I have had my eye on this place for so long and was so excited to finally try a box of bao. Unfortunately, I confirmed that they do use dairy in the bao itself (milk and milk powder), as well as in many of the sweet options. I took the L and indulged in just one pork, salted duck egg, and sausage (#3) - but boy was it worth it! Maybe it's because I've essentially cut out dairy from my diet otherwise, but this bao was fragrant, tender, savory, and dare I say complex? The harmony of simple flavors shines through, especially the black pepper, which ties together the complementary saltiness of the meats, nutty umami of the egg, and herby allium notes from green onion. I was also glad that the fillings are cohesive, as a dumpling would be, rather than three ingredients floating in a bun, which I have also regretfully seen. But what impressed me the most was the bun itself, which was by no means an afterthought, as I find many steamed buns to be. There was just the right ratio of bun to filling, and the texture was so fluffy and melts in your mouth, leading way to a naturally sweet but not sugary or synthetic aroma (probably from that dairy component!). I hesitate to bemoan that these bao contain dairy because honestly I think that's what make them great. While a part of me still wishes they didn't contain dairy because I'd devour a box otherwise, I would still put these bao in the top 3 I've had. read more

Easy to warm up at home, either 30 sec in microwave or 8 min in steamer. #1 Pork Egg Sausage is solid, pork stands out as taste with sausage as some twang, very much a Vietnamese flavor rather than a Chinese pork seasoning. #5 Pork and Taro tastes similar due to pork but texture seems to have smaller ground pork and the taro is smooth and binds together, seems more cohesive, slightly sweeter due to taro. #8 Chicken Salted Duck Egg, tastes like normal egg, less umami than pork but still moist and a good option. #14 Durian Salted Egg custard is close to a typical Chinese salted egg dessert bao, only slight durian smell after cut open. #15 Taro is solid dessert, smooth paste and not too sweet. Got their 5 best different flavors, #2, #3, #7, #8 and #10. Glad Jenny labeled them on the container. She's very efficient and patient. All the banh bao I got are the best. The dough has the right texture and moist and the meat are flavorful. Even after reheating them in the microwave, the overall quality didn't change at all. Located in an unassuming strip mall one will find this Bao bakery. There are a variety of choices, pork, chicken, taro and veggie which are sold individually or in a box. My husband and I stopped at T.P. Banh Bao 2 in Garden Grove. We ordered the Banh Bao Thap Cam Trung Cut (#2 on their menu), it's a Vietnamese steamed bun with pork filling sausage, and quail egg, and oh my world--they were incredible! We love the ones with the quail egg--the small egg is just perfect for these baos. The breading was unbelievably fluffy and soft, and the filling was packed with flavor and super moist. We ordered four boxes, and each one came with nine perfectly sized banh baos. We knew right away we had to bring some back home to Sacramento. I was told they sell out early if you don't come in time, so it's best to go in the morning. If you get there early and order on the spot, the baos come warm and ready to eat. But since we had a long drive ahead, I asked if they had any cold ones we could store in a cooler. The lady at the front was so kind and helpful--she packed up cold ones for us and even gave us reheating tips. She said to pop one in the microwave for 40 seconds and they'd be good as new--and she was absolutely right! She also mentioned that if you keep the baos in the refrigerator, they're good for about a week. Once we got home, we froze them in freezer bags. Now whenever we want one, we just take a bag out of the freezer and defrost it. When we're craving a quick bite, we pop a bao in the microwave for 40 seconds and it comes out just like fresh. Even after being frozen for weeks, the baos still taste amazing--no sogginess, no loss of flavor, just pure deliciousness. And here's a fun tip: my husband saw my brother (who lives in Orange County) eat one with Sriracha, and wow--total game changer! It made the bao taste even better. So if you like Sriracha, don't knock it 'til you try it! We notice they have several locations and the closest one to us is in San Jose! Picked up some steamed buns last Saturday... #1 and as previously mentioned there is plenty of meat-to-bread ratio in these buns! 9 Buns for $13.00 and yes they charge tax if you use a card... but HEY they accept credit cards that is usually not the case in these places. Also, they had a wide variety of buns to choose from - both savory and sweet. Counter service was fine, though I detected a wee bit of a language barrier, which didn't affect the transaction, when she wasn't sure of something the Guy in the back would come up and answer or clarify for us. I still love coming here for banh bao. Although their prices have gone up, they still make a really good