they did 2 difficult jacket for me one was a filson the other a carhart. Both these jackets were tough materials and triple stitched. they did an amazing job ! I can not even tell the jackets had been altered other than they fit awesome now . was it cheap ? Nope ! Was it excellent work Yes ! ......well worth the price .....I will be taking more stuff to them in the future . very pleasant to deal with and very friendly ! they care about the work they do . I used Townline Tailors to have a bridesmaid dress altered. It was ordered on-line with the provision of my measurements, and I feel that even Pamela Anderson would have to have the chest taken in. Yikes. Townline is easy to find and access from downtown. The shop is lined with fabric available to make custom dress-shirts and suits. There is a full, large changing room and while pinning is done in the middle of the shop, it was quiet both times I was in and so it wasn't awkward or tricky to get around people. The dress I brought in required some serious reconstruction and after it was all pinned, I was told two weeks and $75. Perfect! I got a call a couple of days before it was supposed to be done to come in and try it on again. There were still a couple of adjustments that needed to be made and come the due date, it was all ready to go! The dress looked like new and fit me much better. They honoured the original quoted price and only charged $75, despite it clearly taking hours of work. I definitely encountered some catty people during my experiences in the store, which was sad as they're quite a lovely staff. In being in the seamstress world, I definitely understand and appreciate their graciousness, especially when dealing with these treats. read more

I bought a new suit and the pants needed some tailoring; taken in at waist, hemmed and slimming of the legs. When I went to pick them up another came up and they took care of that for no extra charge AND they did it in 2 hours as I needed the pants back asap. If I could give these people six stars, I would. I had a Jean button pop on my oldest favorite jeans. They happened to be around the corner (found through yelp). They fixed it right then, with a better, cooler button than was there before. Total time with a broken button was less than five minutes. $7.50. read more

This tailor shop is kind of hidden as you walk down Howe street, but it is a very good place! Me being on the short side, I decided to get a pair of my favourite pants professionally tailored. I went here to get a pair of jeans and sweatpants hemmed, and was very happy with the result. The work is done with care and the service is very friendly, calm and professional, and I felt confident leaving my clothing there. It is a small business, with what I believe are two associate responsible for the work. They mostly do suit and pant alterations. My hemming was finished very quickly, within two days, which works well for me since I don't live downtown. My jean hem cost 15$ and the sweatpants, since they needed more stitching, cost 22$, but it was well worth it. I would happily come again in the future. read more

I visited Townline Tailors to hem several pairs of jeans. Being on the short side, I always need to have them shortened and prefer to keep the original hem (sometimes called a European hem). Fortunately, this tailor can keep the original jean hem so that you can't even tell they been tailored. The work was perfectly done and on time. The shop is easy to miss while walking down Howe but is worth seeking out. It's a small shop and seems to be run by a friendly family. I will definitely use them again. read more

I had my jeans hemmed. When I went to pick up the jeans the next day, I also brought in a coat with loose straps. The owner fixed the coat in 2 minutes for free saying it was an easy fix. I was in a panic and a bind when I realized that the gala dress that I needed to wear the following day for an event, was too long. I contacted Townline Tailors at around 9pm to see if they might be able to accommodate me the next day for a rush and much to my surprise I received a very quick reply after hours! I had bought some suits at Moore's, and took them to their in-house alterationist to have them taken in, so they had more of a modern fit. When the alterationist at Moore's took my jacket in twice, he completely ruined the alignment of the vents, and the jacket still didn't fit close to how I wanted it to fit. After he suggested I close to vents to clean up the sides of the jacket, I decided to seek another opinion. Closing the vents cannot be reversed, and is pretty extreme. I brought the jacket to Townline TAILORS, right away the owner said "Who destroyed this jacket? What a terrible job". He marked me up and pinned the sides, I told him I wanted a modern fit, and showed him a photo. He responded: "I'll make you look like a movie star". My jacket was ready in one week, he brought it out, and I tried it on... It was incredible, it looked like it was Made-to-Measure. Before the Tailor @ Townline worked on the jacket, there were these ugly, wrinkled lines all over the back and sides from the alterationist's attempts to take the jacket in. Somehow, this Tailor at Townline was able to smooth everything out, the jacket looked brand new! I told him what I wanted the jacket to look like, and he delivered on the first try. I was not expecting it to come out this good, so going forward I am bringing everything for them to alter for me. Also, I now look like a movie star. read more

