This was my first experience with Tot's Tailoring. I took 4 dresses in to be fitted. They were so kind and understood exactly what I wanted my dresses to look like. The owner is positive and has a can-do attitude, compared to other alterations places I've been to. My dresses took a bit longer to alter but it was worth it because each one fit exactly like I wanted to. They even offered to fix my husbands brand new oxford that had ruined at another alterations shop. Great people and great work! read more

I needed a suit jacket altered that required taking in the back and removing a lot of the shoulder pads out and a few other things and she finished it up within a week and a half and it looks perfect. It was exactly what I needed and wasn't expensive to have done. I was pretty amazed when I walked in and put the jacket on and she knew exactly what I wanted without me having to say anything. Upon recommendation from another bride (and trusting Flip, where Toy is located some of the time) I trusted Toy with alterations to my wedding dress. I have heard nothing but great reviews about everything else she does and since she did quality bridal work for a friend, I felt good about my decision. It pains me to write this review, because Toy really does seem like a nice lady. When I brought the dress in, I tried it on and she marked it up for alterations. She looked it over for a while and told my mom and I that alterations should be no more than $300. It was a very pleasant experience and she was very kind. The morning of the first fitting I had scheduled, (after first round of alterations) she called to ask if we could reschedule for the day after because of an emergency (which she later explained to be an employee that walked out). The fitting was important because my mother in law was in town specifically to see the dress. Toy did get us in that afternoon, which we were thankful for, but it didn't make a great impression. She called to reschedule the second fitting. And when I showed up for the third fitting, she wasn't in her shop (was told to come back in 30 minutes). When I left that fitting, we had agreed that she'd have the hem adjusted, cups sewn in, and a bustle added by the next time I came in. When I arrived for the final fitting, she had not sewn in the cups nor done the bustle. I tried it on for length and felt that it was too short. She assured me it wasn't and asked that I come back in 45 minutes so that she could do the bustle and re-hum some of the inside layers that appeared uneven. Before I left, I asked her to give me the price for alterations so I could write a check while I was gone. She said the cost would be $350. I left feeling flustered and disappointed. When I returned to pick up the dress, I asked for an invoice detailing the work done and the cost for each service to justify the expenses above what I was quoted. She became flustered, agreed to charge me $300 and then spent several minutes hand-writing an invoice and trying to figure out what discount to use to get from the $350 + tax charge down to $300. She didn't argue about lowering the price, but it was uncomfortable watching her try to do the calculations. When I got home, I gave the dress a thorough examination. I wish I had done that in her presence, because I was very disappointed in the quality of the work done on the inside layers (still uneven, choppy, and very poorly done). On top of that, I realized that she had hemmed (trimmed with scissors) the lace top-layer which left uneven, unravelled edges that dipped below the other hem. I did not confront her about it because I felt the damage was already done, but I was very disappointed. I wish that she had called to ask about cutting the lace before she had done it because that's so irreversible. Thankfully, after cleaning, the lace laid flat around the hem and only those who knew what had happened noticed that something was "off" about the dress. At my last fitting, I noticed a sign on the door saying she wouldn't be taking anything new for a few weeks. In hindsight, I think she was really busy and rushed through the job. She may do great work on jeans, shirts, suits, etc., but I would recommend taking a wedding dress to someone who specializes in that type of work. Worth the $$ to know "THE dress" is in the right hands. read more

It pains me to write this, because Toy is such a sweet lady. BUT... I dropped 11 business/business casual skirts off to be tailored/taken in a size at Flip, which is a consignment shop in town. The items that are more than a hem on a pair of pants, from best I can tell, go out to Toy in Brentwood. When I dropped them off at Flip they couldn't tell me the prices. They said they'd have to check with Toy. It was October 31 and they said they would have them to me November 12. Seemed a little long, but it was 11 skirts. I also said I wanted confirmation on the pricing before they worked on them. By November 11 I hadn't heard a peep. I called Toy and she said they hadn't touched them yet but that she would do each skirt for $15. Normally some can run $25. Fine. She also said she'd still have them done by November 12. On November 12 she called and said she'd need one more day. Fine. I went on November 13 to pick them up in Brentwood and she had THREE of the 11 done. She wanted to see some of them on me to assure the pockets would lay right, etc. Fine. It was Friday afternoon so she asked if I could come Monday. On Monday she called and said it would be Tuesday. WOW. On Tuesday I didn't hear from her so I assumed they were done. I walked in and she said an emergency had come up and a gentleman needed a shirt hemmed before leaving for a business trip tomorrow...a gentleman who obviously is more important than me. And with more money. I finally pick up the skirts on November 18 -- 6 days later than promised and 19 days after dropping them off. One has obvious flaws, one seam is crooked so the decorative buttons on the front of the skirt are now off to the side. She charged me $150 -- so about $13 and some change per skirt. Ridiculous. Moral of the story -- if you have lots of money to spend on an alteration and pay her rush fee, I guarantee you'll move to the top of the pile. I just can't guarantee it'll be done well. read more

