If you don't know the history of Vic and his restaurants, some of the ambiance and such may be lost on you... but this is a legendary time capsule. If you have ever had crab rangoons or a mai tai or many other things, it's because of "Trader" Vic. Went after a long week of work in Atlanta. Food was nice, drinks were classic, atmosphere was perfect. If you go and are a Tiki fan, ask if Randall is going to be there that evening. Randall is a passionate historian of all things Trader Vics that gives detailed and honestly amazing tours of the restaurant and all if it's many literal artifacts. Came in as a group of 9 with coworkers late on a Tuesday evening and the staff was very nice and accommodating. The live music was winding down when we arrived, but it sounded fun and on brand for a tiki bar. We ordered just drinks and the crab Rangoon. Really liked how they laid out the different drinks in the menu - I like passionfruit and coconut, so it made finding something I like easy. Trader Vic's is an amazing "underground restaurant" in the Hilton that I am so happy I was able to experience. While I was able to try both their food and drinks, I use the word "experience," because the entire visit was an experience to me. Firstly, in order to arrive at the entrance, you are required to take the lobby elevators down to the floor that houses this restaurant only - making this place seem quite exclusive. The decor here is pure island vibes from the second you exit the elevators. There is both bar and main dining seating. My husband and I were planning to only grab a drink each, but after seeing the menu options, we just had to try a few things. We arrived 15 minutes before the kitchen closed and the staff ensured that we had more than enough time to look over the menus before we made a decision on what we wanted to eat. We both decided immediately on the "All In" Fried Rice, and oh my gosh, this fried rice dish was EVERYTHING. I honestly don't know if any other fried rice will compare to theirs. Additionally, I am a huge lover of calamari, so trying this appetizer was a MUST for me. From the chili lime aioli to the mint crème fraiche, it was everything I could want and more. read more

The bar was buzzing, thanks to a convention at the hotel upstairs, but there was room for everyone. My Mai Tai was delicious, of course! This icon of Atlanta is in the basement of the Atlanta Downtown Hilton. It was the only reason we stayed there. I have dined here at several stages of my life and now we are here for our 16th anniversary. The decor and the ambience is the same as it has been since the 80s, which means it looks like a wild and crazy tiki bar from the 1950s. Lots of bamboo lots of Polynesian art and artifacts. The chairs in Bankhead are leather, and the tables are solid with no shake. This bar has been well taken care of. The middle of the floor has a glass in area that has the large tandoori clay ovens that are used and cooking. It's really a nice artifact nestled into downtown Atlanta. Our waiter brought us water and got our drink orders, we both had mai-ties. Karen had the passionfruit version which to me was a little too sweet. Two Mai-tais are enough to put you on the floor. We are not heavy drinkers, but these are made with strong alcohol. You will never get a weak drink at Vick's. We started our meal with the cosmos tidbits, which is a pupu platter. Wonderful, barbecued ribs, smoked pork, fried shrimp, and wontons with a nice dipping sauce. We had a flight of duck tacos. The duck was amazing and they were in a wonderful crispy taco. They were in a crispy shell with some wonderful crunchy vegetable slaw on top of a duck comfit. After that we had our main dish for Karen was the loaded fried rice. I had the Kung pow chicken. Both were amazing. There was plenty of meat in the Kung pow chicken as well as the rice, not a bite went by without something tasty in it. Lots of good flavors. Mine came with jasmine rice, enough for the dish to be sure and it was properly prepared. For dessert, Karen had The Dubai Chocolate ganache. I had the raspberry sorbet both were delightful. I can't remember when we've had a better meal here, good value for your money. With the three cocktails, and the two flights of appetizers and the two mains and the two desserts it was just under $200. It was a great experience. The servers were great. The food was great. Don't trust their hours or their website. Drove 7 hours to stay in the Atlanta Hilton to sit outside Trader Vic's door at opening time and... they didn't open. No note on the door saying they would be closed. Called to ask... somebody goes to check... no, not open today, will be open tomorrow. Banners in the lobby saying they would be open today. Very disappointed. Thankfully, The Vortex is always open and a short Waymo ride away. read more

The environment at Trader Vic's is awesome, but the menu is very off-putting to some with its limited variety. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but I wish they would put a more balanced spread on the menu. They could really benefit from a burger on the menu and some sandwiches. I think Trader Vic's twist on a Cuban sandwich would be a major draw. There's just not enough small bites to make people want to come in. I went around 8 o'clock on a Friday, which should be out the door for a restaurant with this type of environment, but it was half full. The food was alright. This was just a quick bar visit during a stay at the Hilton that is above this iconic Tiki Bar. It's an institution with dark wood paneling & intricate Island decor. Through dumb luck I came on Mai Tai Thursday, so got their signature $12 Mai tai for $7 so it was a good deal. Friendly, talkative bar tenders & other patrons at the bar & a tasty drink. Might find a reason to come back. They'll validate onsite parking for 3-hours, which didn't help me as I was an overnighter, but makes it workable for In town visitors. read more

