This TJ's location has a parking lot that's about as tight as most TJs. Furthermore, it is a small store and often does not carry more than the basics. They sold out of the Halloween cookies and potato crisps early. I also have to get my snacks (dried apples, truffle cheese crunchies, almond butter pretzels) at other locations since they don't carry these products here. read more

This Trader Joe's has a spacious interior and is up-to-date in being stocked with the newest Trader Joe's items. However, I find myself going grocery shopping here less and less due to the price increases and mediocre quality of produce. The price-per-item doesn't seem to be worth it anymore; I used to come for the cheap snacks and produce but am finding that the .99 added to the end of prices are just really adding up. At this location in general, I'm also seeing how quickly certain items run out (eggs, celery, packaged frozen goods) and don't find myself wanting to wait until they are been replenished. Parking at this location also feels quite tight. I appreciate the staff helping the elderly get groceries to the car and service there has always been friendly. I'm also a big fan of the house plants displayed outside, but unfortunately a bit too pricey for my liking. read more

A meal prep week of shopping and there's no frozen riced cauliflower? Hum? I was asked at checkout why there was none in stock. My cashier, David, suggested I try the fresh produce version. What? I didn't know it existed. He stopped and grabbed me a bag. We both agreed the frozen version yielded a bit of water. David said he orders the produce and thinks it much better. The fresh is just riced cauliflower. Perfect! Since I heat my work lunch, I used it straight out of the bag. Topped with the Palak Paneer and chicken, I'm so ready! One of the few places I go to do my grocery shopping during this COVID-19 period. There have been some times where I wanted for ~20 mins, and other times, around 5 mins. The folks here are efficient and friendly, and do a great job managing the lines. They communicate how many can go into the store and whether you are next in line and such. In terms of them being well-stocked, I'm able to find what I need, minus flour and some stuff that has been gone in nearly all grocery stores. I did hear that another local TJs had some TP and other paper goods during senior hour, but haven't seen it myself. They've had bread, eggs, milk, and other basic things. Their meat section has been stocked, and their frozen section has been full too. I stock up on my frozen foods here, and my fave frozen foods here lately are their orange chicken, kung pao mochi balls, spinach artichoke dip, hash browns, tator tots, veggie samosas, and so much more. They have a good amount of wine and other liquid courage, and the lines during this time haven't been bad in regards to check out. The most I've waited was just behind one other person. Of course, we're buying lots (over $100 worth) of groceries at a time to limit the number of trips, whereas in the past, we would go whenever. read more

I freaking LOVE Trader Joe's! So, I decided to go out shopping today rather than continue to Door Dash/Insta my groceries. I've been under the weather for about 7 months so it was an auspicious occasion... I went through the flowers and bought a beautiful, fresh bouquet of tulips, then basically cleaned out the produce section and the fresh bread section and couldn't stop myself with all the cheeses and then some pesto and grabbed my fav grapefruit juice. My cart was getting full, but wait! The frozen aisle. I got my favorite feta philo and some lovely flat bread pizza. Next, I headed down the well stocked and highly organized, super clean pasta aisle. Grabbed some favs and headed to the wines. Every aisle there were happy employees stocking things and asking if anyone needed help. I made my final selections and headed to stand in line to pay. A sweet, and wonderful cashier (I hate myself for not getting her name) called me over to her lane. She was unloading my cart and asked how was my day? LEGENDARY! I replied. I told her it was one of my first times out of the house and doing errands and I was so happy to be at TJ's. She asked why, and I shared with her and she was so super crazy amazing--she brought me a bouquet of gorgeous flowers and welcomed me back into the shopping/grocery world. I started crying and hugged her but thought, "Wow, how freaking awesome for someone to care and brighten my day like that." I have always loved this location and Trader Joe's actually, but this stood out and will continue to for as long as I reside in Lafayette to remind me there is no better place to shop than Trader Joe's! Had to make a stop with my toddlers and one was melting down half way through a necessary trip. Instead of making me feel like a bad mom for having unruly kids (she just started at a new school and we were leaving the pediatrician's office and it had been a long nap-free day of changes), they gave me a bouquet of flowers and acknowledged how hard it can be to be a mom. The Lafayette store is a poorly managed store. There are not enough employees, and the products are all sorted way back on the shelves, which make the shelves look terrible, and the products are difficult to reach. And they're out of toilet paper again. read more

