We had a good experience renting bicycles here. Even though you do have to pay for 24 hours and we only use the bikes for three hours, it was worth the $50 per Bicycle. They were in good shape shaped and worked well to do the ride around lake Monona the team was nice to help size us for the proper bike and get us ready to go. They have helmets available if you need one. Clean restroom. It's also a fun and large Bicycle shop which we enjoyed visiting. read more

Absolutely horrible experience at Machinery Row Bicycles. I spoke with Leo about a bike they had in stock that I wanted to buy my son for his 13th birthday this week. He told me they had the bike in stock and he would hold it for me with a $500 deposit. I told him I was driving 2 hours each way to pick up the bike and was very excited that they had exactly what I was looking for. He assured me that I would be very pleased when I got there. When I got there today, I was SHOCKED to see the condition of the 'new' bike! What a waste of 4 hours and $30 in gas. After making me wait 10 minutes for my deposit to be refunded, they offered to sell me this $2,400 bike for cost ($2,000). I wouldn't pay a penny for it! I rubbed my hand on the frame and the paint chipped off even more! I am livid that I wasn't told about the condition over the phone. Absolutely terrible business!!! read more

I needed to have the pedals removed from two bikes--they were stuck solid. The mechanic was able to take me as a walk-in, while I waited, and didn't charge me a thing. He also tightened my quick release hud and my adjustable handlebar stem! Super friendly too. read more

Recently dropped off two bikes here to have them serviced. Jake helped me with the drop off. He did a quick check of the bikes to see if there was anything major that needed attention. Machinery Row bicycles was a treat - in all respects. Was immediately greeted when I walked in, and the associate (Cameron) was engaged and attentive to my interests. We looked at several bicycles, and ultimately test-rode 2. I came back the next day to purchase the desired bicycle (2022 TREK Domane SL6, 56cm). During 'dealer prep' the mechanic uncovered a flaw in the braking system. The sales associate (Adam) looked for another, similar model - and found one in the inventory - on site! Could not be more pleased with my experience, and will assuredly recommend Machinery Row to all of my friends, colleagues, and family. Well-done! read more

Stopped in and dropped my bike off for a deluxe tune up after getting a service assessment. The total quoted included a couple of parts they identified in the assessment, and added those to the total. The parts were pricey, but no big deal. I kept the estimate. They said it would be between 10 days and 2 weeks. I got a text within that window saying it was ready to go. When I stopped in to pick up my bike, they said it would be $35 more than what they had quoted me. I let them know that the amount was more than what they had quoted, and showed them the estimate. My first contact said that they had to add a new derailleur hanger because the old one had broke during the tune up. I replied that I had received no communication about this additional part. The first staff person walked off to find a manager. A few minutes later a second staff person walked up and angrily showed me the broken derailleur hanger. Again, I replied that I had never received notice about replacing the part. He stormed off. After several more minutes, a third staff person approached me. While he was polite, I was unsatisfied with his explanation that for a part that cost only $35, they couldn't be bothered to reach out because it would slow things down. He said he couldn't do better than 10% off the cost of the part, even though a quick search shows the hanger generally retails for under $20. The level of communication and service was definitely a sincere disappointment. The total cost of parts and repair was half the original cost of my 3 year old bike, they couldn't give a heads up about a new part. Its not about the money, its about the relationship, but they were sure to make it clear that they don't see those as valuable. I am just glad I can take my business elsewhere. read more

This bike shop has been recommended for years by a bike tour company for renting. Prior to renting, I had emailed bike fitting info for them to help with getting the correct size bikes for us and they never used the information. We ended up trying our best to do the fits on our own. The bike tour was for 7 days of riding, and the bike they loaned me was in need of some serious maintenance and new tires. Luckily I didn't need the larger cassette on the last day, since I couldn't get it to change. I wouldn't recommend this shop for rentals. They might be a good shop for other things, just not attentive to rental needs and the most expensive rental I have had for a sub-par, ill-fitting bike. read more

Great fast help. But very VERY low quality tires and tubes at this location. Got a new 30$ tube (include 1minute for him to put it on). Only lasted 4 hours of riding around on Madison bike trails. Tube i had prior lasted almost a year/&half of heavy riding on mtb trails. I was thinking Mabye its my rim. But! Nope. Now new tube i bought online has already passed multiple days of riding and still holding! read more

The guy who helped check out our bike after service was not very motivated and kind of dismissive to our questions. However, one poor experience will not change the fact that you all are awesome! Case of Business done in bad faith - and reading other reviews apparently it's a common problem here for the staff to not own upto their mistakes. Rented a bike from this place for someone else. I know nothing about bikes so the gentleman on the phone signed us up for an expensive option and gave no quote. No receipt was provided either. Later the friend informed me that she was charged a hundred bucks for one day rental - more for a bike than for a rental car. When I returned the bike, I voiced these concerns and while the staff was friendly, the excuses made were inacceptable. Apparently it was assumed we must be looking for a high end bike since it was Ironman weekend. Good place if you know exactly what you're looking for or are well versed in the nuances of bike selection because if you're an average Joe, you're better off elsewhere where they won't assume you know everything about bikes and charge a hundred bucks for a daily rental. read more

