Having recently moved to the Triangle I was looking for ways to get out and meet people. Before moving to Raleigh I had seen an article in Our State Magazine about the curling club in Durham and thought that would be a perfect way to get out and meet people. I looked up their website and saw that they do a Pizza and Curling event every other Saturday. Said no experience needed. PERFECT. Unfortunately they were all booked for January. I REALLY wanted to go in January because my husband was going out of town at the end of the month for work and the team building activity was... you guessed it, curling. I wanted him to get the chance to try it out before he had to do it with his coworkers. I emailed the contact for the Pizza and Curling and asked if they had any cancellations if we could be put on the wait list. Sue (who coordinates all of the pizza events (I think?)) emailed me back in no time and let me know that she would! A couple of days before the event she let me know that they had had a cancellation the hour before and would I be able to come to that time slot instead. Of course I jumped on it and signed us both up! We headed over in the early afternoon (because we were at an earlier slot, it was curling first pizza second, but if you go to the normal event later, it's pizza first then curling, FYI). It was just us and another couple there. There was also a league going on (I think) and a birthday party. We ended up playing a match against the birthday party after we all learned the basics. Pro tip (I'm not a pro, I stink at it actually) wear yoga pants or athletic pants in general. I did, but my husband did not and I think that hindered him. It also cause him to rip his pants (haha, I still think it's funny), so don't let that happen to you. Even if you don't think you can do it (I fell so many times trying) no one makes you think you suck and everyone is super supportive. It is in fact harder than it looks and I kinda bruised my knee in the process of learning, so for the last couple of times I used a stick to push the stone out since my knee was very unhappy with me. I'm just an uncoordinated mess, so if you are at all athletic I think you'll be more than fine. I would agree that it's a very approachable sport and people in wheelchairs can do it too! It's for all ages, children up to people in their 70s and 80s! I enjoyed my time so much that I'm totally sure we'll be back! And now my husband is more prepared for his work outing! The learn to curl class was so much fun! Our instructors Murray and Isaac were awesome. I started off a tad hesitant that I was not going to do well but with their guidance I did better than expected. We started off with the basics followed by a friendly game. Afterwards we grabbed a beer and listened to the other leagues and sessions that Triangle Curling has to offer. I can't wait to try a pick-up and pizza session next! read more

The lowdown: This was a fun, different experience and I'm glad I did it! I was frightened at first since I'm not in the best physical shape and I have a bad back, but it wasn't too bad. They even have accommodations for those that need. I have never been curling and didn't even know what it was until my boss took his staff for a job well done. Although the location is a little out there, the building itself is nice on the inside. They offer a variety of beer, wine and some other drinks. I was impressed with the fact that all the staff is volunteer and do what they do for the love of the sport. You can tell the passion that they have when they are teaching. We had two hours of ice time. The first hour was spent teaching and practicing the game, the last hour we actually got some play time. The time went by quickly. It was fun, different and worth the drive out there! you can place your items like cell phones and drinks in the ledge in front of your ice spot, and there is an area for people to sit and watch through a window from outside the ice area. Tip: Wear or bring gloves. I stayed fairly warm once we started playing in sweats and a pull-over but while being taught and watching my hands and nose got really cold. read more

Curling is just a great time. If you're reading this and think "wtf is curling?", You should try it! It's an under appreciated sport in my opinion and deserves more people experiencing it in groups. Easily fly through 2 hours of a fun game of tossing 44lb stones down the ice, and enjoy a drink on the side. I visited this club for a work activity and it was a great team event for all. Absolutely great space!!! The ice is only used for curling and the seating space is very recently renovated with a spacious kitchen and lots of tables and chairs. We did an intro to curling class which is completely run by volunteers. It was a ton of fun! I'm so excited to have something like this 10 minutes down the road. Go check it out! read more

I went with a few friends last week to the "Try Curling" intro class and loved it! After all the excitement from the Men's US curling win, I'm glad I tried the sport, and definitely want to go back for more practice. We arrived right at the start of the class, where we were all given shoe covers and divided into 4-person groups to learn how to push the stone, sweep, and move around the ice. We took turns trying each, then challenged the group across from us for a quick practice. Our instructor explained the rules, techniques, and made it a really great event. Key takeaways: curling was harder than it looked. To get yourself into the sliding position it takes a lot of balance, a lot of squatting, and some strength to push the 40lb stone across the ice. Sweeping is a little easier, but still involves a lot of movement (you will not be cold by the end). After, we had a short debrief and then there was the option to have a drink at the bar and relax with friends. Triangle Curling is all volunteer-based, and they do an excellent job explaining the sport and getting everyone involved. I'm really glad I took the chance to try this. read more

My neighbor and I attended the beginner's curling class on a Monday night and it was a blast. Neither of us had ever tried curling before, and we really had fun. The facility is nice (and I think they have plans to make it even nicer), the staff and instructors were all clearly involved because they love the sport, and it was nice to get a taste of winter a bit early (the curling lanes are kept chilly for obvious reasons. The lounge area is not chilly at all, however). There's even a small bar for beers afterwards. Highly recommend this experience if you're looking for something fun and different! read more

Had a great time at the Lunch and Learn. The instructors were terrific and everyone was welcoming and friendly. There were participants from all age groups and everyone had a great time. One of the members even brought in homemade chocolate chip cookies as part of our lunch! What a great group!! read more
