The manufacturer, although local, did not offer repairs, only new sales since it was out of warranty. The owner of PPSF, came by and observed the unit. It was well over 15 years old, and I don't think it has worked since I bought the house a few years ago. He gave me two options. One option was the most cost effective and another higher option, but less than the water softener manufacturer was offering. I liked that he gave two options and allowed me to decide which route I wanted to go. I ended buying a unit from a local hardware store after scouring reviews and PPSF picked up and installed the unit. They also removed and disposed of the old unit. First company made a quick assessment and said we should replace at least the heating elements and maybe the thermostat too, just to be safe; this would have been $500-800.