When a big interview came up with only a Holiday weekend before getting on a plane, I was so glad to find Toy's Tailoring located in the same building as Mazatlan in Brentwood. Just needed something minor, but that can be a big deal when most tailors/seamstresses usually say, "be ready a week from tomorrow." Yikes. She was open on a Sunday to take a call that she would be there on Monday, which was Labor Day I believe. She made the alteration in an hour while I ran an errand. She's been my go-to for 3 years, and happy to have found her in 2 locations. Brentwood - where you can eat, shop, bank, etc. because the location is so close to everything. (Even though, she often says 15 minutes, and I could just wait.) And 1100 8th Ave S, in Flip consignment store - much closer to my Downtown home I've never needed any intricate work done there; but I feel confident she could do it. The only reason I didn't give a 5 is that I took in some things on a Tuesday and Toy wasn't there, but someone else was there to take at least take the items and she said "a week from tomorrow?" Because the 5 things were needed, I asked if she was ok and if there was a reason I couldn't get them the next day. She said no problem and I asked if I should call before coming, she said no, they will be ready. Gave an extra day, and was disappointed when there was a note on the door on Thursday saying she was closed for 4 hours. Perhaps I should have called, but I'd never needed to before. A sincere apology was given and Certainly won't allow one instance of quite possibly an emergency or miscommunication to keep me from Toy's Tailoring. She is always smiling, always appreciative of the business, affordable and 99% time same-day (same-hour, really), which is very hard to come by. read more

Toy is so nice there's no doubt about that and does great work, But.. I've been to her twice now to have a couple rips sewn up, on some ann taylor pants. I dropped off on 9/6/18 and was told they would be ready on 9/13/18. I called on 9/12/18 just to check in, she couldn't find my pants.... umm. showed up on 9/13/18 after work to see what the deal was. My pants were there but haven't even been touched. :( there's just no sense of urgency. Sadly, I'm going to have to find a tailor that works a little more efficiently. read more

I took a pair of dress pants to get altered and she did an amazing job. She got them fitted perfectly, the turnover time was great and she was very friendly! It is a little harder to find as you need to go to the second level of the building but don't let that detour you. Please check them out if you need something altered! read more

I took several expensive J. Crew dresses to be altered since I lost weight. Toy watched over her assistant as she did the measurements. I was very specific in how I wanted the dresses taken in and hemmed. My total was $134 for 4 dresses, which I found a pricey considering 2 were to just be hemmed, but she charged double for them because they were lined. When I picked them up, I didn't inspect them or try them on because I was in a hurry. BIG MISTAKE! 2 of the silk dresses were hemmed way too short! I am tall, but she measured them on me and I specifically said just above the knee. One was too small after I specifically told here not to take it in too much. And my fluttered sleeves? Cheaply folded over and stiched with threads hanging off! Appalling! Also, the work was TERRIBLE!!!! The hemlines were CROOKED!!!! It looked like a home ec project, the stitching didn't even line up! I did go back and they refunded my money, but the dress that are too short are ruined! I should have charged them the price of the silk J. Crew dresses, too! NOT RECOMMENDED read more

I have been going to Toy for many years and this is an updated review. It's in someways hurts my heart to leave a negative review for her because she's a nice person but I left today extremely frustrated. And today's frustration is not isolated. I feel like I've been leaving very frustrated on and off for about the last year. First, the time it takes for the work to actually get completed is unacceptable. The promise date is the date that I should call and then she will give me another date, and I will call on my way, and she will give me another date. We have even had circumstances where it was promised it will be done, you don't need to call, and I show up, after making the 30 minute trip from my house, to find out that it is not completed. Completely unacceptable. This is been pretty consistent, every time for about the last year and a half. And I probably have something altered more than six times a year. I feel like the quality of work and the level of communication has also changed. I often find when I get home that there are some things that are a little crooked/incomplete. Are they incomplete enough to call and have her fix it? Often times no because we should all pick our battles. But sometimes when I do say something I feel like whatever is wrong is somehow my fault? I end up feeling that it was wrong either because: I'm crooked, what I am wanting is not possible/too difficult or contradictory to something I previously said. I sew as well and most of the time as she is telling me something is impossible, I know that it IS so long as you are willing to PUT IN THE EFFORT and use your brain. I'm not sure if it is a language barrier but my gut is that she is super busy and rather than giving you what you want--she would rather talk you out of WANTING what you want. Or let u know how hard it will be...how dare you pay a lot of money and want it to fit the way you intended. I used to feel like she was really paying attention to the details and generally got it right. I almost never asked her to fix anything. I think right now she is just trying to get the work completed and her willingness to actually give the customer specifically what they asked for has changed. read more

