"Fitness center just off Duke's west campus"…read more My regular gym has been closed for renovations, so I came here for a few weeks. A one-month guest membership was $70 for Duke employees, but it took quite a good 30 minutes just to sign up (needed to verify things, take my picture for ID, etc.). It's not a "high-end" fitness center with lattes, but it's certainly acceptable. They had some group exercise classes, but I didn't really look into those. Median age of people I saw there (~6:30-7:30am) was ~60 years old or so. It did seem like one emphasis here was for rehabilitation, too: one of the first things I saw after entering was a big set of rolling walkers. The layout is a bit odd-- large track circling various pieces of equipment, with free weights in one corner and bikes (for spinning classes) in another. I was never clear what the very center was for-- perhaps some sort of sport that wasn't being played in the early morning hours I went. Much of the equipment seems old. There was a lap pool in a room off to the side, but I never tried it. Positives: + Friendly staff + You get a locker key each time you check in (while they hold your car key) + Towel service + Sauna Potential negatives: - No TVs or other good distractions - Awkwardly large layout - Uncurtained group men's shower Synopsis: I was fine with this facility for a few weeks, but I definitely felt out of place as likely the youngest or second-youngest person exercising there in the early hours (and I'm in my 40s).

I decided to try barre because I am not a fan of high impact workouts. Don't be fooled by the minimal movements - these classes are no joke. But, the instructor was so friendly and encouraging the whole time and I didn't feel embarrassed or out of place. The studio is clean and everyone is very energetic and welcoming! It really is a fun and positive environment.

I've checked out other barre places around the Triangle, and this one was right by my house! The class is exactly what you'd expect from a Pure Barre class (scripted, a routine you would know). You enter the studio, sign in, and set up inside the room. Barre socks are a must, so bring some with you. There are bathrooms both outside and inside of the actual room, and only one wall has a mirror - so you aren't forced in front of one if you don't want it. Both classes I took started late, which is annoying, but it was the first week they were open. I definitely think it takes more than once class to feel the workout - you'll spend the whole first class just understanding what's going on, so if you have the opportunity, a class package is the way to go. I purchased the 4 classes for $40 newcomers special (14 days to use). Unfortunately some of the days the studio was closed due to snow, but the owners were more than accommodating about adding a few days back onto the pass to cover it. However, it was nearly impossible to get into a class! Even a full week ahead of time, I could not get into a class or on a wait-list - AT ALL (I'm talking the entire weekend was full). So despite the owner's accommodation with adding a few days on to the package, I was only able to use two classes anyway. My suggestion: If you have time to take class during the off-peak hours (mid-day? I have no idea) then it's worth it, but otherwise, any kind of package that can expire might not be worth your money. This might be due to the fact that they just opened a few weeks ago, so hopefully as they hammer out a better schedule, include more classes, etc. this won't be an issue.

Like many people in 2020, finding a place to work out safely has been very difficult. I had no idea…read morewhat to do as an extrovert who loves Group Fitness classes, because it helps me get a little bit more energy. That's where my summer Y membership came into place. I ended up utilizing the outdoor spin classes at this location frequently, and cannot say enough good things about Chuck, the fitness instructor. As far as I know, there are a few other outdoor classes, but the spin classes are my jam. I love Chuck's energy, the music, and the fact that I get a super hard ride in once a week. I believe he teaches three classes per week, but the Sunday class is my favorite. So grateful that the YMCA has provided us with a safe way to get our fitness on. Thank you!

By far my favorite YMCA in Durham. While the American Tobacco Campus lacks a swimming pool, steam…read moreroom and sauna, it makes up for it in the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff, cleanliness of the lockers and equipment and it's the least crowded Y I've been to in the area. I most often visit the gym between 9:30-12:00pm, and there is never more then a handful of clients during those hours at this Y. Mostly professionals that work at Tobacco Campus, people are quiet and stick to themselves. Also, note that this location is also only open on weekdays, conducive to professionals! I've never had a Y attendant be more attentive to me, one of the staff asked me if I was doing okay during my workout routine and offered helpful suggestions. Their quality of equipment is on par with the Lakewood facilities but is more updated with the NikeFit application on the treadmills and built in fans (you also have a beautiful waterfall view!). They also have a private bike room (not a glass room like the downtown Y) and a couple private workout classrooms for classes. My only qualms about this Y are that parking can be rough to find and there's a two hour limit on the street and in the deck. In addition, the water pressure in the woman's bathroom is like a deep-tissue massage. It's not bad, but startled me at first and I could see people having an issue with that. Since this location is only open during weekdays and not late, it's definitely more geared towards the local work crowd. Last, the lockers in the woman's room are much smaller then your typical YMCA lockers, so bring a small gym back or just try to shove it all in. I switch off my YMCA's since I work, live and socialize near three different locations, but I was very happy to discover this mostly hidden branch. Be sure to check it out if you're looking for a quiet atmosphere and a place where there will always be open equipment. Also, they've got coffee for you on your way out, how much better can it get?! Elite Note: If you feel like running outdoors, the ATT starts on the other side of the highway and goes for 22 miles!

The staff here really and truly cares. As you get checked in, you'll probably will be greeted by Maggie. You'll know her, by he model-esqe eyebrows, and her, "I can solve your issue, look!" She is very sweet and really can fix just about anything with your membership, or questions. The have personal trainers available that are pretty reasonable ... $45 for half-hour. Thats' cheap. I have Mckinze. She's great. I'm 'silver' and there to gain strength and lose weight. I"ve already dropped 8 lbs, not even trying. They serve the most delicious protein shakes I've ever had. They are 20 oz and have a full array of good stuff. I treat myself once a week. They serve about 10 different flavors. ** place is spotless. And it's traffic flow works; I am sure the owners gave a lot of thought to this. What I really like at Fitness World is the amazing diversity of classes they offer ... for FREE! (most of them). There is something for everyone. I like the strength and balance classes. Another feature, which sold me, is there is a dry sauna in the men's shower area. I LOVE THIS !! Feels so good to sweat out all those toxins. I can't say enough good things about this gym. Durham is fortunate to have it. And, the owners are there everyday, so they are involved unlike P.F. I met the wife of the owner, Robin. She is vivacious, sparking personality and will help you with questions, but if there's a real problem - - go see Maggie ...lol. The only down side, is that parking can be an issue during peak times. But hey, you're there to exercise, walk an extra parking space. Try it - you'll like it !

This gym used to be way better maintained under the previous owner. When Fitness World took over…read morethe operation they at first made noteworthy investments in the equipment and I was impressed. Since then, they have continued to allow equipment facilities to deteriorate. And my rating is only about the equipment upkeep and maintenance and NOT about the quality staff that they continue to have working there. I've uploaded several images (none are dupes) that I took today to illustrate my point. the broken or missing machines have been in the state for several months so it's not like it just pooped up this week. I enjoy going to the gym but no one I speak to seems to know when anything will be fixed. They are just told "we're working on it"
