We started with the soup of the day which was lentil. It was amazing. Full and rich and flavorful. Next the Haggis Wellington which on this trip I have become a fan. This was the best of the trip. Then the Venison tenderloin and wowo. What a hit. A whole lobster fresh and tasty. And before I forget a simple dinner salad with the most delicate and lovely dressing. A hit for anything you desire. Service was a team effort and perfect.

There is an outdoor space that sits on the West Bow bend of Grassmarket, but nothing was set up for that when we were there for a late lunch. Perhaps it's a seasonal thing. All first impressions aside, it turned out to be a very good lunch. We were greeted immediately upon entering. We were fortunate to get a table without a reservation. You will definitely need one here during peak times. The service was warm & friendly. Artur was very helpful in answering all of our questions. The lunch menu is limited, but you can also order from the higher priced dinner menu as well. I was mostly amazed by the fact that you get complimentary oysters delivered to your table. My husband is not a seafood fan, so I was fortunate enough to enjoy both of them. These are large & tasty Pacific oysters grown at a farm in Loch Fyne. Delicious! It was such a great starter. I couldn't pass up the half kilo pot (lunch portion) of steamed mussels. These are Scottish rope-grown mussels. I should have ordered a kilo. They were so addicting. The white wine sauce with shallots was perfect. However, I did have a difficult time deciding which sauce to choose. The whisky with smoked bacon also sounded amazing. If I had to say anything negative, it would be to maybe add more bread to soak up the sauce. I probably could have asked for more, but I didn't. That's on me. I really wanted to return to try the Surf & Turf. We just didn't have enough time to do it all. I would go back in a heartbeat. It ended up being a great find. A great experience!

I have never seen a fishmongers so busy; on saturday mornings you can see people actually queuing outside just to pick up some prawns or whatever. I mean how many places can you say that about. And the fish is incredible. Having bought the aforementioned prawns (didn't queue though - not because they're not worth it, just because I'm really lazy) I can safely say they're the best in Edinburgh. They are absolutely huge, really fresh and tasted amazing. The rest of the food is awesome as well, even if you're just picking up a piece of haddock or something then it is the best place around. Admittedly slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but when you're getting fish of this quality that is fresh every day then you can't really complain.

Although it's right in the middle of student-ville, Eddie's is well-known all over the city and once you've bought from here it's easy to see why. The staff are not only friendly but also really knowledgeable. When I went in I needed things to make a fish pie, although I didn't know which fish would be best for it. Rather than simply trying to flog me the most expensive fish they had, the guy was very patient with me and showed me loads of different options. When I used to live in Marchmont I used to see the new deiliveries coming in every day (on the rare occasions I was up early enough, that is!), so you can always be confident that the stuff they have is fresh.

Whole fish, fillets, 'steaks', shellfish - langoustines with the whiskers still twitching, a giant tank of lobster, piles of mussels and loads of extras. They have smokies, smoked haddock, cold smoked salmon and my favourite - their own Hot Smoked Salmon. All this is set at the quaint Newhaven harbour - completely with picturesque lighthouse, dock with seats to sit and watch the boats from and a couple of restaurants. Makes it all worth the trip!

Walking into Wildfire, the brick and wood of the restaurant exude a wonderful energy and ambiance. We were greeted and shown to a table near the window and in the corner. We were close to the people at the next table, bit it offered an opportunity to strike up a conversation. The wine list was extensive, we chose a cider and the porter. They were both more than satisfactory. My wife and I shared the smoked salmon starter that was very good. It was lightly smoked, that brought out both the flavor of the fish, and enhanced it. The fish was moist and tender. Our main dishes included both the seabass and the combo mussels with prawns. The latter was the better choice with very sweet and tender mussels and an excellent sauce. The seabass was lightly pan fried and my wife really liked her selection. For dessert, we had the cheese platter and toffee cake with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. The coffee and tea completed our meal wonderfully. I recommend this restaurant highly.