Driving west from Chicago we stopped in Madison for a few days to ride the bike trails. On the first ride I noticed my front tire was split. Searched out bike shops and saw Machinery Row was right on the Capitol City Path near downtown. It's a big store with lots of bikes, accessories, clothing and a large repair area. Rode there and they had plenty of replacement tires to choose from. The tire & tube were replaced in 15 minutes at a reasonable price and we were back on the trail quickly. As an aside, the customer before me brought in two bikes, one needed a part and was left for repair. The second was fixed and adjusted in a few minutes at no charge for him! read more

I'm the kind of penny-pinching nerd who would usually rather waste half a day figuring out repairs from YouTube than pay and not learn. But when I've stopped in here out of need, I feel really well taken care of. The wrenches are friendly (last stop in I got offered a cookie because they were passing some around, and I happened to be walking by), but they try to meet you where you're at financially and logistically. I end up with what seems like exactly the most reasonable deal I could ask for - plus just that something extra. Have been to several shops in town; while none is terrible and several are very good, I think Machinery Row is the best at *figuring out what the customer needs and wants, and then delivering that,* rather than thinking there's a particular way things *ought* to be done and imposing that on you. read more

I'll start by saying I'm disappointed I have to give this place a full star. This is a "buyer beware" review. I purchased a Trek mountain bike from this place over a year ago for around $8,000. First and foremost, the bike itself is a beast! For the first few months, I really enjoyed it. Then I notice that the main sprocket is starting to dig into the carbon fiber frame. I take it back to MRB for them to look at it. The first response from the technician, and I quote, " it's just cosmetic, not really an issue". When I suggested that if he were to buy a brand new car, would he care if someone keyed it down the side? Just cosmetic, right? He didn't know what to say. They contact Trek and stated that it is a manufacturing flaw that happened during the building of the carbon fiber portion and it can't be repaired but rather needs to be replaced with a new frame. Bummer, as I know I will be out some riding during the nicest time of the year but, oh well, it happens and at least Trek is standing behind their product. Weeks go by and I get contacted by Ben the "manager", stating that the bike is fixed and ready for pickup. Along with the message I get a picture. The color scheme I chose when I decided to purchase the bike, is now an all-black frame, with weird accents from the previous frame such as the covers were still the original green/yellow. When I ask why the bike is now black, MRB states that warranty frames are always black and that is what I have to accept. I stated that this is not the product I purchased and was told, "there is nothing we can do". After a very short conversation with Trek Warranty Dept. directly, (I had no other choice but to call), Trek agreed to send a frame to their custom paint department. MRB then calls me and presents it like it was their hard work that got me this solution. *insert eye roll*. MRB then informs me that the carbon fiber portions of the original frame can not be replicated so those areas need to be painted. I agreed. (just wanted my bike back asap at this point), but I did ask for an art proof of what it will look like or at least color swatches of this new mystery color where the carbon fiber was. No go, "can't be done". Fast forward a few months, I get a message from Ben the bike is complete and ready for pickup. Once I looked at the bike, what was carbon fiber was now a weird, clashing grey, to the original green/yellow. I left debating how bad I wanted to ride vs. the ridiculous color choice and decided to message MRB within an hour and said I couldn't live with spending that much on a product and hating the way it looked. Of course, the response was they have done "so much already" that I was just to accept what they gave me and hit the road. The exact message was "I'll consider this matter, and any future business concluded at this point. We will not swap your parts to the custom replacement frame we had done for you and I will return that frame to Trek. Please feel free to collect your bike at your earliest convenience, -Ben". Basically, take your all-black framed bike home and don't come here again. Again, I was forced to go directly to Trek Warranty, who in about 10 minutes, found the exact bike as mine, same color scheme, same size, at Trek Madison East. The exact replacement, brand new, in exchange for the defective product I purchased. Instead of working for the customer, Ben and the folks as MRB are simply trying to get your money and then need you to "hit the bricks". If this was the only game in town, I would think that a purchase here should be followed up by a lot of praying that the product is not defective or breaks. Fortunately, it is not the only game. Rob and the folks at Trek Madison East are awesome and truly care about customer satisfaction. They are not just a Trek distributor with horrible customer service...**cough**...they are there to make your customer experience outstanding. There are different types of nerds in this world. You have the computer nerds, the science nerds, the band nerds, etc. One hybrid nerd are the outdoorsy nerds, part geek...part druid. Within this sub group are the bike nerds...people who just live for biking, know everything about it, and talk to you about the intricacies of bike design and construction. During these talks, you'll most likely want to crush a cyanide pill and end it all, as the glassy eyed, non-blinking sermon will just continue ad nauseum. However, before you decide to check out, know that you are in the presence of passion. These folks know bikes, they love bikes, they ride bikes, and they are most likely married to bikes (hey you sexy Trek...can I blow up your tires tonight...how about we grind some gears...maybe after we go for a spin....). They set me up with a nice touring bike rental, impeccably maintained, and sized appropriately. They also gave me a map for doing the loop around lake Monona, a 12mi ride that is challenging but also beautiful. The shop has hundreds of bikes and accessories all over, and I even saw a $20,000 custom bike there. Everything you could possibly want to complete your bike gestalt is here. As someone who works out everyday, and is an unabashed gym rat, I sensed a strong pull towards getting into regular biking after these jaunts. Machinery Row Bicycles was a life saver for me!!! I flew in from San Diego for the Ironman race and my Argon E119 Tri+ bike was having Di2 issues, it would nit shift to the big ring. To make matters worse it was the day before bike drop off. I called around some local bike shops and they were booked out or did not know how to fix high performance bike. I came across Machinery Row and Colin said bring it on in! I was ecstatic!! I brought my bike in and they were swamped! But they prepared for the Ironman being in town. They don't schedule any appointments two days before the race from what I was told. They have multiple mechanics available for drop ins and bike issues. Genius! They were friendly, patient and understanding. Even while handling a stressed out client. I wish I new about this bike shop when I first arrived here at Madison. It is a one stop shop! Great supply of nutrition and bike tools. Even there prices were reasonable. Thank you guys for being a great support to the Triathlon community!! read more