I have fond memories of this branch of TJ's - it's a super easy place to stop off after a visit to Lafayette reservoir. It's usually not too crowded and it's about the right size for a pleasant shopping experience. However, I find myself going to TJ's less and less often, for two reasons. First, a lot of their food is mediocre when it comes down to it - it's just REALLY well marketed. Second, I avoid many of the items at TJ's for ethical reasons, which I'll list below. A little background: Trader Joe's is owned by the German retail company, Aldi Nord. Trader Joe's is often viewed with fondness, like a quirky friend that brings you interesting things to eat. But, as with any company, we should be looking beyond that strategically nurtured image and focusing on the company's impact on society and the planet. In other words, we should be asking: How ethical is Trader Joe's? I'm giving Trader Joe's 2 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact for the following reasons: * I was surprised to find that there were no pasture-raised eggs to be found at Trader Joe's. 40% of their fresh eggs are still from caged hens, which live their entire lives in a space equivalent to a letter-sized sheet of paper. The Cornucopia Institute has compiled a humane scorecard for eggs and Trader Joe's eggs get their lowest rating: 1/5. I think it's a fair assumption that this also applies to their products that contain eggs. * There's almost no transparency on Palm oil sourcing at TJ's. A customer service rep revealed that TJ's still source palm oil on commodity markets or, at best, from an RSPO-certified supplier. Sourcing on commodity markets provides no assurance that the palm oil is obtained without slavery or deforestation. * TJ's is focused on processed rather than fresh food, which increases both the packaging and carbon footprints. Even a lot of the fresh fruit and veg are packaged in plastic and not much of it is from local, organic farms. * There's no bulk section for staples like flour, sugar, nuts, etc. * TJ's is a notoriously secret company. It's almost impossible in some cases to find information about sourcing. This secrecy over suppliers and ingredients leaves consumers in the dark regarding ethics. * Suppliers of a few of their own-brand products were revealed by recall to include ConAgra, PepsiCo, Nestlé, and the Wonderful Company. None of these companies rates well, ethically, in my opinion. * On the positive side, you can find a few ethical products and brands there, like Miyoko's vegan butter. * TJ's reportedly does a good job of donating leftover food to food banks. The bottom line is that although Trader Joe's is fun and cheerful, it doesn't rate so well, ethically, in my opinion. TJ's is generally a fun experience especially since they are constantly coming out with new and seasonal items. It became almost unbearable during the lockdown with the crazy lines, mean customers, and hoarding but it's definitely become fun again! This was my first visit to this location and from the map it appeared to be right off the freeway (which I quickly realized was not the case). However, I am somewhat familiar with the Lafayette downtown area (relatively small) so it wasn't too hard to find. Team members are just as energetic and helpful as other locations I've visited. My first time buying Rambutans and the team member was very helpful with my questions about them. He also didn't judge me for my multitude of frozen treats and instead complimented on my excellent choices! :D Layout is different than other TJ's I've been to and I felt a bit disoriented at first but that just meant more time to browse and look around. Prices felt slightly higher (but it feels that way almost everywhere now?) but the prices are still very affordable for a quality product. Notable price increase - Butter - it's gone up at least $1 from my recollection Date Syrup - double the price from the last time I purchased which wasn't that long ago so I skipped it Eggs - price keeps increasing but still more affordable than other grocers Teeny Tiny Avocados - $1 more than the last time I purchased so I suggest picking the unripe ones so they last longer unless you plan to eat them quickly My favorite thing purchased on this visit was a 12pk of Swell Hard Seltzers for a whopping $4.99! It's no White Claw by any means but for that price it's a steal! Worth a visit if you are in the area for some quick treats/snacks or need to do some grocery shopping after a meal in the plaza at one of the eateries. Friendly and helpful team members which is always appreciated. Parking lot is on the small side but it is in a shopping plaza so yes to free parking! Pro-tip: The ice cream and frozen treats section is actually by produce area so finish your shopping first and on your way to check out pick up your treats so it won't be a melted mess. read more

