This is a great local bar/restaurant in the Collegeville area. There is a college right down the street, so on the weekends it can have a more college crowd, but I've never had an issue with it. The food is your typical bar food, like wings, sandwiches, etc. They have AYCE crabs on Monday's and it does get crowded those evenings. On my last visit I ordered the corned beef sandwich and loved it. The meat was on leaner side which I prefer. Price was fantastic. If you like orange crushes, that's a signature of there's. They have an outdoor patio if you want to enjoy a nice day. And they have a little area where you can play baggo/cornhole. It's not a fancy place, but the service is great and they have long tenured staff working there, which I think speaks volumes for a restaurant. read more

I was at the Trappe for a dinner awhile ago - our group was seated upstairs (probably a party of 20?) at a long table. The chief negative (might as well get that out of the way) was service. On the positive side, the jello shots were good, my Tavern Burger ($6) wasn't too shabby (peppers and mushrooms, oh my!), there are a ton of TVs on the walls (we were watching golf that night), ample seating, and live entertainment downstairs that we could hear. Pleasantly enough, it's NOT a dead spot - being down the street from Ursinus College probably doesn't hurt either. I'd return to enjoy a band and knock back a few drinks. I just wanted to express the exceptional service we received today. Our waitress Katie was spectacular. She took great care of us. We didn't want for anything. We even had a backup drink before our first drink was done. Today's specials: the crab fries were out of this world with real crab meat (reminded me of Maryland). I also had the smoked salmon blt (chef's kiss). I know the weather is challenging for those working outside (especially going from the AC inside to hot and humid outside). I was so pleased. Massive sandwiches, great beer selection, tons of TVs; The Trappe is a hidden gem! Sure, it's a little bit divey, but it's fitting. The prime rib sandwiches are awesome and huge! They also come with a ton of fries on the side. The burgers are great too - I love that they even have bison. I have always tried different sandwiches, but the salads look really good too. I'm a big fan of trying different beers, and the Trappe has plenty of cool local craft IPAs and stouts on tap to choose from. This is probably one of the most shady Tavern I have been to. The lower level is good with lots of seating. They have a small "beach" outside, which is just sand and chairs put together. The upper level is more for family time and parties. The place is not clean, you can feel a dinghy smell when you enter, they lack good food. The wings we tried were dry and hardly had any sauce, it was like chicken legs with polio. The fried shrimp was still good. The drinks were served in an odd fashion. The Trappe used to be a solid restaurant and bar. I've been going there at least once every two months for over 10 years. The last three times I went well below average, to the point that each time I said I wouldn't go back. But I just went tonight and I am officially, officially done with it. Which is a shame because I love supporting small, family-run businesses. Sadly, now I have to say that a trip to a chain restaurant will out-do The Trappe easily now in all aspects: service, food quality, and pricing. Specifically tonight, I went during happy hour. In deciding where to go, I checked out their website (which I had never done before because I always knew what to expect). The reason I decided to give them another shot tonight was because their site seemed to offer great happy hour deals: tasty sounding small plates for $7/each, we'll drinks for $4 and domestic drafts for $3. How hard could it be to screw a happy hour menu up? We got there and the happy hour menus given to us (limited and professionally printed, and clearly well-used, so this wasn't a recent change) read that the happy hour small plates were $8, domestic drafts $4 and well drinks $4.95. Fine. But if you have enough time to change, professionally, print and laminate new menus and signs, then you have to time to update the pricing on your website. Ordered a small plate of cheesesteak egg rolls. They were so, so small. Two, less than the size of a small Vietnamese spring roll. When cut in half they were the size of Costco boxes mini appetizer egg rolls, and the quality would actually be worse. Barely any filling, all wrapper, and that wrapper was fried to within seconds of burnt. I actually cut the roof of my mouth taking the first bite and now have a flap of skin hanging down. For $8?? RIDICULOUS! We also orders drinks and I specifically wanted happy hour pricing because of an unexpected kink in the budget this week. So I specifically said, TWICE--"If you have a well-level spiced rum and not higher-end, I'll take that with Coke, but if not, just a well vodka and Sprite." Twice. She even said "OK just want to make sure I've got it right, first choice well spiced rum and Coke but if no well spiced rum, then vodka and sprite?" Spot on! I could have clapped with pleasure that the lady went the extra step to repeat it back to me correctly. When the bill came--NOPE! Whole different story. I was charged much higher prices for two "Captain Morgan and Coke." It adds up, y'all, especially with the hike in happy hour small plates (that won't even put a dent in a child's hunger, which leads me to my next point). I'm glad we waited until the cheesesteak eggrolls came out to decide what else to order, because since they were so minuscule for a hearty $8, we decided against ordering any more of the happy hour small plates, because at those sizes we would have had to order two of everything for two people and still wounding have been too full. So two mains it was. The food that came out was so bone dry I ended up going through two more glasses of water, and ended up not eating 3/4 of my meal because it was so bad. I'm giving what I can of it to my dog now. My dining partner's meal consisted of cheap, bulk food serve items that were again fried to within an inch of oblivion. So I ended up spending almost double what was planned for a bunch of things I wouldn't have paid $10 for total had I known in advance. And the service--sucked. We couldn't get anyone to even refill our drinks for a long time, but then when the dinner rush came in, they all but physically picked us up out of our seats to leave the restaurant. Let's just say the tip reflected all of it. Still the minimum 15% but usually tip 25% or more, and given everything stated above I think 15% was even too generous. I told myself it's fine because it's the last moment they'll ever be getting from me, my family, or maybe even friends I have who have occasionally gone there, because this was all so bad I'll be warning them against it. Keep in mind, I didn't even touch on my previous two very bad experiences in this review. Diner beware! Hah, decided to try this place on a friiday night while in the area. Oldest tavern in PA and whatnot. Read many reviews before doing so and goT preTty much what we exPected. The food was blah bar food...barely average. We had a Reuben (pretty good), a bison burger (not as good) and the 'world famous prime rib sandwich'. The prime rib sandwich was described as a 'grilled prime rib' and had bbq sauce on it. That could be one of those 'wow, surprising but really good' finds but in this case was 'steak-um' salted to hell with cheap bbq sauce...yuck Drinks were fine (beers and a Moscow mule, no cocktails...all of the cocktails seemed to have blue curacao in them?). There waS a band and a $5 cover. Lol, defiNitely not worth it. Still, the atmosphere was fun and lively, the place was packed and it's clearly a pick-up/date spot. If I were 20-30 years younger (I'm 50) I would have liked this spot. Now, fun for a night of people watching. Eat before coming. read more

