I am not sure I understand how this Florentine trattoria garners such rave reviews. It is right off Piazza Santa Maria Novella where we were staying so super convenient. Our hotel concierge, who was spot on with many recommendations, sent us here. It was just very average. The atmosphere is friendly and casual and the servers are certainly attentive. It is filled with both regulars and tourists alike. I expected it to be aore local and less touristy than it was. The house wine was decent but the food was for the most part nothing to write home about. We shared a salad and anchovy appetizer. Both were pedestrian at best. The highlight was the house pappardelle with wild boar ragu and that was really quite good. I get the sense that this place could be better than what we experienced but unfortunately it just didn't measure up to the high standards I expected based on other yelp reviews. read more

I've eaten here on a number of occasions while visiting Florence. The food is spectacular. This last time I had the smoked mozzarella with anchovies. It was wonderful. For my main I had the pasta with cream and orange. It was totally delightful. I have never had anything like it. Every time I eat here and try something unexpected on the menu I am always pleasantly surprised. I had the cheesecake for dessert and it had shaved dark chocolate on it and was not too sweet. I second the sentiment that I regret listening to the hotel concierge to steer us here. The food was subpar but worse, quite expensive. I had the saffron pasta with prawns as our primi and even though the prawns were perfectly cooked, the pasta was bland and had no salt in it whatsoever. Then I got the filet in green pepper sauce (their florentine steak is for 2 and is 75 euros) as a more reasonable option. It was "fine" but nothing great. The best part about the meal was the bolgheri wine (though was expensive for a bolgheri) and the chocolate souffle (which is a lava cake in America). It had nice flavor. However, at the end of the night, the total was 125 euros which was the second highest meal cost of the entire trip and I felt like I got totally ripped off. Later someone recommended Lungarno Bistrot which was what we wanted Gargani to be and at much better prices and better style. Although I do have to admire the unusual murals like the Darth Vader Shakyamuni Buddha or spider obelisk. Crazy! read more

We first visited this wonderful trattoria 7 years ago during our first time in Firenze. We had such a nice time that we remembered to go back and bring the family this time. We dined twice in 4 nights in Florence. With so many choices in this city that says a lot about the restaurant. It helped that it was easier to book dinner through the Quandoo app. We loved the Bistecca Fiorentina, but we came back a second time as we "discovered" the Carbonara the first evening. The kids all can't stop talking about it. Amazing! The other items we can highly recommend include the Bottarga spaghetti, del Garga salad, Veal with avocado and truffle oil. Had a great dinner here with a group of about 6 people. We had the full Italian meal! From the beginning we were greeted by a very friendly and accommodating staff. For food, we started with a mix of anti pasta selected by the chef and we definitely enjoyed the great variety of options! We shared a few pastas and meat dishes. All were prepared very well and we enjoyed everything. The desserts were also good but I would say the meal was the best. So if you are looking for the best dolce then this is not the place for you. Not a huge tourist restaurant which is great. I was searching for Bisetecca alla Fiorentina without a reservation and they were happy to accommodate us. Other restaurants needed them but sometimes difficult when you're traveling without a phone. Service was great, wine was great, bistecca alla Fiorentina was cooked perfectly. The most exquisite mouth feels of my life! I was on my way to a different restaurant that I found on Yelp. Strolling the streets, a place with very eclectic decor caught my eye. I knew that it was where I was supposed to be instead. I came in and saw smiling faces everywhere, strange art on the walls, and sculptures scattered throughout the space. I came up to the counter and was greeted by friendly staff. He asked if I had a reservation and saddened, I replied no. He said "You must try. I will find something for you". 10 minutes later, I was sat at a small table, grateful he made space for me. I ordered the veal with truffle and avocado. It seemed like a strange choice, but... when in Florence! Wow oh wow it did not disappoint. It was my favorite meal from my entire trip to Italy (inclusive of Rome, Venice, Ferrara, and Bologna). I've read the reviews of TG and don't agree. This place is amazing filled with tastefully dressed locals! The food is amazing and the service prompt and helpful. You can have wonderful pasta all over Italy , but where can you try a light summer pasta with citrus zest that is amazing. Yes - the prices are higher than most, but it's a special way to wrap up a memorable trip or celebrate a wonderful moment. They have amazing cocktails and pairing suggestions. There are other great menu options like carne, seafood, and even vegetarian options. I give TG a 5 - its small , so you can enjoy a great meal. This is the original "Garga". And it is one of the best meals you'll have in Florence. Incredibly friendly service, and bold flavorful dishes. We came here on our last night in Florence per our concierge's recommendation (we stayed at the Westin Excelsior). Of the week we spent in Italy this place had by far the worst service. Our waitress was temperamental and unfriendly. She had a sour face the entire time! Service was one thing but the food was just 'meh' and overpriced. For 2 people, it was $135 euros (included a 1/2 bottle of chianti), steak florentine for our main, 2 pasta dishes and tiramisu. Skip the steak florentine /tuscan style. If you're used to eating at Maestros back in the states, you'll be grossly disappointed at the quality of meat (not prime - that's for sure). I wonder why this place is rated so highly on Yelp. I question whether the hotel concierge gets a kick-back for referring customers! He mentioned that it was a place with both 'tourists and locals' ... but when we went that night, the place was 85% tourists! Go somewhere else and save yourself the money.
