We ate here twice while visiting the area from the USA. The first night the service was better with Peter serving us. The food was decent and the atmosphere nice. The second night we had Sam a female as a server It was towards the end of the night and she was in a rush to get us through and not as good a server..Was not as good an experience the second night but the food was about the same. We went since it was near our airbnb. It was decent but nothing outstanding.i thought the tuna was good. Some in our party had the fish and chips and liked i it... the crab is served cold and not very good. They should do outside service since they are on the water and have seating but said they didn't do outside dining. All in all just Meh. read more

I have been eating here for years when I was living there and everytime I go home to Edinburgh. This i still the best sea food restaurant I have been to in Edinburgh. I have very fond memories of my visit to Loch Fyne. I went with my girlfriend at the time on a busy Saturday night, quite early in the hope we'd get a table. We didn't, but we were told if we came about about 9 we might get something. "Can't we just wait in the bar?" we asked. "Sure, no problem." So we waited, and waited. And we drank, and drank. Eventually a waiter came over and told us it'd be no problem if we wanted to just eat in the bar. Excellent. The restaurant itself is a magnificent dining setting. In an old boathouse on the Waters of Leith, it's a truly impressive place to eat. We ordered a hot and cold seafood platter, which was everything you could want from a seafood restaurant. Simple, unfussy, locally sourced and delicious. In fact, it was one of the best meals I've ever had. Amusingly, they gave us a free dessert because we had to eat in the bar. Great service. "Really, it's no problem" we said. At least I think that's what we said, I can't really remember. read more

We stopped in here for lunch before going back aboard our ship. Definitely happy that we did! Great atmosphere and tip top service. In fact we complimented the manager who was overseeing everything and was very hands on. That's how it's done. Lead by example! Our server was great as well and I'm sorry that I forgot her name. Ordered a Strongbow draft cider and as usual it was refreshing and delicious! In fact my love for hard cider started in Scotland with Strongbow over 20 years ago. I'm not really into beer so hard draft cider is perfect for me. Started with the calamari rings which were cooked perfectly. Very tender. For my main I had the Seafood Tagliatelle. We were at the restaurant today celebrating my mother-in-law's birthday and the food was very delicious: however, the service was less than adequate. Our server was asking us if we we wanted to look at the dessert menu before he even served us our mains and then when we asked for the dessert menu he forgot. The first time he mentioned that he had a late night after working nine days straight we could sympathise but when he continued to say that every time he forgot something then it was no longer acceptable. The best seafood platter ever. I've been lucky that both times I've visited Loch Fyne, it's been a really sunny day and we were able to sit outside. The restaurant location is right on the Newhaven Harbour, with a view across the water and of the iconic lighthouse. There is nothing like eating fresh seafood with a view of a working harbour. Breathtaking! The menu is not fussy, it's straight up quality food that's fresh from the sea and makes for an exquisite dining experience. It can be a bit pricey but you get what you pay for and it's wothh it. The Shellfish Platter is split into two sections, served hot it's a delightful mix of lobster, mussels, langoustine and squid. Another section over ice, you can tuck into those Loch Fyne Oysters everyone is talking about as well as, king prawns and crevettes with various dips to compliment the fresh from the sea flavours. It's a very romantic setting, I've watched the sunset, while drinking prosecco and feasting on oysters with my very best friends. It doesn't get any better than that! read more

That's another one off the bucket list. A chain, I hear you say? On your list? What kind of person are you? Well, a person who, as a poor student in a small village, saw a Loch Fyne spring up, but whose purse only stretched to a pub lunch. Seriously, a can of corned beef once was thrown out of a kitchen window. I wept, as that was my lunch for the week, gone. Happily, I earn more money now, but I had never made it to Loch Fyne. It was up there, for so long, then slid down as my coin purse grew fatter, and my culinary interests widened, but finally, we dined at the Leith branch at a family 'do. I have to say, it wasn't a disappointment, far from it. Service was smooth, and did not leave us wanting. Meals wise - I tucked into the salmon platter, which was the most expensive on the menu. All pleasant, not super revolutionary, but it all went down rather nicely. I went for the mix and match option for my main course - hake, with tomato pesto, served with twice cut chips and upon our waiter's recommendation, samphire with garlic butter (so very, very glad I went for the samphire, it was glorious!). The only couple of niggles were - the pesto was served separately, whereas I had assumed as it was a dressing, the hake would be, you know, dressed. And chips were in a trendy metal tin - found it a bit odd for seasoning purposes - and we didn't have any sauce on the table. No tomato sauce for chips either, and service did disappear quickly at that point. My pesto came in handy! Other plates around our table looked good - the platter for one, the rumpsteak, but the SR's mother noted that the quality of the fish wasn't of the best - for me, my hake was fine and cooked well, so not sure about that one - but the SRs father is a fisherman by hobby, so I count their opinion more than others. Desserts - cranachan was a disappointment, so sad. Otherwise, overall a pleasant meal and while I may not necessary choose this as my first option, Loch Fyne would certainly be a pleasant place to spend an evening again. read more