I wouldn't recommend coming here for food. I went there for dinner with a friend after hearing great reviews about them. It was my first time there. Mind you it was quite busy. I ordered their special Stuffed Pork Crop with was well under cooked. The meat was raw and pink which is a red flag. They don't even checked to make sure the pork chopped was cooked fully. The waitress send it back. Ended up waiting another 30-45 minutes to received a new plate. That time around, it didn't taste good, flavorless, rushed after their mistake. I didn't get any compensation for the raw uncooked meat. Unless the waitress was understanding. But the whole experience was underwhelming for someone who never been there before. She brought me vegetable soup with no trace of crab in it. I told her. She said it had tiny pieces of crab in it. I told her I checked, and it didn't have tiny pieces. She said sometimes they put slivers of crab in it. I said there were no slivers. I then said I am from Maryland and I make crab soup. The only reason the broth tastes like crab soup is because of the Old Bay seasoning. She asked if I'd like another cup of soup. I said not if there isn't any crab in it. I like the Trappe, but it is not for everyone. Its a bit of a dive bar...Dark, lots of locals, not the cleanest in the world...but I'm OK with that...They pack a good crowd on the weekends, have live music, pool tables, and good specials...plus, I am a fan of the burgers and cheesteaks there! Generally this is a happy hour destination, or possibly for lunch...I've never gone there for dinner, but have had a couple of the dinner specials and have been pleased! The 1st floor is the bar area with plenty of booths\tables for dinner, basically one big space...many of the tables are moved when bands play on the stage here...I have seen some bands here, but spend most of my time upstairs with the pool tables and the second bar...there is also another area for diners up here... They also have a lovely outdoor deck which I'm sure is a big hit in the summer weather... Service...I've never had a problem with service, however I can see some people might...this is a bar first, then restaurant...I've had no complaints in my many visits there, but again, I'm generally there for happy hour or to shoot some pool. The servers seem to be local college girls for the most part. They aren't working at Le Bec Fin, they are working at the Trappe Tavern, try to adjust your standards accordingly! read more

Stopped before dropping my kid off at college. had heard it was a "go to place" for Ursinus College kids. the bar looks like it would be a fun inexpensive place for those of age to drink & listen to music. The food we sampled was pretty tasteless & below average. I had The Original Tavern Rib sandwich. It was a single fairly thin slice of Prime Rib with Red onion, melted cheese & BBQ sauce. The only thing i could taste was BBQ sauce. the fries were the only part of meal with flavor The other sandwich tried was a Chicken Cheese Steak with Onions & Provolone. The sandwich was stuffed with a large amount of chicken, but the chicken had no flavor at all to it. We each ate less than 1/2 our meal, paid & left. Service was fine. read more

Bit of an old timer bar which is fine. Food is pedestrian and they make you pay a cover even though no one has ever wanted to listen to the bands they get. If you're going to sit at the bar at the Trappe you should bring those giant orange lights they use on the runway to usher a plane in for landing. They have 3-4 bartenders on at a time yet they all seem content to stand around and stare off into space while you sit without a drink. It's almost like they see you and are flipping you the bird because the service is that bad. I've addressed bartenders by name and still been ignored. Their bartenders should tip you because outside pouring the drink you basically serve yourself. Either stay away or sit outside on the deck because it's at least McDonalds level service. read more