Totally recommend to impress out-of-town visitors. Ambience: underground, intimate, relaxing. This is the best way to describe it. You walk in feeling like you left Atlanta and arrived on an island. It captivated us all. Service: our waiter was appropriately attentive, listened, and got everything right. We stopped into the restaurant, walking back from market to see if they could accommodate my wife's gluten and dairy allergies. The hostess was very knowledgeable. She said right away that almost all of the menu items could be made gluten-free. So we made a reservation. When we came back for dinner, the waitress was just as knowledgeable. They use gluten-free soy sauce for all of their recipes. My wife had the " kung pow chicken", and had no reaction. Lots of great options, plus killer drinks. The drinks are always perfection, the food is delicious, the seating is comfortable and spacious, and the service is good. My only negative is that it can be a little slow at times. We live it here. It's a bit of a go to for when people are visiting, if we have a celebration but don't went to go somewhere that feels pretentious. My mum loved this place so when we celebrated her birthday in her memory this is alway where we go. The portions are very large, including the drinks. Yes they are pricy, but you are at least getting a ton of food. Plus I haven't even had a bag drink here. The space is really beautiful. It's a tiki bar but it's not overly kitschy. There's a sort of authentic feel to it. I think the biggest positive about this place is the people. If you are celebrating anything they will go above and beyond to make you feel special. When we had to postpone our Hawaiian honeymoon (for the third time) we decided to have a "celebration of life" for it to try to cheer ourselves up over it, so we went here with a big group of friends and they gave up all lei's, and a round of free drinks, and a free dessert with a a "RIP" wording on the plate in the same way a redo would for a birthday or anniversary lol. Second tiki bar in two months and I am proclaiming myself a "tiki snob". I've been wanting to come here for a long time. But it takes some WORK to get over here.....it is a confusing walk from the Marriott. You have to go DOWN at the Marriott to take a SKY bridge to the Hilton and then go down again to get on a very specific elevator bank (not all elevators lead to Vic's) and then even if you press DOWN to get to the restaurant, the elevator takes you UP UP UP to the top floor where there is a completely OTHER restaurant and then you stop at a few floors, but you are too full to fit any one else, so then down you go to Trader Vics. Phew.....I'm exhausted thinking about this trek. The drinks are OKAY. They are not fabulous. I actually went here twice with two different parties. The first time around we said "let's try something that's not on the super sweet side". All drinks were super sweet. I would have hated to have tried the ones they DID consider sweet. Not bad at all really though.....just not usually my taste. One was some sort of Banana drink and the other was a Painkiller I think. The food was.....ehh.....forgettable? Just okay? Mediocre. We had the lamb which was pretty dry; the Trader Vic salad with shrimp, which I did really enjoy; and the crab Rangoon, which was great. One other thing, but I can't really remember. We wanted bananas foster, but they were out of bananas. So we tried a different one. The dessert was the rum cake and it was way too sweet for my taste. Sickeningly sweet. For the second go-round, Mai Tais were on special for $7 each, so I had that. They were actually pretty good. I tried the all-in-one fried rice which had chicken, shrimp, pork, and all the other normal things one might find in fried rice. It was good. Not great. But good. Service is super duper slow. You'll be here for awhile. The server was sweet though, both nights. Felt bad for the one the second night. I think she had like every single table and it was impossible to keep up. Ambiance is nice. Not as cool as the Golden Tiki, but I'm not sure if that's a coconut to coconut comparison. Two different vibes. Golden Tiki is more sexy. Trader Vics is more hotely. Would I go back? Probably not. We had a reservation for 7pm, and sat at 7:50. Then kept being told that the kitchen & bar were backed up and had a long line to get things done. Even asking for water or soda was met with "the bar is backed up." The food is over-priced considering it's adequate at best. I had the fried rice and it was warm-ish and bland. Trader Vic's isn't just about getting dinner. There's a whole vibe. It is an experience. So on top of the absolutely amazing ambiance of the place, the food is phenomenal. To start, they bring out a basket of crackers and this homemade peanut butter spread that have more of a Thai flavor profile than Skippy. I was ready to lick the plate. I started with the Passion Mai Tai. It was fruity and delicious with a heavy pour. Another person in my group got the Peachtree Punch, which was also amazing. Even the non drinkers in our party had fancy fruity drinks, in fun cups, with beautiful garnishes. (The Trader's Fruit Punch and the Coral Reef) We started with the Cosmo Tidbits. Every item was delicious but we all loved the char siu pork the best. We all had different entrees and shared them all. I had the Beef and Reef an