Living in Leith, there is a couple of nice fish restaurants but difficult to get a last minute booking on a Saturday. That is, unless you're willing to dine at 5pm and 'possibly in crowded space'. Ok, I had to look at other options. I was entertaining a group of 6 people (family) and since they were all fish lovers, I thought let's try Loch Fyne as I've heard good things about them. That was a good decision and I now only wonder why I haven't come here before? And why I tend to go for steak rather fish?? Anyway.. We were handed the menus: ala carte list, daily specials and set menus. Set menus are good value, 2 courses for £15. For main course I chose hake with herb crush in lobster bisque and for dessert I had crème brulee. Both were excellent. Great with white wine - could have easily ordered another bottle to the table :) I'm really looking forward to my next visit! read more

First thing's first...why aren't more lighthouses open for wandering-around-banter purposes? Rather than concentrating on the conversation of the person I was dining with at Loch Fyne I spent the entire Sunday lunch peering out of the window and wondering what it would be like to be a lighthouse keeper. It's all the restaurant's fault for having a cool ass location looking out to the sea in Newhaven. I am really, truly rubbish at making the effort to come down this way, which is pretty shameful. Edinburgh is small...there is no excuse for just staying in the city centre and never leaving. It's worth embarking on the short journey to Loch Fyne because it really is nice to be eating your seafood with a side of actual harbour in front of your eyes. Loch Fyne itself is housed within pretty awesome premises. It used to be the old fish market so has a definite maritime atmosphere to it, and it was a really chilled place to enjoy Sunday lunch, particularly with the sun shining into the bright and airy space. We shared two starters - mussels, always a winner if the cream and white wine sauce is on point, which it was, and crab ravioli with lemon butter sauce and rocket salad. The ravioli filling was tasty, but if there's anything I'm fussy about it's pasta, and I personally felt it needed a couple of pinches more salt...but then I do like my pasta well-salted, other people might not be so concerned with that. The main was awesome, primarily because a) it was delicious and b) it was lobster. Lobster, if it's fresh and cooked just to perfection with the simple addition of garlic butter is just immense, and always worth the extra spend if you're out for a nice lunch anyway. We also sampled the scallops and black pudding main, and although I'm never really the first to opt for black pudding, I did enjoy this classic combination, with the scallops, like the lobster, being cooked splendidly. All in all, a really lovely lunch. Our waiter was a cool dude too. I skipped off to peruse the lighthouse afterwards, and all was well. read more

Went here for dinner last night. 3 courses and a glass of wine (making use of the £10 set menu) strikes me as good value for money. The service from boath the greeter and waitress was pleasant and attentive and my sardine starter and hake main course w/ side of spinach were both very well cooked and presented. I'd like to give them a further half star but as ever having to dock a full one instead. The cheese board was the one minorly negative aspect of the meal. It could have done with a couple more oatcakes and maybe more onion marmalde and the slice of brie had clearly been allowed to dry out and harden a bit + the cheese knife had seen better days (the plastic handle was cracked clean through on both sides near the base of the blade). No idea if the interior's changed much since it was a Harry Ramsden's but it's well decorated and gets a lot of sun. I intend to go back. read more

