First off, I want to say the selection is fantastic, and the individual I worked with was knowledgeable, and pretty friendly. The store was a disaster though, I understand that the space is small, but not only is it a bit of a mess, but it's also rather cluttered. Combine those factors with the shelves far too close together (both an accessibility and fire hazard), and you get a rather unpleasant time shopping. I've been going here for a while and Its been a very welcoming environment with a great community. The owner is understanding and polite, and he has a great selection of cards, miniatures, and games for good prices. I've always come in and been able to play whatever I want or buy whatever I want with little to no issue. Whenever I am there he's always polite to whom ever walks in and will answer all their questions to the best of his ability. For example last Saturday a boy and his dad came in asking about Warhammer 40K and he answered them and showed them a set that might work for what he wanted, but before they spent any money he recommended that he do research and come in the next day to watch some more experienced players. I called to see if they had the new Magic: The Gathering Fat Pack Bundles (Streets of New Capenna) to sell early with prerelease because some sets can be sold early. The man who answered the phone was very rude and you can tell his weakness is customer service and it was overall a horrible first impression. Mostly focused on being a game space for Collectable Card and Miniature games this small store is run by a husband and wife team who clearly love gaming but lack any form of finesse or people skills. We went to a Magic drafting night which was billed as a casual game night where "players keep what cards they draft". Once we where there they had a vote to change to format of the game to one where the winners get to draft and keep the most significant rares. We voted to keep the format to the one which was advertised but were outvoted by very experienced players who ultimately picked a format that greatly benefits the more experienced. We should have left then. We then proceeded to get our clocks cleaned by a group, that we later learned, included at least one professional player. When the store owner asked if we had fun, we voiced that indeed we did not, that the format was really unfriendly to new players, and the night really didn't go as billed (it's advertised that everyone wins at least one booster, which was NOT the case). Even though the store owner was aware that it went poorly and we had a miserable time, he really didn't do anything about it. Lots of options to help make the night right. I recognize that a store can't completely control what happens at its events, but a small store like this could have been a lot more accommodating to new players, especially since they billed the night as one to appeal to them. Once the issue was voiced they could have easily remedied things, but again they didn't seem all that interested. Even one booster pack to my son to say "sorry that you had such a miserable time and that we changed the game on you" would have gone a long way. But the store owners really didn't seem empathetic to our experience. Ultimately, my 12 year old son got fleeced. Because of the format a $15+ card which he got in his booster pack went to a guy who competes professionally. How is that not gambling? By staking rares worth money you create a financial pot which the winner gets, I don't think that's even legit (or sanctioned by Wizards of The West Coast) It all was pretty shameless. Harrison Comics in Salem isn't all that far away and they've always been really great on the comic side of things. We will be taking our business there in the future. read more

The guy there definetly knew ALOT about the boardgames he played and sold. He was very happy to answer all of my questions and we chatted about D&D for a solid 10 minutes at least. This is a place i would go to for any of my other boardgames needs and also to play there with all the others that play there! They play D&D, Magic the gathering, Star Wars boardgames, Cardfight Vanguard!, and a couple more! I got what i needed and he also gave me a little discount, so i am VERY happy with this boardgame shop! read more

I've had a very good experience at Toys n Things. It's a local hobby store with a community. Evan has always been really good about special ordering for me and following through. He offers a 10% discount if you follow him on Facebook for many items in store. He does have tables for Warhammer/War Machine/40K if you wanted to get together with some friends to play. Magic usually dominates the store during the week, but that's because Magic dominates the hobby community across much of the country. If he doesn't have something, he'll find it for you and he'll always be honest about it. The other great part is his Role playing community and the opportunity to "escape reality" for a little while (as Evan says). I've been playing in one session for a few years and we get to play in a very collaborative environment with unlimited possibility. These role playing sessions go on various times during the week. Check them out for a great, wholesome time. As this is store is community based there is a mixed bag of people who come here. Some older, some young. The more you go to events, the more effort Evan will put into the segment of business. A good local store with a community based environment; I'll be a customer for many years to come. read more

I drive 50 minutes once a week to play cards here. I Love the shop and the people that show up to play. Its a little small and sometimes there are a few events going on. It can be a little overwhelming at time. Owner is friendly and very responsive to questions and complaints. read more

I placed a pre-order with Toys N Things for a role-playing game. When it was finally released, it never arrived. After several months of waiting, I cancelled the order. Toys N Things had "problems with their PayPal system" and never refunded my money. read more

