The husband had fish and chips five times in two and a half weeks during our trip to the U.K. He declared those at The Fishmarket the best. We walked here from Leith in search of The Fishmarket as featured on "Somebody Feed Phil." Unfortunately there was no fried crab claw on the menu like in the episode. I was quite looking forward to that. The restaurant has these weird sliding doors almost out of Star Trek that gave me problems over and over. Making two trips to your table from the take out counter? You can't get back inside without pushing through the line to order or sliding uncomfortably behind a pole to squeeze your way in. The fish and chips were really good. Two small and one large supper fed the four of us. The fries could be crisper, but it seems like all the U.K. fish and chips places are like this. Wow wow wow! I was visiting in Scotland, for my partners medical school send off. This restaurant was situated near where we were staying, so we visited here frequently. The food was spectacular, everything was prepared well and thoughtfully. Every time we came we were pleased. The service was also very good, they recommended dishes and drinks with our meals. Very nice group of people. The restaurant was decorated beautifully, it was colorful and light. I could've spent hours here! read more

Went here on our recent visit to Edinburgh. Saw it on the episode of "Somebody Feed Phil" and thought it'd be fun to visit. So glad we did. There were 13 of us, they couldn't accommodate us in the restaurant but we did takeaway and found enough tables on the deck. It was nice day fortunately and a very great setting. That along with the food made the trip well worth it. Maybe the best fish and chips of all through our travels in Ireland and Scotland. I also got an order of the crispy crab claws which I had never had but were awesome!! I didn't understand having to pay 1.5 for Tarter Sauce at a fish and chips spot but it is what it is I guess. This is a difficult review to write. The hostess and server was lovely. She made the evening as pleasant as possible. However, the shaved head, heavy nose-ringed vaguely resembling Colin Farrell lookalike quickly squashed my enthusiasm. The hostess politely asked if I was OK with a 50 minute table because they had a later reservation. I was fine with that but Colin Farrell snarled and shrunk it to 45 minutes and then half an hour. In the meantime, I was seated at the absolute worst table in the restaurant, which left a bitter taste in my mouth, no pun intended. Had I not been tired and hungry, I would have left. I had to get the fish and chips, which was even better than one could have hoped. The Standard order is one huge piece of fish place upon a bed of chips. Fish and chips came out screaming hot. They could not have been better. The fish was battered expertly. Crispy batter. The tartar sauce was quite good. It was savory, which made it luscious. I ordered the sourdough and local butter bread basket. It was three thick half-slices of tasty bread but the £ 4.50 charge was obscene. The fish and chips were definitely five stars. I took off a star for the outrageously priced bread and another star for the unbelievable inhospitable "Welcome." After thinking about this experience, I had to remove another star because I felt uncomfortable the entire meal; and it was entirely avoidable. While I would've been disappointed if turned away, it would've been preferable than being put on the countdown clock. I was invited to finish my drink at the bar and was moved to a corner seat squished against the partition. What a perfect way to cap off this experience! There was a nice restaurant at the beginning of the pier where I went after my speedy meal, for coffee. Wish I had patronized them earlier. The food was outstanding at Fishmarket but the service was so uncomfortable. The young woman and one of the managers were terrific but the other ruined an otherwise delightful meal. read more

The fish and chips here might be the best spot in Edinburgh, however it has issues it needs to resolve. We have visited countless times, both through the take-away as well as through the restaurant itself. We had one instance when taking food away on what seemed like a quiet night for them, whereby our chips were soggy. But that is one bad experience out of far too many to count. The service in the restaurant needs improving too, and this becomes especially prevalent when both the restaurant and the take-away get busy. Improve this and The Fishmarket would be almost perfect. read more

Pleasant modern place right in the docks. We sat at the bar and chatted with the nice Spanish/Scottish bartender while we ate. The smoked haddock chowder was excellent 5/5! Fish and chips were very good - mushy peas were not full mush which was nice. Would go back here and would recommend. read more

The clam chowder - Delicious. Smokey and rich. Haddock fish n chips - Crispy batter, fresh haddock. Good quality. Warning: Unless you are a big eater, don't order the large. Standard is big enough. The potatoes chips also slightly battered but not flavored battered and the batter made harder than crispy. I've had better chips elsewhere so not too impressed. Grilled lobsters - It was not that special. It's grilled lobster. Didn't wow me but didn't disappoint neither. Service however was excellent. read more

