Best Overall Trader Joe's in the Bay Area! This is absolutely one of my favorite Trader Joe's in the Bay Area, from the layout to customer service, freshness, quality and product placement it's all utterly fabulous and then best shopping experience you will have. Atmosphere and customer presence are far more pleasant and relaxed than other locations for the most part due to the leisure feel of the Capitola by the Sea. The population of customers are laid back surfers and retired elderly individuals, no panic, no stressful race through the aisles, you can browse and look at everything you please and really enjoy your trip to Trader Joe's.

What a great Trader Joe's location! While getting my hair done in Santa Cruz, I decided to stop here on my way home to pick up a few items. And avoid the traffic on Highway 1 heading south. The first thing I noticed, huge wide open aisles. Like wow! It definitely makes the shopping experience more comfortable as we all try to maintain social distancing. The pandemic is NOT over, BTW, anyways, it is taken seriously here, as well at other Trader Joe's, and it is much appreciated. The parking lot is large and has plenty of spaces. I didn't spend too much time shopping here, I only came for a few items, which I quickly found, and peaced out! If you are in the Capitola area, need some items, I highly recommend this TJ's. Cheers and happy Yelping.

I love the sea based artwork at Trader Joe's.

I love Trader Joe's. They have reasonably priced, high quality goods. Yesterday when I went in to buy a few things, I returned a container of hand lotion. The dispenser had failed and I asked to get half my money back. The man who helped me told me to get a replacement bottle of hand lotion. I love their replacement plan, "try it and if you don't like it--get your money back". I also love that they have quality products, and they don't have too many choices. It keeps their stores smaller, and makes shopping easier (in my opinion).

Yum.

Butcher Counter at 41st Location is a Problem: The rest of…read morethis Whole Foods is genuinely great, and the staff throughout the store are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the butcher counter is a serious weak spot -- both in quality and service. On the craft side, the butchering is sloppy. The NY strip steaks are being cut from the nerve end of the loin, which any skilled butcher knows should be repurposed rather than sold as premium full strips. The pork chops have the same problem -- end cuts with that ragged, uneven "cap" where the muscle narrows are being sold right alongside uniform center-cut chops, at the same price, with no distinction made. These aren't nitpicky complaints; they're basic standards that a full-service butcher counter should meet. With one notable exception (there's one guy there who's actually great - tall, Caucasian, ~30 YOM), the service ranges from indifferent to actively rude. Expect to be ignored before anyone acknowledges you. If you order half a pound of ground beef, they'll grab two-thirds of a pound and start wrapping without asking, then get an attitude if you point it out. Ask for two pork chops and you might get one that's half the size of the other. Request specific pieces from the case and you'll be treated like you're being difficult. The biggest issue for me: they wrap chicken directly in butcher paper without a plastic bag first. I learned this the hard way when chicken juice leaked all over my refrigerator overnight. That's not just sloppy -- it's a food safety problem. I want to support this store, and I genuinely enjoy shopping there. But the butcher counter's combination of poor technique and poor service means I won't shop here if I need to buy meat. It's a real shame.

The issues I mentioned before have noticeably improved, and overall the store now feels much better. Both staff and customers seem considerate of one another, which creates a calm and pleasant shopping environment. While there was one past incident that left a bad impression, I don't believe it represents this location as a whole. This has long been my go-to Safeway in the neighborhood, and this time I'm definitely giving it five stars.

However the day of the pick up I see the cake and it was a mess. It was nothing how I wanted it to be, the wrong color, spelled my name wrong, didn't even add any decorations. To top it off! the person working the counter the day of picking up the cake was heartless, maniac who could've cared less about my birthday who refused to help me at all. This was a terrible experience causing me to be very frustrated and upset, practically ruining my birthday. Never purchase a birthday cake from Safeway. Here you can see my reference photo vs. what they did, and my attempt to fix it with blue frosting that they told me to do myself.

This recent visit was disappointing enough that I feel it needs to be shared. Customer service was noticeably lacking. When we got to the front of the line and realized we forgot something, the woman at the register rolled her eyes and let out an audible sigh, even though no one else was in line. It felt unnecessarily rude. Throughout the store, employees were unhelpful and unapproachable. We tried to ask a question to a young tall man who clearly worked there, but he completely ignored us and just kept walking. Later, we asked a Hispanic man working in the back for help, and instead of answering, he gave us an annoyed look and walked away. It was uncomfortable and made us feel like we were a bother just for asking. To top it off, one of the two avocados we bought was completely rotten inside. The store itself didn't feel clean. Shelves had layers of dust, and we wandered around without a single person offering to help. Prices were shockingly high, especially considering the poor experience. Nob Hill is just down the road and offers better service, better prices, and a cleaner environment. I usually don't leave reviews unless something is exceptionally good or clearly disappointing. Unfortunately, this was the latter. I hope they get their act together, because this used to be a decent spot. But right now, I can't recommend it to anyone.

But right afterward we came to Sunnyside Produce and the difference was night and day. That contrast made me realize how important it is to give credit where it's due, especially after calling out bad service somewhere else. Sunnyside absolutely deserves praise. From the moment we walked in we were met with kind helpful people who were actually attentive and happy to assist. There was no attitude or indifference, just friendly efficient service. The team here clearly cares about what they do and about the customers walking through the door. The produce is fresh vibrant and well-organized, with a great mix of organic and local options that are thoughtfully stocked. Everything looked clean and cared for from the shelves to the displays, and it made shopping here feel relaxed and enjoyable. The prices are solid too, better than most other local places when you factor in the quality. It does not feel overpriced, and you actually leave with the sense that you got value for your money. What stood out the most to me is the atmosphere. This place has a soul. You are not just shopping, you are being welcomed. That is rare. After our visit I felt like this review needed to be written not just to balance out a negative one, but because Sunnyside Produce genuinely deserves recognition for doing things right. If you are looking for a place with real service, real food, and real people, this is it.
