I finally made it. We got there 30 min before they closed, so I can't say anything about the crowd, but this place is SUCH A GREAT CONCEPT! Pay as you go pours and tons of choices to taste?!!! I will definitely be going back.. Also, there was live music that played tight up to the very last minute!!! You go in, and they attach your charge card to a pour card. you put the card above the tap & it "opens" it for you to pour as much or as little as you like. I'd rate Tri-It four and a half stars. Self pour bar. Lots of local and craft options with a solid variety. Good section of sessionable beers with three Pilsners and a kolsch. I had the kolsch from Schenker Beer Company. Great beer but pricey at nearly $11 in a suburban (leaning rural) area. Atmosphere was relaxed and plenty of seating for small and big groups. Try-It Taproom has 44 self-serve taps of Connecticut beer, wine, seltzer and cider. That's right --self-serve taps, just like the soda machines at McDonalds. So what's to prevent patrons from getting sloshed? There are two built in safeguards. All ABVs are under 6% and your self-serve access card will cut you off after 32 ounces (2 pints). Then you'll have to interact with a staff member who'll decide on your next drinks, just like what happens in a real live old fashioned bar 20th Century bar. When we walked in we were greeted by owner Michelle and Izzy, one of the several charming hostesses you'll find at Try-It. Izzy explained how things work, walked us over to the taps, and schooled us -so here ya go on the deets. You need to produce a picture ID (state law) and a credit card. Your credit card is then tied to a card they'll issue you which gains you access to 32 ounces of your desired beverages at their 44 taps. You can fill a pint glass or a small flight glass of anything. It's super cool because now you have total control of whatever and how much or little you want to try. I sampled three beers and two ciders. All beer types are represented, so even though I'm not an IPA guy I still had plenty to choose from. I went with a Japanese Lager named Crunchy Roll, a Cream Ale by Tox Brewing (New London) and a Whitbeier from Cheshire's Counterweight Brewery. My two ciders were Sweet Vanilla by Stafford's Crazy Cock and Honeycrisp by Yankee Cider in East Haddam. You can order food through a tabletop QR code, and we shared an excellent Everything Bavarian Pretzel and an order of Pallines (Italian deli dumplings). We really loved everything about Try-It. The very cool Hi-Tech vibe, the delightful and very helpful staff (shout out to Izzy), the food and the crazy number of available beverages. They even had live music on the outdoor patio. Every list has to have a first thing on it, and it's very cool to know that our state's very first self-serve alcohol tap establishment is right here in Avon, CT. I've been wanting to try this place since I heard about it. Sounded like a great concept and it's close to home. A few friends and I went on a Saturday afternoon when there was live music. We waited at the counter for a while before being noticed, got our cards and were shown how to use them. When we went to get glasses, I noticed some people had "flights" but there weren't any available. The hostess kindly went to find some for us. Although there were many beers to choose from, they all had low abv, and there were only 2 ciders. Despite the low abv, turns out my particular choices in beer were very expensive. For 32oz, my total was $30. I wasn't aware of this until my card was charged 2 days later, as I wasn't given an option for a receipt and there was (again) no one at the counter as we were leaving. I thought this had to be a mistake and emailed the owner but was told I chose expensive beer. I was also told the prices were clearly marked, however I don't see that in any of the photos I've looked at. My fault for not looking harder, and assuming I wasn't drinking beer at a dollar an ounce. I can't remember ever paying $15 for a pint of beer unless it was at Yankee stadium lol. I also regret that I dropped my card into one of the "tip" buckets, because I'm not sure what I was tipping them for? I did however get a receipt emailed to me for the food, which is paid for separately (and tipped separately). 3 of us ordered 3 appetizers, which were much smaller than expected and a bit overpriced, in my opinion. Before realizing how expensive the beer is here, I will say we did enjoy the experience and the ambiance of the bar. We originally planned on returning but that seems unlikely now. I had a first date at this location. It was nice as it wasn't terribly busy and we were able to sit on a couch in front of a cozy fire. When we walked in Michelle, the owner, explained the concept of Connecticut's first and only self serve Taproom. You have a card that you pre-pay and you put it in front of what you would like to pour and it keeps tabs and then at the end you drop it in a prepaid tip jar. It's a great concept but it is pricey. There's no sampling the beers as you are able to in a restaurant that would be the only downside. This location also serves food although we didn't eat. read more