Was in Edinburgh for 3 days and everyone recommended the Fishmarket for fish & chips. We didn't have reservations, so we just did Take Out (line was a little long but went pretty fast, took 20 minutes). We got Haddock (that's the one people recommended) and Cod, and we couldn't tell a huge difference but the Haddock standard (£8) was same size as the Cod (£10). The large Haddock (£10) was big enough for 2 people to share if you're not too hungry. read more

Had a very nice meal here. Got the standard haddock and chips with battered fish. The fish was great, crispy batter and fresh. The chips maybe could have been a bit hotter and crispier. This place had been recommended by a couple of different people and described as the best fish and chips in the area, so felt I had to check it out. Made a reservation online and arrived a bit early. There were only 2 other tables seated at the time and we requested a seat by the window. The server rudely said no, that that was a reservation. Ok fine maybe someone requested a window table but there was no reason to be snapped at. Service was quick...pretty sure we were being rushed out but that's ok too as I understand it gets pretty busy here. Ordered crab cakes as a starter and they were quite disappointing. I'm not sure there was any crab in them at all. I couldn't tase any and was unable to identify the pasty orange filling. Ordered a small battered fish and chips and must say it was quite delicious. Perfect thin batter, very fresh flaky fish and hot crispy chips. I ordered tartar sauce to go with it but found it lacking flavor. I paid cash for the meal and the server did not offer to bring back change nor did he ever return with any. So rude to assume the remainder was an unworthy tip. The 2 stars were solely for the fish and the chips. The service was awful and I would not recommend this place. There are plenty of great pubs around that have equally great fish and chips with incredible service. read more

This is a great business for the Newhaven area. They do sit down and takeaway service. I opted to sit down. The place is very nice and clean. I liked the makeup of the bar area as well as the subway tiles. For food, we had two large orders of fish and chips, smoked haddock chowder, shrimp cocktail and a side of mushy peas. The fish and chips were very nice, fish was crispy and golden. The chowder was very good. The broth was not too thick and the seasoning was on point. The shrimp cocktail was also good with the shrimp being fresh and cooked well. Good place and certainly repeatable if you are in the neighborhood. read more

Had takeaway fish and chips a few times and to be fair it has taken a while but then it's good food and popular so don't expect it to be like your greasy back street chippy . After seeing the Fishmarket extolled on television as the best chippy in Edinburgh, we had great expectations for lunch here. True to form the queue for takeaway was out the door at 1pm on a Tuesday. We'd booked a table in the restaurant side and were seated immediately. Water service was prompt but no jug left on the table and we quickly needed refills. Then the wait began. Food and drinks order eventually taken, but at the same time. It would've been good to have got the drinks in first. Starters arrived hot and flavourful: langoustines, spicy squid and curried cauliflower. All good so far, even if we were an hour in to the meal and only finished starters. Twenty five minutes later, the mains arrived: two bartered haddock, one cod and one fish burger. All with chips and mushy peas. The fish burger and chips were cold, as were the mushy peas. The fish and chips were lukewarm. It was obvious from where we were sitting that food was sitting at the pass for ages before being served. It didn't seem to be an issue with the wait staff but the chef plating up at the pass. I timed one cover's fish and chips sit at the pass for 5 minutes before it was released to the waiter. Why? After we complained we were told that the chef had said it was impossible for the fish burger to be cold. The table next to us was served (also after a very long wait) as we left. They cut into their fish and steam escaped. Not the case at our table. Perhaps these are teething problems. Perhaps priority it given to the takeaway queue. Perhaps an inexperienced chef on the pass. Either way this was not the best fish and chips in Newhaven, let alone greater Edinburgh. Nearly three hours for lunch that consists mostly of a fish supper is an indication that the restaurant operations are struggling. I'll give two stars for the ambience, location and starters. The main courses get zero. I'll try the Fishmarket again in a few months: when the hype has died down and the tourists have left. Fingers crossed they have their operational issues sorted and can turn around a two course lunch in 90 minutes. read more