I went in with a rear flat. I knew the wheel wall was damaged so I was expecting I'd need to replace it. They offered to do what they could with the existing wheel to get the tire inflated (the advisability of which I lacked the expertise to weigh,) or to replace the whole wheel for twice as much as I'd been quoted elsewhere. At the quoted price for the cheap fix, I opted in because it seemed worthwhile. Then the actual cost of the service was twice the quote and the repair only lasted a couple days. Total waste of too much money; there's no way I'll be back for service any time soon. read more

This review is for their bike rentals. We rented 2 bikes to ride around the lake. You pay for a day $30 per bike...even though we just needed it for an hour or so it was still $30. So...the good news if you want it for the whole day, it is an okay deal, but if you want it just for a short time, it really isn't a good deal at all. Service was below average. We had to wait quite awhile to get them and then upon returning them we barely got a "nod" acknowledging us. Next time I will just have to bring my bike with me! :) read more

I would have appreciated slightly better customer service but everyone else is as entitled to his attitudes as I am mine. To be specific, I needed to get a quick bit of work done on a bike before taking it on a trip. Now, I understand the purpose of a queue for service. But is it really not possible to pay more to get it done faster if it has to be? Such an "I actually do need this in two days, beyond that is too late" situation is relatively rare, and it seems like an appropriate time for flexibility - "it will cost you double but we can move you ahead of the line." In as much as the first-come-first-serve is important, I agree, hence why you pay more. Others in the line probably won't be too upset, because the circumstances are understandable. read more

I am a total bicycle newbie and finally decided to buy my first bike. I did some research on the Internet, so I had a fair idea of what I wanted. When I went in, the staff was so incredibly helpful and worked with me on my level. I worked with Hana, and she was great about teaching me about the different bikes, letting me try them out in the bike path outside and then helping me get the necessary accessories for me to get started. Before I left, my bike was tuned up and all my accessories attached. I was able to ride my bike home right out of the shop, which was awesome. I attended the free "How to repair a flat tire" class (as of 7/2016, every Tuesday at 6 p.m.) Joel taught the class and there were two of us wanting to learn to fix a flat. We sat on the store floor and Joel got each of us a tire. We went from good tire to flat tire to taking it apart and lots of tips along they way to replace the tube and put it all back together. I found the class helpful, and appreciated Joel showing us some of the necessary tools without being salesy about it. Clearly they have stuff for us to buy, but I felt that I could have thanked him for the class and walked out without buying anything just fine. That said, they offer a 10% discount on all equipment purchases to class participants, and I did end up buying some of the recommended items. I appreciated Joel's clear and prudent advice. In addition, the cork on my bike's handle bars was coming off, so I asked if it could be replaced then and there. The mechanics were all working on bikes, but one fellow took my bike immediately and replaced the cork. What I REALLY APPRECIATE is that he gave the gears a quick tune up too and it rides better than ever. Between the quality class, 10% discount and great quick service on the handlebar job, I highly recommend Machinery Row bicycles. read more