This place dose it all right. There were 3 oysters I had big chunks of shell in there for they don't get the 5 star however it was a great mean. Service is very good and that is saying some thing in Scotland! If your a boring American like me you expect to have service from a service industry not a waiter that is absent the hole time. After our previous experience we decided to give Loch Fyne another go - to hopefully amend the previous review. I have to say, again, we weren't super impressed. We arrived and were first asked if we had a voucher. All that really made us think was - we were obviously missing a trick and paying too much if there were vouchers out there somewhere! We then sat at our table for 20 minutes without anyone speaking to us and we had to walk up to the manager and ask for someone to come take our order. Even once they arrived, we weren't told about the specials or any other specifics. I had the seafood platter - while I thought it was small when it arrived - it was plenty to fill me up. The fish was cooked well and the King Prawn was enjoyable. My OH had the Steak and King Prawns, which was slightly overcooked but enjoyable. The chips with weren't the best and were warm, which means they got cold rather quickly. To their credit, once we brought to their attention that we would like to be served, they apologised a few times, checked on us regularly and ensured we were taken care of. read more

Godawful! Now part of the Greene King pub chain the service was shocking, we had about 5 different servers, they were slow, confused and snarky! The food was distinctly average - on a par with a low level pub chain, not the high quality, dining experience I'd been expecting. The only good thing about this place is the location, perched beside Newhaven Harbour, I'd only go back if I happened to be in the area on a sunny day and that would be to have a drink sat outside. Visited for lunch on a wet miserable Thursday. Brought a smile to our faces. Set lunch menu great value at £11 for 2 courses. If you look out you might find a voucher for a free glass of wine too!! The choices were great & the fresh fish cooked to perfection. One of the items had been removed from the menu as the delivery had not been up to their high standard! The setting is very nice with a large open dining room. The food is cooked to the side in an open kitchen. A separate area is used for the preparation & serving of cold dishes. For those of you out there who are not fans of fish I believe the steaks are not bad at all!!!! If you wanted fresh fish or seafood to take home they sell it as well. Not to be missed! read more

I had the most beautiful fish I have ever tasted at Loch Fyne a couple of weeks ago. Took my mum as a treat when she was visiting, and we both had the ginger and lemon trout which was on the set menu. Oh. My. God. Fish was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. Flavouring was perfect where it could easily have been overpowering. Lovely, open restaurant with plenty of seating. Simply but elegantly decorated. And there is plenty of outside seating for thost cracking sunsets over Newhaven harbour (the view is stunning and you can make out the bridges in the distance). We happened to be there on a hot on sunny June evening and therefore the place was heaving. This meant that we were waiting rather a long time, with at least 45 minutes between starter and main. That was our only moan, as my mum almost missed her train back to Glasgow! But we appreciate this was likely because of the influx of folk cashing in on the good weather. All in all, the beautiful food far outweighed the slow service, therefore we will be back! read more

Only problem was that they may be slightly understaffed because our waiter was all over the place. Had to wait like 5 min to get the dessert order in, but it was worth it. The seafoods are so fresh. I popped into this delightful restaurant with a very good friend tonight and had the most amazing meal i have ever had. We were greeted by a very friendly young lady who was with us for our whole stay throughout and was so attentive at all times making sure that everything was as how it should be, We started with Oysters, Salt and Pepper Squid and a Tuna Sushi bowl (all had their own unique flavour, which could not have been any better! My friend had a seafood tagliatelle dish and i had Rib Eye Steak with the most amazing butter that i have ever tastes served with fries salad mushrooms etc, i had avery large portion if kim che which was lovely. i had vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso coffee over it (mind blowing) my friend had creme brulee . we had mineral water throughout the meal and Prosecco and a nice Argentinian white wine with our meal too and had an espresso and a light lovely Illy coffee for my friend to finish off our meal and when we finished and went to pay the bill we were told that the coffees were on the house and we were also given a voucher that when we go back within the next 4 weeks we will receive a 25% discount on our bill. what a bargain to say the least. this may not be the cheapest restaurant but it is by no means expensive. The service is second to none, the chefs know there jobs (I should know that being one myself) the food was out of this world the drinks were all served at the correct temperature which made a huge difference. for the only time in years i have found a chef who does exactly what you ask him as in how i like my steak... very blue and it was PERFECT. All i can say about my evening is that the staff and everyone included in the running of this restaurant deserve a good pat on the back. I never expected it to be like it was but it was way past that. 10/10 WELL DONE LOCH FYNE FOR THE BEST EVENING I HAVE HAD IN YEARS. The food is normally good, but the service is not as good as you would expect for the prices. Too many times willing but inexperienced staff are left in charge of too many tables.