it had the most amazing, deep, rich flavor and the beef was o tender. My husband had the all in fried rice. And our two guests had Kung Pao chicken, which was tasty, but we thought it should have been spicier, and the Cornish Hen. We all took leftovers home, which were still great on the reheat. To wrap things up, we had the tableside Bananas Foster, which was fun and delicious. The flavor and quality of the food needed to match the vibe. Unfortunately it did not. Service was slow, the waiters were impatient, and the food lacked flavor (including the drinks and desserts). We had reservations and still the servers seemed to be unprepared for our larger group. We ordered food and desserts for the table. I did not have a menu, but due to the vibe I asked for a virgin pina colada. What I received (30 minutes later) was room temperature pineapple and coconut thin liquid topped with crushed ice. The flavor was okay but the temperature of the drink and the excessive ice was off putting. It should have been blended up. If they couldn't make a pina colada I wish they would have just told me. I asked for them to take it back (since there was limited room on the table). The server did not understand what I was asking and tried to instead fill the drink glass with water (even though it was nearly full). The drink just stayed unconsumed on the table. At least the desserts should be good right? Nope. The organizer ordered 2 of each dessert. The server said we didn't need 2 bananas fosters so we ordered 1 of those, although we never received it. Only the organizer received a dessert menu and the desserts were not announced or described when delivered to the table. Plus the online menu does not list desserts. One dessert was like a chocolate brownie with something spicy in it. It was not bad but needed more spice to offset the richness of the chocolate. The coconut sorbet was watery with a faint coconut flavor. Raspberry sorbet accompanied the guava cake. The cake was way too sweet, but the tart sorbet was pleasant. The lemon tart topped with a meringue wasn't bad, yet surprisingly overly sweet. Another dessert was a bowl of something, maybe mango, topped with dried pineapple. The edible flowers were a nice touch. Overall very underwhelming and long experience. For the price, the food and drinks need to be made appropriately and have flavor. We weren't told this when we ordered but heard about the "45 min" wait after the fact. I would've been fine with the wait if the food was great but unfortunately it was disappointing. We had the Thai curry eggplant for $23 and a side of the Singapore style curry noodles for $11. The eggplant was REALLY oily. The noodles was ok. They automatically added a $5+ tip and with tax, this ended up being more than the meal was worth The restaurant is located at the Hilton hotel and was decorated with a Polynesian theme. It was busy with reservations filled; thus, the long takeout wait. I was surprised they were letting walk-ins when they were back ordered. Back about 15 years ago for our 1st anniversary my wife and I spent some time in Dallas. There they had a Trader Vic's that we had dinner at. We had the most wonderful smoked chicken I have had. The smell of it permeated the whole place!! My wife has been talking about that place ever since... for almost 15 years. Well it closed... and we thought we would never have it again. Then we moved to Atlanta and found that there was a Trader Vic's here at the bottom of the Hilton down town. I made a reservation and then surprised my family with the fact that we were going there. We were very excited! Unfortunately I should have reviewed the menu before going... they didn't have the smoked chicken anymore! So very disappointing! It was the whole reason I wanted to take everyone to this venue. The place itself was a bit on the run down side... tables were old, chairs very old decor was on the old side... it wasn't like rundown to bad just showing signs of age. Our waiter was great... a very nice guy, who really spent some time making sure our experience was nice. In the end we had some ribs... smoked... that were really good. I had the lamb which was tender and flavorful but for the price just didn't have enough. My wife and son had the burger... it was ok... not anything to really write about. All of the entrees were made poorly, meat temperature was wrong and the sauces were just brown gravy with whole peppercorns. Our server apparently felt that it wasn't his responsibility to check on our table or our dinner. And to end a lackluster evening, 2 of our party ordered desserts that were supposed to be the same but were 2 completely different items. And the hostess was nowhere to be found to validate parking. For the amount we spent on this dinner there shouldn't have been any issues from start to finish. This was the third time we have been to Trader Vic's and it will be the last. The restaurant is so much bigger than you think. The vibe was totally there. The colors, landscape, smoker, and tiki ambiance is all there. Very convenient to get to you if you are staying at the Hilton. They were able to set our big party pretty quickly, but the service was pretty slow. I think that was because it was super busy since there was a conference going so I'll give them some grace on that. I got the salmon dish and the first order was raw. Located on the lower level of the Hilton hotel is a step into island paradise brining back the sights and tastes of the Hawaiian islands. The restaurant is big with several rooms that wrap around and eventually ends into an outdoor bar area. The meal was delicious which came with a small flat bread basket.
