Best Overall Trader Joe's in the Bay Area! This is absolutely one of my favorite Trader Joe's in the Bay Area, from the layout to customer service, freshness, quality and product placement it's all utterly fabulous and then best shopping experience you will have. Atmosphere and customer presence are far more pleasant and relaxed than other locations for the most part due to the leisure feel of the Capitola by the Sea. The population of customers are laid back surfers and retired elderly individuals, no panic, no stressful race through the aisles, you can browse and look at everything you please and really enjoy your trip to Trader Joe's.

I enjoy shopping at Trader Joe's, the vibe is overall great. The prices here are nice and so are the products which is why I enjoy going all the way to Capitola just to shop here. Their frozen food is delicious. Most of the staff here are friendly but there's a couple who seem to be annoyed at all times. Today I experienced a rude cashier who scanned my items and just threw them towards the bagging area. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with my family speaking Spanish since I can't think of anything we might've done to upset him. We stood around patiently waiting to pay as any other person does at the register. It was a tall older man who seemed to be around 50 with grey hair and black glasses, so look out in case he's your cashier, make sure to speak english so he doesn't mistreat you.

What a great Trader Joe's location! While getting my hair done in Santa Cruz, I decided to stop here on my way home to pick up a few items. And avoid the traffic on Highway 1 heading south. The first thing I noticed, huge wide open aisles. Like wow! It definitely makes the shopping experience more comfortable as we all try to maintain social distancing. The pandemic is NOT over, BTW, anyways, it is taken seriously here, as well at other Trader Joe's, and it is much appreciated. The parking lot is large and has plenty of spaces. I didn't spend too much time shopping here, I only came for a few items, which I quickly found, and peaced out! If you are in the Capitola area, need some items, I highly recommend this TJ's. Cheers and happy Yelping.

I love the sea based artwork at Trader Joe's.

I love Trader Joe's. They have reasonably priced, high quality goods. Yesterday when I went in to buy a few things, I returned a container of hand lotion. The dispenser had failed and I asked to get half my money back. The man who helped me told me to get a replacement bottle of hand lotion. I love their replacement plan, "try it and if you don't like it--get your money back". I also love that they have quality products, and they don't have too many choices. It keeps their stores smaller, and makes shopping easier (in my opinion).

Yum.

Each time I shop here, a cashier makes me smile! I love the free samples here: they're much better here than at other stores, truth be told.

I recently left a pretty scathing review of Capitola Produce Market near Gayles Bakery because the…read moreexperience there was genuinely disappointing. But right afterward we came to Sunnyside Produce and the difference was night and day. That contrast made me realize how important it is to give credit where it's due, especially after calling out bad service somewhere else. Sunnyside absolutely deserves praise. From the moment we walked in we were met with kind helpful people who were actually attentive and happy to assist. There was no attitude or indifference, just friendly efficient service. The team here clearly cares about what they do and about the customers walking through the door. The produce is fresh vibrant and well-organized, with a great mix of organic and local options that are thoughtfully stocked. Everything looked clean and cared for from the shelves to the displays, and it made shopping here feel relaxed and enjoyable. The prices are solid too, better than most other local places when you factor in the quality. It does not feel overpriced, and you actually leave with the sense that you got value for your money. What stood out the most to me is the atmosphere. This place has a soul. You are not just shopping, you are being welcomed. That is rare. After our visit I felt like this review needed to be written not just to balance out a negative one, but because Sunnyside Produce genuinely deserves recognition for doing things right. If you are looking for a place with real service, real food, and real people, this is it.

This place used to have a soul. Now, it feels like that soul has been stripped away and replaced with something superficial, tacky, and increasingly disconnected from the community it supposedly serves. What was once a grocery store with a purpose now feels more like the owner's personal vanity project. The focus seems less on providing good products at fair prices or serving the needs of local customers and more on creating an aesthetic that reflects the owner's personal tastes. There are no meaningful sales, the selection feels increasingly misguided, and the health and wellness section is being crowded out by unnecessary merchandise like wooden spoons and $200 tablecloths. It's hard to understand who this store is actually trying to serve anymore. The lack of staffing is another problem. Instead of having someone available at the register to help customers, there's a bell. That says a lot about the current state of the business. A neighborhood grocery store should feel welcoming and functional, not like an underfunded side project that customers are expected to accommodate. What makes the experience worse is the owner's personal commentary. On multiple occasions, I've been made uncomfortable by comments about my age and income. Customers come into a store to shop, not to have their personal circumstances scrutinized or to feel judged by the person running the business. That kind of behavior is inappropriate and does nothing to build customer loyalty. The biggest disappointment is the loss of what made this store matter to the community in the first place. A local business should offer value, care about its customers, and contribute something meaningful to the neighborhood. Instead, this store increasingly feels like an exercise in personal ego, with appearances taking priority over substance. Being a small business owner doesn't automatically make someone a good community member, and having a vision doesn't mean that vision serves anyone beyond the person who created it. It's sad to watch a once-meaningful local establishment lose its character under ownership that seems more invested in personal taste and image than in the customers and community that made the store worth having in the first place.
