I've done personal training at Phoenix in the past and they also have classes. I went to a barbell…read moreclass recently and had a lot of fun. The personal training sessions were useful for me because I started working out at home during the pandemic and wanted to make sure I was using proper form during strength exercises. It was cool to try out different equipment I normally wouldn't have access to at home, like the sled (I felt like a pro football player pushing that thing), barbells, boxes, rower machines, etc. I was also pushed to go a little harder than I might during my own home workouts, but never to a point where I felt like I might be injured. My personal trainer worked with me to modify any movements I needed, and listened to my preferences when it came to full body vs. upper/lower body workouts. Of course there were some exercises I didn't particularly love (*cough cough* wall ball slams), but the point is to be challenged because that's when growth happens! Sounds corny but it's true. The barbell class was super fun. It was a small group of six and we started with warmups and agility, then moved into different barbell exercises like deadlifts and shoulder presses. We ended with some core work and it was a great workout! I was definitely sweating but loved the supportive and fun atmosphere of the class. They also offer other group classes like yoga and have memberships or drop in rates. The facility is super clean and there's lots of parking. It's a woman-owned gym that feels very inclusive and welcoming.

Phoenix is awesome! The trainers are knowledgeable, kind and encouraging! I started training here…read morebecause I didn't know much about lifting at all, and wanted to learn in an environment that wasn't intimidating. I've learned SO much, and continue to be encouraged and guided on my journey to become stronger. I cannot recommend Phoenix enough :) ‍

Great gym! I don't work out often and I wouldn't call myself athletic (see my food reviews), but I…read morelove this place! I get a full body workout in 45 minutes in a group setting with the help of a trainer and tv monitors! It's clean, organized, judgement free and fun! So, I search Facebook events regularly for new *free* activities. One day, 2 summers ago, I came across an event for the F45 Grand Rapids grand opening. I'd never heard of this F45 thing before so I did some googling and found out that it's a workout concept originating from Australia and this would be the first franchise opening within a 3 hours' drive from us. My sisters and I decided to check it out and that Saturday morning, we got to the strip on 28th street where Michaels craft store used to be. The building was just being set up with mats, tv monitors and equipment - basic floor, walls and ceiling. We ran through several stations outdoors using free weights, ropes and yoga mats. Throughout the whole workout, trainers were encouraging us with, 'Nice work!', high fives and occasionally helping us modify lifts to target the correct muscle group. It was so much fun and by the end, I made up my mind to sign up for the 2 weeks of free, unlimited classes! Since that summer, I've been going to classes randomly with my friend Nicole who goes daily. They have a 20 class pass for $300. It's steep compared to gyms that offer memberships, but I have more of an incentive to actually attend these group workouts than I do if I were to hit the gym alone. Now that the place is established, they offer multiple classes from 530a-7p, 2 clean bathrooms, cubbies to stash your coats/keys, security cameras, and a welcoming environment. I've found that the Saturday morning classes fit my schedule the best and they offer 3 classes before 11am! It's such a great way to start my weekend and gives me time to recover before the work week begins again. I'm always sore after but it's a great feeling of accomplishment after I complete 2 rounds of 27 stations of heart pounding and sweat dripping workouts! Thanks Holly, Sam, Rusty and Ashley - you guys are awesome!
