One is either an enthusiastic shopper of Trader Joe's or someone who is 'not so much'. The latter is me. I share my bias right up front. (What? We all have them.) So while I am not a TJs acolyte, even I was happy to have one open in Meridian, closer to my home and with a decent parking lot no less. It makes my maybe two times per eighteen months visits to TJs more convenient than the parking mess at the Boise store. WOO-HOO FOR THE CREW!: Whenever I shop at any TJs I so enjoy the friendly staff, which I think are called Crew - in the way of Gilligan's Island three hour cruise kind of fun kitsch with their island shirts and so on - who are cheer filled and helpful. So it is at the Meridian store where the crew are particularly delightful. The people who work here make it more pleasant for shoppers. "MAMA EARTH" SHOPPER PROFILE BE ME: We all have consumer profiles. I am a close to the source kinda shopper who celebrates things local, organic when possible and providers using sustainable practices. Local farmers, ranchers husbanding humanely raised pastured and free range animal proteins, local bakers and harvesters of domestic sea proteins following healthy oceans standards. You'll find little of that at TJs. And good, fresh food stores should have a fresh aroma walking in, in particular in the produce aisle. TJs doesn't in any location. Maybe because much of the produce is pre-packaged or conventional production. Also I buy little in the way of package goods (as they're called in the industry) and when I do, say tomatoes in cans or dried die-cut pasta in bags or condiments in jars like preserved lemons or harissa, I have certain brands I'm married to. TJs doesn't carry any of them. Still, there are a handful'ish of things I like to buy at TJs. I won't lie. The items on my list include dark chocolate covered dried cherries, TJ's brand pineapple salsa in jars, the 'lite' version of TJ's brand of kettle corn (thanks to my friend Joy W who got my husband and I into that), their brand of salsa verde (very handy in a pinch when I'm too lazy to make my own) and their branding on a cheese named Unexpected that tastes like a premium aged cheddar with hints of Parmesan. From time to time we might pick up something else when we're in there (like today's organic avocados) but by and large we're in and out with a short list and a very long time in between visits. DIFFERENT STROKES: Trader Joes has earned a community of fans and even a sort of social culture. Back in the day - like 25 years ago - before I knew what I know now about food production and sources, I too was a "Frequent Flyer" TJS shopper when one was in my neighborhood. I reflected on that as a three women who recently relocated here from another state were chatting in the frozen foods section of TJs today, with their carts piled with goods, noting that in the city they came from in Utah TJs was 'the' sort of community social - networking place next to their church events. They said they were already finding the TJs in Meridian had that same sense and were so happy to find that so. Different strokes... LOCATION & PARKING: This location is where Rosauer's grocery used to be, so a big paved lot. ACCESSIBILITY: TJs does a good job of this at almost every location and so it is here for level in the door, all on one floor, ample floor space and so on. The parking lot has accessible (ADA) parking but not enough to meet ADA for total numbers and there are too few van accessible spaces. But that is an issue for the strip mall owner to fix.

Being in Meridian the fifteen years, I've seen quite a change in the Boise MCA and still remember the day that Trader Joe's opened in Boise. Fast Forward to October this year and now we have a Trader Joe's in the Huckleberry section of the dearly departed Rosauer's grocery store. The Meridian TJ is larger than the Boise counterpart and wait ... The best part is that there's plenty of parking on Meridian. I love me downtown Boise and everything that goes with it but trying to get into the TJ / Chipotle / Panda Express / MOD Pizza parking lot is a Pain in the --- No such issue here in Meridian. The whole Rosauer's parking lot is available for TJ as well as the defunct Gold's gym parking lot. There's a lot to love about the Meridian TJ from the expanded flower section, the longer aisles, and dedicated vegetarian / vegan section but the entrance and exit doors are wonky to say the least. I get it that they were trying to incorporate the structure from Rosauer's but it's confusing and peculiar. The employees are super friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The trademark flower printed short sleeved shorts are in colorful abundance. Here's some of my fav things to find at TJ 1. Banana Bread - Its so good and Vegan 2. Everything Ciabatta Rolls 3. Pain aux Chocolat. - In the frozen section 4. Oak Milk - Fantastic dairy substitute 5. Cauliflower Bites - In the frozen section 6. Greeting Cards. - They are all 99 cents / $1.00 each 7. All and all flowers. If you're looking for Charles Shaw, you'll find him all the way to the right. He may not be two buck chuck but you may find three buck chuck. What I've noticed is that each Trader Joe's has its own unique flavor and spin. Meridian is no different. It's not as hipster as Boise but it feels like home right here in Meridian.