These guys are top notch. Had a suit altered there as well as a cashmere overcoat deconstructed/reconstructed to take it down from a 42R to 40R. I wouldn't trust too many shops to do this and the finished product was perfect. Customer service was the way it should be especially when the tailor shook my hand and said "Thank you for your business, it is appreciated". Went today to get a button sewed onto my jacket after the tailor closest to my house forgot to fix it when I got my it dry cleaned. Mark was amazing and fixed it right away as he knew I was in a hurry. In the past, Townline has done an amazing job with a complicated zipper replacement and actually provided a more mobile/desirable zipper, yet identical looking to the original. I really like the staff at this place, they are so full of european character! And history, the gentleman that owns this place has owned it for something like 50 years, a true Vancouver landmark - love that. Would go here just to support this local family but alas the alterations are great too. Have never experienced the cigarette smoke "JC M" refers to on any of the times I have been there. I took a few items here for different alterations and have been very happy with almost all of them. My only disappointment (minus one star) was for the hem on my jeans, I asked for European hem (keep the original hem) which they did but they attached it to the outside so after a month or two of washing the fact that it is sewn onto the outside of the jeans becomes visible (probably to me only, I don't think anyone else would notice). In the past I have had tailors attach the hem to the inside and I never noticed that it had been hemmed again. Oh well, will find another place for the jeans but everything else is coming here! read more

Good work, but poor service. They did a difficult alteration to a jacket of mine. When I came back at the agreed upon day they had forgotten to do it. I came back the following week and asked for a discount for my trouble, a reasonable request considering it was a $100 alteration. The grey haired woman I dealt with very rudely said "No!" I said, "In that case I may not come back," to which she replied "We don't need you... We have lots of customers and don't need you." I won't be going back. read more

I haven't used my Yelp account for years, but honestly, seeing all the small businesses downtown closing down is so disheartening, and my experience was so good here, and it's SO IMPORTANT to find a good tailor, I felt obligated to review TL. Fantastic. That's really you need to know, but I'll give more detail anyhow. I have been looking for an excuse to get a new suit for a while, so I went shopping when a friend asked me to be one of his ushers. He & the bride had the great idea to make the bridal party match only neckties and dress colours. Bay Days was on (50% off - score!) and they had some of the same suits as my usual, but as much as I like a deal, I won't wear a cheap-looking suit at any price - so I need a good tailor. This was my first experience using Townline. They were recommended by my brother who is more fashion-forward and more "metro" than me (we're both dead sexy, he's just better dressed). He says he's been there about 10 times and only had one complaint, which he never went back to address. By the way, I told the manager, Mark, about the referral; he said to tell my brother to bring his jacket back and they would remedy his complaint. To be honest I was a little concerned about their phone manner, it felt a little rushed when I called to ask about their availability. Boy was that concern ill-placed. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff in person. I didn't know how they would react to altering clothes I had bought elsewhere. The tags were still attached. Mark said this wasn't a problem; they do a lot of work from The Bay and Harry Rosen anyway. This attitude already puts them head-and-shoulders above other establishments. I'm very tall and have a large neck, but I keep in trim shape, so I'm hard to fit -- nonetheless, I was marked and pinned in about 10 minutes. This was on Tuesday, I told Mark the wedding was on Saturday, and he said come back on Friday afternoon and they can make any last-minute alterations as necessary. I left feeling very confident. In the meantime, I referred one of the other ushers to Townline and he had his pants hemmed same-day. Friday afternoon I picked up my new suit - fit perfectly and needed no further work. This was great because I had to circle the block 3 times and eventually park in the loading zone down the street (I know, I hate to be "that guy"). The pickup was a little rushed by me because of this, but this may be my new favourite suit. The price at TL was higher than I anticipated, but not unreasonable, especially considering the high quality of work. Mark was telling me they could make me a made-to-measure suit and showed me some of the details they can put into one. I will most likely be going back to Towline to buy my next suit... it will be my first MTM, and after this experience, I'm confident it will come out fantastic. I have to make a detour from my Langley office on the way home to get to Townline, but I believe I have found my tailor. read more