I've been going to Toy for a few years now and she's always done a great job. You have to have Toy measure you as well as do the work. I've had her one of her employees hem my pants once and it wasn't what I had asked for so I had to bring it back and have it fixed but no big deal. If you're reading Yelp reviews about a tailor then there are two assumptions that we can probably make. 1 - you have style. 2 - You don't have a lot of money. Good. Toy is easily the best tailoring you can get for the price. I have tailored a Tuxedo, several interview suits, Dress shirts, pants and I'm getting a Waterproof jacket's zipper replaced this week. I refuse to go anywhere else. I agree with those that suggest making sure Toy does the "marking up" - as she'll converse with you about what will and won't look good. but the reality is that tailoring is more like barbering or bar tending than other fields - you want your tailor to know you. Most of her staff will be "new" to you - and may have no idea what you like. This should be resolved as soon as you go in to pick up your first tailored piece. (So I recommend budgeting a bit of time before the actual event if this is your first tailored garment). DO be picky - you're paying money after all, let them know if something doesn't move correctly, or if you find that the garment makes you look awkward. DON'T expect the unattainable. I walked in behind a guy who was mad that Toy (the tailor) wouldn't go out and match fabric for a pair of pants that he wanted "expanded' from a 32 to a 36. After you work with Toy, you may just realize how much fit plays into the quality of a garment. I seldom buy "fancy" suits any more - rather, i'll Ebay a piece that I saw in another store, and get that bad boy fitted to my frame. The result is spectacular - for a reasonable price. read more

I NEED A RECO FOR A NEW TAILOR. Completely unprofessional. I dropped off a bridesmaid's dress to get taken in and hemmed and 2 other cotton maxi dresses to get hemmed. The bridesmaid's dress needed structural changes and hemming to multiple layers, so fine - complex job. The other 2 should've been pretty straight forward hem jobs. 3 wks and $195 later ($30 per hem job, $135 for the dress), I came back after work on the day they were promised to be ready and she's not done. She tells me to come back in a couple hours, I come back THREE hours later and they're still not done. By this point, I'm a bit irritated. My time is tight during the week with work, young kids, etc. I can't just hang around the shop waiting. Clearly stressed, she tells me in an annoyed manner that I'm not the only one waiting on items and they're very busy at the moment. I told her for the amount of money I spent and for having 3 weeks, I would expect the job to be done. If that was not possible she NEVER SHOULD HAVE ACCEPTED MY BUSINESS. I could then hear her in the other room angrily speaking to her employees in her native language, presumably irritated with me. Completely unprofessional behavior when someone is so clearly in the wrong. Probably the worst part of this whole thing is that my bridesmaid dress cost $350, the alteration Toy charged on it was $135. When I tried it on, the straps no longer sat right on my shoulders (they're loose and falling down). This is the kind of sh*t that happens when someone does a rush job that starts the day of scheduled pick up. She said she didn't do straps, which is a complete lie because she did on a different bridesmaid's dress she did for me back in December. Her abrupt response was clear indication that she doesn't care to take responsibility for her failures. Final verdict - I'm done here. read more

Buyers Beware! This establishment tells you one price on the phone, then when you bring in the item, they switch the price they quoted, to a higher price. This is the second time they have done this. I will not return to a business that deceives thier customers. read more

I wouldn't think twice about recommending someone to Toy's. I have to say that when it comes to my suits I like them to be fitted to a very specific way. I told her what I wanted and how I wanted it and she met every expectation. I even took back some of my old suits to have tailored again. I am a huge fan of Huge Boss Dress shirts But even their fitted shirts aren't fitted I explained to toy what I wanted and again she went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable even if it took a little longer for her to make sure that I tired one on first to make sure I was content before doing the others. I will be back as long as I am in the area. read more

Not impressed. I won't be back to this place. Had some items altered through Flip Consignment in Nashville and there's a 10 day waiting period... Because Toy isn't actually in the building. They ship everything over to her Brentwood store and the women who take measurements are not the ones doing the actual sewing. This developed problems for me as my garment was done incorrectly and and another sloppily and I asked them to redo and I was on a deadline. I was told I might go to the Brentwood location to get it done faster and Toy typically "prefers women to go to that store" so she can measure them herself... Like, what?? I already CAME to Toy's Tailoring. There's a sign right there in Flip. You should be HERE, and if you can't be, hire someone onsite who knows what they are doing. The hem of my jeans was unevenly done as well and there was an oily stain on my brand new dress I got altered upon pickup. Prices were reasonable but the experience soured it for me. read more

Based on the great reviews on this site and others, I took my husbands tuxedo pants in for alterations for our son's wedding. 10 days later they called asking for more time which we gave them. When we arrived several days after the agreed upon date the pants were nowhere to be found and turns out they had not even started on them yet. Promised the next day and in fact they were there the next day. Quality of alterations - average - some seams did not match up perfectly but thankfully it will be covered up by the cummerbund. She did not bother to press them to get rid of the creases from the alterations and she also had removed half of a hook and eye and a button which did not need to be removed for the alterations in question and then did not put them back on. Leaving me, just days before the wedding, to go all over town to find an eye that would fit the hook and a button which I did not have an extra of and sew them back on as well as do a better pressing job myself. She really put un-necessary pressure on us by not doing a quality and timely alterations job on a relatively simple fix. I wish I had done it myself but I was trying to avoid extra stress and thought this would be one thing I could take off my plate. read more