I think the time before that was to grab a sandwich from the deli for my husband. Conveniently, my hubby wanted a snack so I stopped in to see what I could grab for him. I saw a gentleman pull some fresh pepperoni pizza out of the brick oven. That was my sign to grab my husband a couple slices, he loves pizza. The gentleman helped a couple guests ahead of me. He greeted me but realized he was out of gloves. So, he went to the back to grab some and the gal who was starting the dough stepped in to help me. She asked if i wanted some pizza and of course I said yes. Looking at the pizza, there was no real rhyme or reason to how they sliced it. All the slices were different in size. Not one is the same. One huge slice, many smaller slices and some slivers. I asked her if 2 smaller slices count as 1. She said yes. I wanted a total of 2 big slices. I was in the middle of asking her and was cut off cause I didn't answer her if I wanted pepperoni or Hawaiian. I was literally trying to talk her that I wanted a total of 4 slices to make 2 big slices and was shut down. I took my 2 small slices and went on my merry way. I honestly didn't even want to take the slices I had. The whole interaction with her was tasteless. Why would I want to bring this to my husband? I have never worked in a Deli type job but I have worked in the food industry. Today's interaction with the gal was such a turn off. Maybe she should stick with making the pizzas instead of helping customers. What a complete waste of time coming in and grabbing 2 uneven slices of pizza. I haven't been in for a long time before this and I don't see myself coming back anytime soon. I'd rather buy a full pizza and have my husband toss the other half of the uneaten pizza than be treated like how I did today.

Natural Grocers was the OG. Before Whole Foods, Sprouts, and before the Boise Cooperative, it was Natural Grocers. It's a great story, look it up and read about Margaret and Phillip Islely, their $200 bucks, and their dream. I've visited several times, and while it may still have a following, it gets lost in the ever-expanding sections of your traditional grocers. It wasn't long ago, that you would NOT see vegan cheese in the cheese aisle, or plant-based meats in the meat section, but now they are there, whether it's something you eat or not. The vegetable and fruit section is smaller than the Co-Op at the Village but sometimes it's good to have a second chance. The vitamin section as well as the community hang-out section to the right when you walk in should not be missed. One thing that often gets missed is that some shoppers see these grocers as vegan or vegetarian. Looking at this Yelp page I was surprised to see reviews, some not flattering, dating back to the 2010 - 2012 era for the same business name at this location but that one closed, years ago it seems, and this is now new ownership and focus but the same business name. Recalibrating. As it were. My first visit in had me eager to go back again as new place wobbles get worked out and the growing season allows them to bring in more local produce. They have what is available in that now and for the other produce they stock it is all organic so works for me! WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE SERVICE: I'll mention product below, but what stood out for my husband and me on this visit was what nice people work here, how helpful everyone is and how much one feels a good spirit of welcome and care in the space. Delightful. PRODUCTS: Produce, flours and grains from local mill, local honeys (the one we chose from Panoptic Apiary in Middleton is excellent), local poultry and beef in a freezer case, dairy (including raw milk if that's your thing) in a dedicated refrigerator case and another with things like a variety of really good salsas, house made guacamole, jarred sauerkraut and...the list goes on. They had Symms cherries, the first of the season's crop, in the store and they are excellent. I picked up some other produce to round out what I needed at home, most of it not local farm grown at this point in the year but all of it fresh and organic. I'm hopeful they'll be able to expand to bring in some farmers, like those who are at the Boise Farmer's Market, to round out their local produce offerings. Gaston's Bakery bread was on a rack and I learned the baker delivers to them daily. They were giving away flowers from a local grower and said they would have more coming in to sell in the store. The flower farm name was Sunny Stems (Caldwell ID) and on the card that came with the flowers, I loved that the owner, Ineke Severa, identifed herself as "grower & dreamer". HEALTHY AND SWEET TREAT SURPRISE!: There is a 'Smoothie' sign above the check out counter and given I have never learned to appreciate those, I didn't study it but then just as I was leaving I saw the sign alongside for a frozen banana whip sweetened with dates. I am a sucker for dates so I ordered one with optional fresh strawberry topping. It was dee-licious and even in the smallest size (only $4 for 9 oz), it was shareable by two. I would go back just for one of these again. PARKING: Ample amount in private lot. ACCESSIBILITY: There is an spot marked with wheelchair emblem paint in the lot near the door but it is not compliant with state building code or ADA because the striped access aisle is on the wrong side of the vehicle. I pause here for a little venting, I don't know who owns the lot but for Pete's sake, there have been crystal clear guidelines in both the ADA law and code for what will be 36 years next month and how this is gotten wrong is beyond understanding. It makes a big difference to people who use wheelchairs and it is embedded in law and code for a reason. That the city of Boise allows these things to go uncorrected is maddening because it is their job to enforce the Access Building Code, including in parking lots. End of vent. Other than that the inside is fully accessible for floor space and check out counter height. LOO: There is one so you can plan accordingly if you want to order a pot of their French Press coffee that was listed on a board. IN THEIR OWN WORDS AS PS: Owners spend time to write marketing material and mission statements and I think it is important to share them. Here are these owners comments as shared on their site titled: ROOTED IN IDAHO. BUILT FOR YOUR TABLE. "town and Country Market was born from a simple belief: the best ingredients don't come from a warehouse across the country. They come from the farm down the road. We've built relationships with Idaho's finest growers, ranchers, and artisans so that you don't have to wonder where your food comes from. When you shop with us, you're buying from the people who planted it, picked it, and made it with their own hands. That's not a marketing claim. That's just how we do things. From the rolling orchards of the Snake River Plain to the cottage kitchens of the Treasure Valley, every item in our store carries a little piece of Idaho in it. Come on in and taste the difference."
