I had done hours of research and settled on two brands for a new bike. I knew I wanted a carbon fiber frame in the relatively new endurance configuration with disc brakes and electronic shifting, if it was in my budget.
I checked various bike shops in the area and had pretty much settled on a brand that was not Trek. On a whim I went to the east side Trek store more to verify my decision than to really give Trek a fair shake. When I walked in I was immediately struck by how bright, cheerful and clean the store was. I was further surprised by how friendly and engaging the staff was. Everyone their smiled and treated me even when just passing by.
I'm 70 years plus and based on prior experience was prepared for what I call the "old man brush off." This is when you reach a certain age the expectation is that you know nothing, are looking at the cheapest thing possible and have no appreciation for the technology or physical experience involved therefore rendering you invisible and unworthy of the salesperson's time.
Brandon Nguyen immediately greeted me, introduced himself and asked what brought me in that day. Frankly I was taken aback for this was not my experience at the other stores I visited where, if I got waited on at all, I had to cool my heals for several minutes even when no other customers were present.
Long story short, Brandon completely turned me around. He knew what questions to ask, actually listened to me and whittled my options down to a Trek Domane SL 7 Disc. He never once tried to impose his will on me or up-sell. Before I knew it and without ever planning to do so, he had me on their Trek measuring bike, spent a good amount of time walking me through the process and got all the necessary measurements for a perfect fit.
I picked up my gorgeous, newly built, matte jet black bike this afternoon and once again was impressed by how attentive everyone was. A really engaging big guy, Dave Samson, did an initial fitting and explanation of the SL 7 tech whilst Brandon attached cleats to my new shoes and other prep work.
If more retail brick and mortar stores operated like Trek Bicycles East, retail would not be facing extinction. I can't tell you how pleased I am with my new bike, even though I won't be able to ride it for another month or so. (It is -11°F windchill today!) Everyone I had contact was exceptional with special kudos to Brandon. I spent a big chunk of change today but loved every minute of it. read more