I have used Townline tailors on a few ocassions as it was very close to my work. Most recenetly I went to have the sleeves on a shirt slimmed and the legs slimmed on some jeans. I was measured up and they pinned the shirt and pants where I requested. I came back a week later to pick up my clothes and didn't try them on as they were closing when I picked them up. After getting home I tried on the items and the jeans were literally so tight I could not get them on, the shirt was also incredibly tight and I could barely move my arms. I went back to them and showed them the problem, they did not seem to be concerned at all. They said they would try and widen both the shirt and pants, but they had removed so much fabric I knew it wouldn't do any good. I went back to pick the items up and as expected they were ruined. I told them they were still ruined but they pretty much looked at me like I was crazy and it was tough luck. I have never been more dissapointed with a stores service, I would never go back to them and enourage everyone to do the same. I now go to Oakridge tailors and they do not even compare. read more

I went out of my way to drop off clothes to be worked on, and an employee was locking up as I arrived. I pointed out the time as being within the hours listen on their website, and she simply replied "we're closed". Point taken. I then wrote an email to the address listed on their website. Immediately, I received an email advising that it was returned undeliverable, as the address did not exist. Avoid until replaced by a business that values its customers. read more

Normally you'd expect someone professing to be a tailor, or even a seamstress who may be working from home, or in the back, to be able to press and sew straight. No such luck here, where I paid over $26 to have a mere headband altered to a specific size. The wobble and changing size throughout was appalling, embarrassing to wear. I took it back and they made another one just like it. When I mentioned it, no response. They were originally friendly enough. I looked online for best tailors available, since I didn't wish to risk this specialty fabric on a lousy tailor. But I was outsmarted. Sad. I had put off my project for several years, and now I've got the result I didn't expect. Ouch. read more

However, I ended calling back the next day because I decided I wanted my jeans shorter than where I had asked them to hem it to. They redid the hem for me that day free of charge! I took 4 pairs of jeans and 3 pairs of dress pants to Townline Tailors to be hemmed, as well as a T-shirt where part of the bottom hem had fallen and needed to be restitched, and a pair of dress pants that needed the zipper replaced. My experience was a bit mixed... maybe they do a much better job with suits and "high end" pieces, but I don't want to give my business to a tailoring shop that treats simple alterations carelessly. I may as well just take my clothes to a place in the mall then, and save some money too. My jeans turned out fine, as did the zipper replacement and 2 of the dress pants. The t-shirt came back looking really shabby, like it would have looked if I had done it myself. The t-shirt had a double row of stitching when I brought it too them, but after they ripped the thread out, they only did a single row and part of the fabric is badly snagged like they were in a hurry when taking out the old thread. Considering I paid $15 just for them to redo the hem (no measuring, no cutting), I'm disappointed. The third pair of dress pants was even more of a disappointment. One leg was half an inch longer than the other, and being slim leg pants, the length difference was very noticeable when I wore them. When I brought the pants back to have them fixed, their customer service was a bit lacking. When I walked into the shop, one of the tailors was busy with another customer. He greeted me but didn't call into the back of the shop for anybody to help me, so I figured no one else was available and stood waiting. After a while, another customer came in and went straight to the desk, and suddenly a tailor popped out from the back and began helping him. The first tailor said to the second that I was was there first, but I guess she didn't hear him or didn't care, because she ignored me. Meanwhile, the first tailor asked me what I needed, so I said I had a pair of pants hemmed at their shop and one leg was longer than the other. The customer having his suit fitted laughed nervously. Instead of relaying this to the second tailor, the first tailor just went back to his customer. After the second tailor was finished with the other customer she asked me what I needed. So I had to repeat the problem, this time in front of the other customer. She then went to do something else, came back, and asked me again. So I repeated myself a third time, you know, just in case their other customers didn't hear my complaint the first couple of times. I started coming to this shop based on the rave reviews here on Yelp, as well as another recommendation on a style message board I read. I brought them several simple alterations to see whether or not I could trust them enough to do some major alterations on a suit. Nope. I'll be on the lookout for a new tailor. Update: When I went back to pick up the pants, the shop reeked of cigarette smoke. That's unacceptable for a garment shop. I'm definitely not going back there. read more