In the Spirit of the Season, Thank You for offering up a bevy of Christmas cookies, confections, ales. TJ's is a solid stop for this time of year. Always appreciated. The Samuel Smith seasonal ale was quite good. The German gingerbread always sell out too fast! Good for your business. Glad you get them in and at a reasonable price. On that note, since there are various displays and locations throughout the store highlighting Christmas-oriented items, why was there Classic Rock Top 40 from the 70's and 80's ( which I do enjoy ) playing overhead? I asked the cashier ringing me up and he promptly asked me if I had ever worked retail. Yes, my reply while adding a note of understanding regarding hearing the songs over and over throughout the day. ( Isn't it that way with other "loops"? 70's, 80's? I'm gonna answer my own question in the affirmative, i.e. other times throughout the year I hear the same-ol'-same-ol' at this and other Trader Joe's stores. The reason doesn't add up as for turning off the Christmas music. ) It is C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S. Constructive criticism: Since you are relying on customers like me to purchase various Christmas items throughout the Christmas Season helping support your local business in the sale of Christmas products, keep the Christmas playlist going out of respect for your Christmas customers. As I mentioned to the cashier, when I worked retail ( through the Christmas Season, FTR ) I endured it ( the constant Christmas tunes throughout the ENTIRE day from morning opening to night closing ). This cashier looks like he's in his 50's. He can handle it. Don't penalize the evening / night customers, in effect, because you're tired of the Christmas playlist. Re-focus the complaint to gratitude. You'll survive. read more

COVID-19 review: I'm based in Oakland and the TJ locations there are a MADHOUSE. I decided to drive 15-min out of the city to Lafayette and it was such a good decision. I went on a Friday late afternoon around 4 pm. There was a line out the door, but the wait only took about 15-min (it was a fraction of the length of the lines in Oakland). Plenty of parking in the parking lot as well. Since TJ's is generally smaller than most other groceries stores, the number of people let inside at any given time is actually pretty small as well, so the shopping experience was rather pleasant. No bumping into people, clear aisles, and best of all, stocked shelves! For the most part, everything was in stock -- from bread and produce to meat and snacks. The ONLY shelves running low were, of course, the baking and toiletry shelves (but that was expected). All of the cashiers were working so there was virtually no wait time. Overall a stress-free experience. If you live in Oakland or any other dense area, it's worth driving out to the 'burbs. You'll even probably end up saving time. And gas it so cheap now anyway. read more

I was lectured by one employee for driving the wrong way down a parking aisle (I did not see the arrows on the asphalt, my bad) and then the cashiers ringing me up were far too busy chatting among themselves to show a modicum of politeness toward a customer. My Covid-19 review for this TJs is long overdue... Ya know when all madness broke in early March it made it almost impossible to get inside a grocery store or even want to for that matter. I caved as I need some necessities along with my fav TJs snacks. Let me tell you from the get when I first went that first week of April, this location had it down to a T for their procedure. The Line was long but you were in it for maybe 7-10 mins. 6 ft markers laid out for customers to wait on. Carts were being wiped down and given to you as you approach the entrance. You must wear a mask. The monitoring of customers exiting and entering was spot on. I must say for all the new adjusting and craziness going on- the service was absolutely amazing. I couldn't find one of my fav items and the cashier stopped ringing and went to go find me the item I wanted. All on their own no complaints. Besides that everything is always stocked, all the tine. They bag your groceries with their bags (no charge) and have a whole system just down. They even assist you parking in the lot with directing you. I really appreciated it and it makes me feel safe while shopping. Go Trader Joe's because you guys have adapted greatly through the whole COVID-19 madness. I could definitely get used to shopping like this moving forward. read more

My local TJs. You can always be sure that something needs to be returned to the store. Seems fruit and veggies or cheese products are bad. Bought a large tray of raspberries. Half over ripe, squished and into the garbage. Cream cheese bar sour and curdling. Bottled (in a jar) red peppers go bad in days. Tired of returning produce and goods which are obviously bad or thawing from being ....frozen??? Trader Joes has secrets you don't want to know. TJs can do better. read more

Really love this Trader Joe's location. We were in the area for a Saint Mary's softball camp eating across the street at the pho place. This area have a lot of parking was nestled in a little neighborhood not too far from the freeway exits. There's a lot of great choices here when you walk in and definitely if you're a plant lover check this place out as soon as you walk in there's plants everywhere out front and some really good choices. The service was amazing. Everyone that we ran into was very helpful, saying hello and said if we need anything, let them know like any Trader Joe's it's always a fun experience with all the special releases stacked up for your liking and your review, not too loud not too busy then again it really depends on the time of day when you do go there's lots of food choices a lot of snack choices and they do have a really nice wine and beer section so check it out but if you're looking for recommendations, some of the employees will give you a good one, and some will tell you the truth that they don't know if you're in the area check out this Trader Joe's get what you need and hit the road read more