First off I must say that I am an avid customer of this store. I am there at least twice a week, always enjoying my time due to the great atmosphere of the store. As with any business there are always a few bugs to work out of the system but overall this store is second to none in the area for a gathering area of social gamers. Pros: 1. Atmosphere. Like I said previously this store is the perfect place to go to and instantly make friends. Everyone is friendly and most of the players will go out of their way to help you learn or become better at what you're interested in. The Magic community at Toys N Things is becoming one of the most brilliant I have ever been a part of. 2. Owners. The owner of this store Evan is a gamer at heart, and a store that runs off gaming needs this. He is more than willing to bend and flex to get what you need. Personally, I have had nothing but great experiences with Evan and hope to have more in the future. 3. Hours. A gaming store that will actually stay open past 9pm in this area is almost unheard of. The last store I used to frequent would try to hold a tournament starting between 5-6 and then expect us to be done and out by 9pm. 4. Tournaments/Prizes Structure. Want to draft on a Tuesday night, just show up and 9 times out of 10 you'll find the people there willing to sling. Prizes are paid out accordingly to placement and the amount of players. Evan is also always open to suggestion about ways to maximize the happiness of all participants. Cons: 1. Cleanliness. Sometimes the store can be a little dirty from time to time, due to the fact that a lot of the people that frequent the store are slobs. Most of the problem could be remedied by people picking up there own trash, placing there backpacks or War-hammer bags in a neat fashion instead of throwing them on a table, or just caring a little bit about what is not theirs. The bathroom can be dirty at times, but that happens when you have the volume of customers that this store can pull in. 2. Space. When the store first started the store was a perfect size for what was needed. Now that it is becoming a hub for the North Shore Magic community it is getting smaller by the week. I understand that expansion is based on profit, and that it may not be a possibility in the immediate future, but this store could use a bigger area especially with the hopes that this store will be running high end events since it is now an Advanced store for WotC. A bigger gaming area and show space would in theory provide a huge boost for this stores community and profit. 3. Temperature. It can get really hot when the store is full of people. Evan has put the effort forth to fix this with a second AC unit, but even so it can easily get to the uppers 80's in the store during a Friday Night Magic session. 4. Card Selection. This is more a Magic player based criticism. Since the store has recently become a hot spot for MtG, there back collection is very lacking. If you are looking for older staples for Legacy, Extended, or Vintage you may not find it here. But on the other hand the stores current collection for the Standard format is the complete opposite, they will have almost anything you need! Again the back collection will take time and effort but I see them eventually collecting all MtG staples as time passes! Overall, I love this store. A great place to spend your free time gaming and hanging out with friends. But for any store to become better there always has to be criticism, but don't let that stop you from coming to Toys N Things! read more

OK, so I know this is going to lead to a response from the owner, and that it won't be seen because they show 1 review on the yelp page, but it needs to be said. 1. If your child is going to be in your store, he needs to be fully clothed.....at ALL times. I understand it is difficult to look after a child while running a business, but that is not your customers fault. It is disgusting to see a child running around in a diaper, annoying customers. 2. The shop is a complete and total mess. When you step in, the first thing you notice is that it is not well lit, not very organized, and the place just looks gross. I've been to friend's basements that looked better, and while I understand it was left to the owner in rough shape, there is no excuse for not investing in a new carpet or removing the carpet and going hardwood floor! Take pride in your store! It is worth noting that they have an extensive collection of MTG and the owner is always willing to include newbies into whatever game he is playing. That part I have no problem with. You are good at customer relations, in-store. For that you receive these 2 stars. But that does not excuse you from having a store that is in such disrepair that I cannot, in good faith, recommend that people go in that store. If you're in Danvers, either Harrison's in Salem or Myriad Games on NH border are 25min away, better kept, and just as affordable and friendly. read more