I've had a bridesmaids dress taken in there, pants and skirts hemed, jean waistbands taken in, and much more. Recently, they created pockets for me in a suit jacket that didn't have any (womens' suits are stupid sometimes!). The pockets are awesome and perfectly executed. $160 POORER: I will no longer use and will not recommend TT to anyone based on the bad attitude I experienced. I haven't lived in Van for a few years, but on a visit home in September11 I took in 2 unworn work dresses for tailoring. The gruff older white haired woman refused to touch one dress without 'major restructuring work'. The other dress I just wanted darts in the waist, but I was talked into more expensive work. Since I've used them in the past I trusted her judgement and agreed. A week later (day before I was leaving town) I came in to pick up the dress. I was unhappy with the fit. The same woman undid the more expensive work. I didn't have time to try it on, and I stupidly paid and left. The next day I tried it on again and was even more unhappy. I called and spoke to the owner and told him so and he told me to come back when I was again in town and they would fix it. Fast forward to Dec 2011... I went in with the dress and put it on. The same woman was there. As soon as it became apparent I was complaining I was given a very sour faced attitude. Unfounded at that since I was never rude or disrespectful. The owner came out as well and they suggested it didn't fit as I must have gained weight and possibly needed Jenny Craig. I couldn't believe my ears! If you see me in person you know I am quite slim with no weight issue. I have in fact lost weight since September. When I mentioned that she had to undo the more expensive work I got a snide comment from the woman about $50 being no big deal. Unbelievably insulting! Given these people are supposed to be experts they would have known the dress would not have been improved by their alterations. These 'experts' should have not recommended $50 worth of work. At least then I could have returned the dress. FYI - I took the other dress they wouldn't touch to a Czech tailor in White Rock who did beautiful work for a very good price. Now I am out $110 for a dress I can't wear plus $50 for alterations that should have never been recommended given they are the 'experts' and I got called fat! read more

They were ridiculously expensive, very unfriendly, had HORRIBLE customer service, were unable to advise on how the dresses should fit and where they needed to be adjusted to fit better, they took FOREVER and the dresses still needed more work!!!!! Years ago, when the original owner was alive, mostly things went smoothly and service was good - with the exception of one female tailor who was always nasty and rude - now the staff seems to dictate how the business is run - even though there is still an owner - and the nasty female tailor is still there and nastier then ever. She flatly refused to help me the last time I went there (and the last time I will ever go there again) saying the item could not be hemmed. I refused to put up with her abuse in past, and she has carried a grudge ever since. So the new owner has her to thank for losing business for the company - I know about 300 people, and I will make sure none of us go there. Who needs to pay for a rotten attitude?!! Besides, the place always stinks of stale cigarette smoke. Horrible. read more

Had the lining on my jacket redone and a shirt made. The lining cost about $250 and 6 weeks later it is falling apart at the seems. Upon inspection the stitching is terrible - there's maybe 1.5 stitches per centimeter. I will have to have the entire lining restitched. It was a complete waste of time and money to have him do the work. I don't trust him to fix it so I'll have to take it somewhere else and pay again. I can't believe someone would let work like this leave their shop. The shirt was OK but the sleeves are not symmetrical and he left pink marking chalk on the cuffs - it is a white shirt! It hasn't come off in the wash so it's basically ruined. Also I doubt he is actually making the shirts as they come in sealed plastic packaging - they are probably mass manufactured elsewhere and sent back to the store. Not worth even half the money. The only reason he can keep his business running is because of how poor the tailors in Vancouver are in general. read more