There are four other preparations, Shallot, Roasted pepper, Moroccan, Blue Cheese. They all are prepared beautifully. We prefer to taste the mussels. We shared half a pot, which was enough for three people. It could be a main for one. They were deliciously plump, juicy and not a single grain of sand in the pot! The grilled scallops and black pudding starter was delicious. It was a small portion. They sat on swirls of yellow pepper sauce and were fabulous. The yellow pepper sauce added brightness and a clean freshness. It had the right amount of tangy. The black pudding had a hint of something spicy, too. It was divine! One criticism is there were tiny flies in the bread basket. They showed up halfway through our meal. I noticed two in the bread basket so we were done with the otherwise yummy bread. They were small enough that I would not have been able to see any on other tables but these were off-putting . They liked our mussel pot, too plus the Diet Coke bottle. Our Server was terrific. He was knowledgeable, listened and gave thoughtful recommendations. We will come back but hope the flies are gone.

Yelp helped us find this lovely restaurant. We were particularly hungry that night after a long flight (read "we ate like piggies"). We ordered the grilled oysters topped with cheese and bacon. While very nice, it's not in the same flavor profile as you would think of a chargrilled oyster from Louisiana. Both tasty in their own right but in very different ways. We couldn't pass up trying the mussels. I had been to Scotland 2x before, the UK overall a few more times than that. In all those trips, never knew mussels were a thing here. We had the mussels with shallot sauce and loved every bit of it (including using the bread and sopping up the liquor). Lastly my wife couldn't say no to a shellfish pasta, so we shared a plate of that too. Bright and bold, pasta kept a nice mouth feel, wife was happy as a...wait for it...clam. During the course of dinner, we noticed an older (not by much) come in and dine alone. She seemed so overjoyed to be there, ordered her food with a smile from ear to ear, the moment just spoke to us. We asked our server, who we found out later was the owner (nice!) to let us pay for the lovely lady's diner. We thought it was something nice we just wanted to do. Well, the owner and her husband came by and chatted a bit with us, and ended up giving us a toffee pudding on the house for the gesture. That was very kind of them, and we will remember our dining experience here for a long time thanks to the sweet owners. Thank you!

The appetizer recommended by our server was the mussels. These were best mussels I've ever enjoyed. It was served with a sauce made with garlic, butter, milk, and onion. It's good enough to be a soup! Our sides included brocholini and halumi. Both were excellent. The brocholini was flavorful and crunchy with a nice sauce-though know that the sauce has ham in it. The cheese, lightly fried is served with a spicy sauce that I really enjoyed, bit was too much for my wife. It was superb. We selected the monkfish and sea bass for our mains. Both were excellent, moist and flavorful fish-generous portions of each. This was an extremely satisfying and enjoyable meal. It was I've of our best in Scotland. The food is second to none! End of. So allow me to throw Portobello's contender for the Best Local Chinese Takeaway Award (of course I made that up!) into the ring. Not satisfied simply to specialise in Chinese cuisine, Keanes House goes two further and also dabbles in Thai and Malaysian to dazzling standards. Their Pad Thai and Malaysian Curry have to be experienced to be believed; their Peanut Satay Chicken skewers are sweet and moist; their spare ribs are meaty; their prawn crackers are flavourful and delivered in generous portions. Since moving to the Portobello area, and subsequently discovering this golden egg of a takeaway, I make a point of experiencing Keanes House at least once a month. Prices are completely reasonable considering a) the portions, and b) the quality, and the service is efficient and satisfactory. Hey, I'm not looking for small talk and forced courtesies; I'm looking for a right good feed. One thing I will say is the chef takes his time with the food. And that's a positive. I don't mean they take an age to deliver (they don't as a matter of fact); I just mean expect to wait a good 10 minutes, if you're picking it up, while the cook works his magic in the kitchen, taking time and deliberation to offer up some tasty, tasty goods. Asian cuisine, made with love. Boom.
