch off my YMCA's since I work, live and socialize near three different locations, but I was very happy to discover this mostly hidden branch. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere and a place where there will always be open equipment. Also, they've got coffee for you on your way out, how much better can it get?! Elite Note: If you feel like running outdoors, the ATT starts on the other side of the highway and goes for 22 miles!

"Tennis club/ pool/ fitness room & classes for faculty, staff, and alumni of Duke"…read more We've been coming here for 5 years now, and definitely like it overall. Best known for its multiple tennis courts, this facility also houses a large pool, a toddler pool, a lap pool, a fitness room, and basketball courts. They also regularly host activities such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Memorial Day fun events, various summer cookouts, "parents' night out" events (where they'll keep your kids occupied while you go elsewhere), etc. My personal usage has been highest for the fitness room, which has treadmills, stairmasters, bikes, and assorted weight machines and free weights. It's not a big facility, but it's convenient (on campus at Duke), rarely crowded, and with low turnover among other users (you see the same people whenever you go). It also now opens at 6am, which makes it convenient to work-out before going to work. They host various fitness/ yoga/ nia classes (I think for a fee), and you can also reserve time with fitness trainer for a fee. For those who prefer to exercise outdoors, the Faculty Club abuts the Al Buehler running trail through the Duke Forest- a beautiful (but hilly!) 2.9 or 3.6 mile loop. You can run the trail then shower and/ or do weights at the Club. The big pool opens for general use in the summer, and sometimes has limited hours, but is still a big hit especially for people who don't have a neighborhood pool and want a clean and safe facility. It's often overrun by kids on hot days or holidays, but in a good way. It has a high-dive board, a regular dive board, and a twisty-slide into the pool. There are also shaded areas for parents to wait for their kids, thank goodness! There's been a lot of recent turnover in the director position, and some have been more responsive than others, but the current director is great- very involved and responsive. A year's family membership is currently $790, and comes with full access to all facilities (though some planned activities cost money). Members can bring guests to the facility for a small fee.

This is a delightful spot to swim in the summer. There are a couple lap pools, diving boards and tons of space for kids to splash around. If you're lucky enough to be able to join, you'll love the lush surroundings and access to AC'd locker rooms. Plus, there are snacks and grills available for use.

"Decent gym in strip mall on Hillsborough Rd, Durham"…read more My regular gym has been closed for renovations, so I've been coming here for a few weeks now. A one-month guest membership was only $60, and it was super-fast to sign up. As the other reviewer said, it's not a "high-end" fitness center, but it's certainly acceptable. They had some group exercise classes, but I didn't really look into those. Median age of people I've seen there (~6:30-7:30am) I'd guess is ~35-40 years old. Positives: + Active but not crowded. Never empty, but never hard to get a piece of equipment at the times I come. + Extensive equipment I used was mostly reasonably new and/ or well-maintained. LOTS of treadmills, tons of both machine and free weights, areas for aerobics/ stretching, etc. + Curtained individual showers, even for the men, with soap provided. + Clientele and staff are friendly but not chatty-- perfect combination. Potential negatives: - It's a bit dark inside-- not so much from lack of lights but from the paint. Not in a bad way, but just not really bright like at other gyms. Perhaps some people prefer that... - They play the music too loud. I don't mind their choices, and it's not painful or anything, but I'd rather listen to my own music on my iPod than their selection, and it's played loud enough to make it hard to ignore their music. Things not provided: - Must bring your own lock for lockers - Must bring your own towels. Synopsis: Perfectly happy with this place as a fill-in for my regular gym. If they had a pool, I'd even consider it as a possible replacement. A-OK.

I decided to try barre because I am not a fan of high impact workouts. Don't be fooled by the minimal movements - these classes are no joke. I've checked out other barre places around the Triangle, and this one was right by my house! The class is exactly what you'd expect from a Pure Barre class (scripted, a routine you would know). You enter the studio, sign in, and set up inside the room. Barre socks are a must, so bring some with you. There are bathrooms both outside and inside of the actual room, and only one wall has a mirror - so you aren't forced in front of one if you don't want it. Both classes I took started late, which is annoying, but it was the first week they were open. I definitely think it takes more than once class to feel the workout - you'll spend the whole first class just understanding what's going on, so if you have the opportunity, a class package is the way to go. I purchased the 4 classes for $40 newcomers special (14 days to use). Unfortunately some of the days the studio was closed due to snow, but the owners were more than accommodating about adding a few days back onto the pass to cover it. However, it was nearly impossible to get into a class! Even a full week ahead of time, I could not get into a class or on a wait-list - AT ALL (I'm talking the entire weekend was full). So despite the owner's accommodation with adding a few days on to the package, I was only able to use two classes anyway. My suggestion: If you have time to take class during the off-peak hours (mid-day? I have no idea) then it's worth it, but otherwise, any kind of package that can expire might not be worth your money. This might be due to the fact that they just opened a few weeks ago, so hopefully as they hammer out a better schedule, include more classes, etc. this won't be an issue.

Maitland's Method might not be on your radar for personal fitness because it's not one of those big conglomerate gyms, but you should definitely consider it. Just to give you a summary: - This gym is primarily for personal training but you get access to some of the equipment as a regular client - They offer individual and partner training sessions (partner sessions are half the price which makes it very affordable) - Emphasis on strength and resistance training - Lots of very solid equipment and free weights Maitland and his team have a long history of strength training -- check out the wall of bodybuilding trophies and photos when you walk through the entrance. Among their trainers are bodybuilding champions and an ex-NFL linesman. You don't need to be an aspiring bodybuilder to appreciate the workout routine. There's a diverse mix of clients -- men, women, young, and old. Each trainer follows Maitland's method (hence the name) which has been refined over many years. Still learning about the method but so far so good! The trainers help you throughout the routine, keep a log of your exercises, and help you build fitness plans (for inside and outside the gym). For someone like me that forgets to count reps, this place is a godsend. My workout has become much more focused and efficient. I use to be able to waste hours at the gym when I was younger but now I recognize the importance of getting the most out of the time as possible. The extra cost for personal training has been well worth it! Trey has been especially friendly and effective. At nearly 7' tall and built like a football player (no surprise he use to play for the Colts) he might seem a little intimidating but he's actually probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. The exercises have been safe and I've been able to blend my new routine with soccer and running. He's helping prepare me for a marathon and build muscle at the same time (which will hopefully help prevent injury).