Tri-It Taproom is a bit of heaven for the beer loving person who wants to try everything! It's the first self-pour taproom of its kind in CT. Here's how it works: it's a little like your laundry cards from college, they give you a card and you either attach a credit card to it, or put some cash on it, and you're ready to pour. Enter the tap area and start pouring. The taps are all self serve, so you can do a taste or a full pour. The screens above the taps give you a description of the beverage, alcohol content, and cost per ounce, and keep track of how much you've poured. The card makes you check in after 32 oz, a good policy! The taproom has a wall of 44 taps. There is absolutely something for everyone: 4 different types of wine, a few ciders and ton of local beers from blonde ales to hoppy IPAs. There's a menu of snacks and light fare to buy. The charcuterie board looked really good! The place itself is a little small, but they have some nice outdoor seating. This place is going to take off, catch it before it gets too crazy! read more

What a cool spot!! Slightly difficult to spot, don't overlook this really special spot!! The owners are on site and welcoming to all that stop by. There is a self serve beer, wine and cider wall - seriously!! The charge is by the ounce, so try a taste and see what you like! The system includes getting a personalized card that allows you to "self serve" their amazing brews. The food is also super - I tried one of the flat breads and wasn't disappointed. They were accommodating to a group of about 12 visiting - reserved some tables pushed together for our use and gave us great service. Yes! I love it and can't wait to come back! I drink a lot of variety, but very little quantity so this taproom is perfect for me. There's a long list of rotating taps and you can pour as little as 1oz and as much as 32oz. They had a lot of interesting beers on tap the day I went too. The beer can be a bit pricy, so if you're someone who wants to have a couple pints of your favorite beer, this might not be the best. The space is not too big but decore is very nice and they have an outdoor area too. When you enter, you have to get a card at the entrance which will give you access to the tap. The person checking you in does a good job explaining how self-serve works. I am a bit baffled by the tip situation. For a place that has slightly more expensive pricing already and so little service interaction, shouldn't you just pay your employees normal wages and not need tips? read more

The concepts of self serve taps are great. i've been to a few amazing places. the one thing that i notices was the selection of beer. they had all low abv beers. only one mediocre stout on for all the taps. i'm not sure why the strategy would be to only have 5% or below abv beer. i'd have to assume that its because they are the least expensive to purchase and have the highest margins for the business. there were a few good ones on tap, but no double ipas no NEIPAs, nothing barrel aged and no stouts. it made it feel a bit pricey for the actual beer served. a bit underwhelming and would probably not return for a while. read more

This place is GREAT! We held a private event there recently, and Michelle and her team were awesome, the food was great, the atmosphere was inviting, and everyone had a great time. The whole concept is amazing, self-service taps that enable their clients to experience their favorite beer, or even a flight of beer to get a sampling of some great beers from numerous breweries. The staff was fantastic, providing assistance as needed, and making sure everyone was taken care of. I enjoyed my first visit to this automated beer bar - up until the end. Keep in mind they don't have bartenders. I "poured" my own beers and the selection is fun. I was completely put off though by the exit plan - drop your plastic card into one of several clear plastic receptacles and be on your way . I lost count of how many "tip" jar options there were but I immediately dropped my card into the zero tip receptacle and didn't care for the cashier's response who watched the whole thing. Tip for what ?Aside from COVID related gratuities now in the past, does anyone tip at MacDonalds or any fast food restaurants ? No ! And they at least pour your coffee. I poured my own beers . Maybe if I ordered food, but really, tipping has gotten out of control and I'm speaking from the perspective of a former waiter. These tips" are going straight to the owner who has minimal labor costs. BTW if you accidentally leave with their plastic card they automatically charge you a 20% "gratuity" !!!! Out of control.