The Trappe, since I've started going ten years ago, has been the perfect example of "if it isn't broken, don't fix it." The food has stayed the same, with awesome cheesesteak, wings, etc. The prices have stayed extremely reasonable, especially given the amount of food you get. The environment has stayed relaxed and comfortable, with a crowd that, given the time you go, ranges from families, to college kids, to a local crowd, and to disagree with a recent review, I've always found the service generally very fast and attentive, and actually more friendly than it was six or seven years ago. One of the best parts....like a faithful old, reliable friend, the Trappe is always open....blizzard, hurricane, zombie apocalypse....the Trappe never closes early, and has the kitchen going until the end. You may want to avoid nights when the college kids swarm a bit (late Friday's and Saturdays during the semesters). Make sure to try the prime rib, French onion soup, and any bar food (cheesesteaks, wings, mozzarella sticks). I have the uppermost empathy for businesses trying to survive during this mess. And so, for the third time in 3 months, we tried The Trappe. Terrific food on the first trip, nice outdoor setup. Same setting and selection, inferior food on the second. Third try, on a lovely Sunday holiday summer's night. You know what they say about first impressions? Well, its mid-Monday and we are both still steamed about the start of the dining "experience." Were it not for the presence of my friend, I would have (and should have) turned and walked out. The hostess (a misnomer in this case) - even with her mask on - it was instantly obvious she was annoyed upon our arrival at her podium. No greeting, just a curt "Inside or out?" without any eye contact. "Um, out (I said) if there's a good table." (Take note of my qualifier.) She shuffled about 6 steps to her left, swung open the door to the deck - pointed to a small lonely high top dead ahead, and said "that one there." Remember my request. It clearly had not penetrated the mask. The table was sitting mid-stream of all traffic: waitresses, busboys, bathroom travelers, etc. Quick scan by the paying customer - me - and "how about that table to the left over there?" I asked (where a young man was cleaning a larger table nestled up against the wall to our left. Nice view, private, reduced chance of getting sideswiped. Here it comes. MAJOR roll of the eyes (emphasized by the aforementioned mask.) It gets better. Equally huge heave of the shoulders, followed by clearly audible "harumph." And - storms past us, and back to her podium (why?) Moments waiting with no reply, since I had asked in passing (her passing) - "is that a problem?" My friend, who worked in the business, mentions "the hostess's only real job is to seat you in a friendly welcoming manner." I mention that in 40 years as an adult paying customer, I have noticed that and this does not make ME very happy. Whoops. There she is, over by the preferred table, which is now cleared. Only - what? She is just staring at me. I do not react. I wait. Now she follows the stare with arms in the air. Either she means "the field goal is good" or, "well? I'm waiting!" Deja vu? No discounts, But courtesy suspended as well? 6 months in the shutdown, I have learned that I really do not NEED to spend 14 dollars on a hamburger, nor 15 on the large plate of (mostly) iceberg lettuce that was served to my friend as a dinner entree. This place is an average place. Good beer, good food, but nothing that leaves you screaming for more. Its a nice laid back townie sort of place for lunch and in the afternoon. The place does have a nice history though. Back in the day travelers between Philly and Allentown would stop here for the night. Thusly their wives would call it the Trap. Pretty basic place to grab a beer and not venture too far from the bar finger-food items off the menu. I tried the pork fajitas which was apparently out of the league of the kitchen. The pork was tough and the onions and peppers where limp and mushy, not sizzling. Wife's chicken wrap was OK, but not necessarily memorable. The layout is a bit odd and it can get pretty loud when it gets crowded. If you want decent beer, food and a much better atmosphere, go to Sly Fox or Iron hill a few miles away. Awesome food, never had anything bad from there. I've had everything from Prime Rib which I think is the best around, to seafood. Monday they have AYCE crablegs, Tuesdays Strip Steaks, Wed Lobster, Thurs RIbs and the other specials. Jake is the chef and he really knows his stuff. For the price you can't beat the Trappe. Wings are good, great sandwiches, different other specials every night. Service is above average most of the time. I love the out door deck, i can't wait till it cools down a little to enjoy it more. It is a very nice place to just hang out and the best part is they serve appetizers from dusk till dawn which is kind of perfect for people working on night shifts. Also the staff here are really sweet and kind and will do anything in their power to help people. They put quality and customers first which is one of the most important things that a business should or could do. I've eaten here a number of times with friends. The Trappe is a great example of a place that is smack dab in the middle of the road, it doesn't suck but it isn't exceptional either. The building is old and the interior of the restaurant/bar is VERY dimly lit. It isn't a bad looking place and the bar area has a somewhat nostalgic feel to it but overall it does feel like it could use a pick-me-up makeover. Everything on the menu is the epitome of bar food quality or what I like to call belly filler, it's not horrible but it isn't that great either. I've had food I thought was above average and then I've had food that was somewhat disappointing. Service is usually friendly and reliable. Prices on food and drinks are about what you'd expect. I think that they tend to put more alcohol in the mixed drinks here than a lot of bars do so that's a definite plus. For years the Trappe has been the rallying place for Ursinus college students so expect a decent size college age contingent. Trappe Tavern is a safe bet for a reliable watering hole with food quality you'd expect at the same. read more