This is my favorite Trader Joe's. Since we were in the neighborhood today, we stopped in to get some things on the grocery list. This store is bigger than most and their selection is great. We look for organics so I am pleased I can find a lot of choices here. The prices are a lot cheaper than Whole foods and Berkeley Bowl. Mother's day is tomorrow and they had beautiful bouquets of flowers for less than ten bucks. I like the orchids at TJs because they are great quality and reasonable. If you find ones that are not fully blooming yet they tend to last a really long time. Maybe your mom would like an orchid too! On the way out they gave my daughter a balloon and that made her smile. They yell out their rules like people are deaf. I will not return to this store and if all customers do not return to this store they can do us a favor and close their doors for ever. Kinda dinky for a Trader Joe's. I went here for a change for lunch. Now, they've never had a huge selection of stuff for lunch (no salad bar like nearby Diablo Foods or my regular Whole foods), but you can definitely get by for vegan options. I ended up with my favorite eggplant wrap and a kale salad. I refrained from getting the vegan cookies. Didn't look at the beer (it was lunchtime), but I imagine it's nearly identical to other stores. I probably won't go back anytime soon - it's out of the way for me, and I prefer Whole Foods for lunch. Still, there's nothing really wrong with this store apart from feeling small. read more

Today I hit the trifecta and got one of each tissues, TP and paper towels, the latter thanks to 'B.O.B.' who found me a package in the back stock room at closing time (I was getting it for a home- bound person).Because Trader Joes is limiting one of each paper good) item per customer it allows they stay on shelves longer. read more

I don't know why but for some reason I always assumed that Trader Joe's was way more expensive than Safeway. I started shopping here for the family I work for and realized that there are certain items at Trader Joe's that are cheaper than Safeway. A gallon of milk (non-organic) for instance is cheaper here! I absolutely love the free coffee and free samples. I have been able to find some really great new cheeses thanks to the free samples. The Salted Caramel Gelato is my go-to dessert when I am looking for something insanely sweet. I love the Chinese entrees in the frozen section. Trader Mings Kung Pao Chicken is something I make at least twice a month. The falafel in the frozen section is really delicious, I am a sucker for a quick and easy falafel. I also find really lovely greeting cards here and they are only $1!!! I like to stock up each month. The flower selection is beautiful and really well priced. The variety of plants that are on display are always interesting and I am always so tempted to buy a new plant every time I come. The customer service here is on point! Every single employee that I have interacted with has been incredibly kind and professional. The parking here can be a real nightmare during the weekend and 3pm-6pm on weekdays. I am lucky that I live near by so I can just walk. read more

BUYER BEWARE Just this morning the cashier stole $10 in cash back from our debit transaction. Was snotty when we checked out and miraculously was nicer when we came back immediately to check for the cash as it was not wrapped up in the folded receipt she gave us. They audited the drawer to check and of course it balanced! She stole it! If that wasn't her aim in the first place she would have initialed on the receipt. They wouldn't check her belongings and gave us an HR number to call with our complaint. We'll see how that goes... Not much faith in Trader Joe's right now. If Cathie is your cashier it is best to cancel the transaction and go to another line. EDIT: TJ's customer service actually returned our call and was very understanding. The said that unfortunately the crew members do pocket the cash from time to time. They are doing an investigation into this incident. Bravo to TJ's for customer service! read more

I get that masks are required and I'm sure the staff will not allow entry to a customer without one. People still have to stand in line and observe the six feet rule. Why did I just see an elderly man covered in feces all over his backside and his pant leg carrying a feces covered tissue in his right hand allowed to go into the store? I guess because he was wearing a mask? That was an actual real health hazard. I understand that he's elderly and probably can't control his bowels but allowing him to go into the store was completely irresponsible & unacceptable. There is no way the employee who allowed him in could have missed it, it was that bad. The woman standing behind him took a giant step back when she saw it and I had to leave because I was literally sick to my stomach. 3:45pm today. The least I could hope for is that an employee followed him around to the store to disinfect anything that he came in contact with, but I doubt that happened. Came in with a pal who drove. Parking was easy. Not super-crowded, but there were lotsa suburban women cruising the aisles in total la-la land. Because there were no other shoppers in the store besides them. (Eye roll. LOL) Found most of what I needed Kinda panicked when I couldn't initially find the corn salsa (which has been discontinued before). But a young male employee helped me find it. YAY!!! They were out of Jarlsberg cheese. :-( This is probably my fave TJ's, between Concord, Walnut Creek and Lafayette. Lafayette's staff are MUCH kinder and more friendly than those in the other two stores. And the store is pretty easy walking distance to BART, on which I rely. I give this store 4.5 stars. read more