banh bao. I always get #1. Banh Bao Thap Cam - pork, egg, and sausage ($13/box of 9). The filling is tasty, the bun is slightly sweet, and the filling to bun ratio is on point! They are decently sized, not too big and not to small. They don't look like perfectly shaped buns, but they taste so good. The buns reheat well in the microwave so I always save some in the fridge to reheat for later. Stopped by this morning since I had a craving for Vietnamese-style steamed buns - definitely hit the right spot! First, parking still sucks here, I think it's gotten worse actually since my last post - the plaza has some changes including a Starbucks that was added at the corner. It's actually easier to park at the Office Depot lot and walk over, since their enter/exit driveways are wider and have less foot traffic. There's a variety of steamed buns here with both sweet and savory fillings - my go-to is the #1: Original pork, egg, and sausage - which as of today, goes for $13.00 for a box of 9, or $2.50 each. Prices are fair for the quality - sure, these are smaller than the banh baos you can get at say, THH down the street - but the quality is definitely noticeable and there is a higher filling-to-dough ratio. I used to peel the skin before eating steamed buns (was always told to as a kid) - but if you do that with these buns, you'll waste at least 1/5th of them considering the size. Service is prompt and courteous - cash recommended since there is a surcharge for card use. Overall, a favorite whenever I'm in the area and craving steamed buns. read more

They also have it in a deep fried version which is a total game changer. More affordable than many other places and it tastes better! I've purchased "higher quality" bao that was $5+ and they don't taste as good as the baos here. The bao is not too small and not too big. It's always a big hit at every pot luck and party. My sister lives out of town and she was so happy when I got her bánh bào from here. There are staff that speak English. Baos are decent size and it's a quick pick up! We got the one with the salted egg duck which was delicious but the egg itself was not salted enough? I still enjoyed them though. Don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices, it's really just a preference of type of egg at this point. We came in 10 minutes before closing and while worried, it was ok since we knew we wanted a box anyways and those are pre-made to pick up and you can go home and just heat them up yourselves. There wasn't any other customers in the shop when we arrived. As it was our first time here, we had some general questions about the pricing and mixing of the flavors. Most of our questions were answered by a nice lady with black hair but there was another lady (presumably the owner) with short brown hair that gave the MOST ATTITUDE and seemed very annoyed when we asked her some simple questions. When we were trying to get more information, she also made us calculate the price of the banh bao ourself. She rudely pointed to the menu and told us to do the math. Overall, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this place because of the bad service but also because of the cleanliness. I was in OC with my family and we happened to be in the area so we were searching on yelp to find a place that sells buns. So we ordered a few boxes of their buns, and 1 minutes later, the lady walked back from their kitchen and gave us the frozen ones. We were shocked because we expected buns to be steamy and warm. I have only been to the one on Euclid, next to Da Lat market. I usually don't like banh bao, but ever since I discovered this place, I'm in love with them! They have many different fillings to choose from or you can have them deep fried (I think 50 cents extra for each bun). It is a must try if you have never had deep fried buns. I have tried both the steamed buns and the deep fried buns, as well as the different fillings here such as the seafood, custard, combination with salted egg, BBQ pork, but my favorite is the combination with chicken egg (#1 on the menu and most popular). The filling is ground pork, onion, mushroom, chicken egg, and chinese sausage. They are $10 for a box of 9 buns, super affordable! The bun is the perfect size. The dough is soft, fluffy, slightly sweet, and the filling is moist and flavorful. They still taste great after a few days in the fridge. Small to go shop. Will not go here again. Today went in to buy 2 boxes of bao for $37. Cashier took my credit card to charge while waking away, briefly saying there's 8% charge for credit card usage bring total to some $40. I was in the process questing about the charge a this has never been charge in the past. I then said, I don't want to purchase anymore. She said I already charge the card. She can easily refund but implied it's done. I said oh ok I will not return. She didn't seem to care. The issue is that there was no sign about the credit card usage fee. It's just not honest business. For this, we will not return. There are plenty of bao shop out there that doesn't charge extra. read more