I went there with a few trading cards that I was trying to sell. The guy looked at them and chose the ones he needed than asked me if I wanted cash or credit. I told him cash and turns out he had no money in the cash register (which was strange) .. I told him alright and he asked me if i wanted store credit and I said no. He told me to come back next week because that's when he would have money. I went twice the following week and he still had "no cash". I'm not sure if he really didn't have the money or if he was just lying to me. I find it hard to believe he doesn't have the money considering he owns a store... I never got the money and I gave up. I never write reviews, but this one is long overdue. I know Evan (the owner) will comment on this and I know that he will push whatever electronic weight he can to ensure my voice will not be heard, but I've endured this abuse for long enough to know what I'm talking about. I had been going to TnT for years now for the convenient location and it has finally dawned on me that this place does not deserve your money. If you want a place to play Dungeons and Dragons, I guess you could do worse. Go role play at TnT, spend next to zero dollars and hang out for hours. On the other hand, for those who play Magic, stay away from this store. There is no upside to playing here except for maybe taking advantage of newer players (the majority of the current play group). Now I know that's enticing, but it's not worth it. And here's my reasons why: The place is absolutely filthy. There's food and beverage infused in every crevice of a dank commercial carpet that should be ripped up and burned. Crumbs secretly hide on the play mats and Warhammer tables. The owner's child romps around as he pleases throughout the day, even during midnight prereleases where the child ends up sleeping under a Warhammer table. The owner's lack of knowledge about the game of Magic is astounding. He just sits at his computer playing games (I think Civ 5) while the players run the event. He knows nothing about magic finance or the what decks are actually played in each format, but, before you decide to go buy cards that spiked, know that he doesn't trust anybody, will probably check the price online anyway (even if it's a bulk rare), and then get mad for trying to cheat him (when he should just know what prices are). His prereleases used to pay out well where there was a cutoff to prizing and those that did well were rewarded. I just got out of the latest even ending with an impressive record of 4-1 in a tournament of about 30, in which I was "rewarded" 2 packs. That's an insult to my success and to anyone who actually would pay money for a tournament. He says it's to encourage a casual environment and so everyone gets something, well I got one pack more than last place and last time I checked I wasn't in Little League. Here's another thing that's been prevalent of late: he almost never has product. There has been multiple times that I had gone in to draft and there was either not enough or no draft packs at all. He hasn't had dragon shield sleeves or ultra pro binders in about a year and makes excuses when asked about them. He barely stocks Ultra Pro sleeves and deck boxes too. His case has barely anything of reasonable value, and even when it does, it's unorganized and unprofessional. They're too cheap to put new lights so you can even see the cards. The binders are unsorted and unlabeled, a free-for-all when looking for cards (and don't expect all sets to be accounted for, or even a substantial amount for older sets). The owner doesn't focus on the cards or the players, so I don't really know what he focuses on or how he's still in business. I like some of the guys that I played Magic with there, but the only reason I was there was because it's the only place close, it stays open as long as you want it too, and I wanted to see my friends. An empty building would do a better job taking care of customers than the owner though. I have officially vowed to never go back to this store. There are better stores worth the extra milage on my car than to deal with the owner and the shenanigans that surround him and his store. I hope those reading this found it helpful. read more

Toys N Things privides the North Shore area with a long overdue, sorely needed center for the gaming community. There are a few other stores in the area which sell games and some even run organized play events, but Toys n Things is the only one that deserves to call itself a gaming store. read more

Not a very professional place from my experience, I first walked in and I could immediately tell that they had an event the night before, probably a tabletop tournament but it looked like a rave had just let out. The woman there was nice, but was not very helpful. She seemed very busy, so I'd give it a bad timing over not caring. The second time I went there was pretty much the same, the place was a mess, and added to that was an odd smell, like old beer. Also the guy on staff was not so helpful either. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I'm a gamer I love magic the gathering and play every Friday. My usual store witch I play Friday night magic wasn't holding a pre - release so I came here. Right away there was a woman working there and you could tell she hated her job. She was very rude and I quote "move you nerds get out of my way!" So not only are the employees rude but I was cheated out of my prize. The marked Me Down as loosing and I won every game, so instead of getting my 20 packs of magic cards = $80 I got 2 yup 8 dollars worth of cards. They said there was nothing they could do witch was a li because I found our they could of changed the outcome. Oh and the people who won where the judge's friends. This is not even it all. So after this I called the owner the next day and he said so sorry trying to make amends. He said he was sending me out a fee pack to make up for it. That's was almost 2 month ago and he still hasn't sent it. So not only is the store full of cheaters and liars but the owner never backed up his promise to me. Never will I return there and for parents don't let your children get ripped off and cheated. In the 12 years I've been playing magic never have I been treated with such disrespect. Terrible service. Twice I preordered limited release Magic the Gathering cards from here, and twice he sold it before I could pick it up. The first time, a box of Modern Masters 2015, it took over a month of consistent phone calls before it was shipped. The second time, a box of Eternal Masters, the product never came at all. It then took multiple contact attempts before the refund was processed and I was lied to repeatedly about the status of my orders/refunds on both occasions. He sells his product cheaper than other places, but I advise against doing business here for any reason. It's not worth the risk of not being able to get your product. read more

Not a huge fan of this establishment. I used to spend alot of time here but have decided to look elsewhere to game. The store is much too small to run large magic, warhammer, and D&D events (forced to play in a pizza shop a few doors down during a magic tournament). Barely enough space to move around during even small events. The room is overall very stuffy, the tabletops and floors are always cluttered with trash. The counter space is always cluttered. Overall very unprofessional. Additionally there is a little child who is always wandering around unattended grabbing cards, models, books, screaming, and being scolded by the mother. However their staff Gordon, Andrew, Benzo, Nic, and Zack know what they are talking about and are very helpful in all aspects. Definately alot of potential here but need alot of work. read more
