My daughter and Matt. Great motivator and Coach.
    Tasia M.

My daughter loves it. Her self esteem is improving and she's 16. She is not like when she first started coming here. Her body is getting fit, she's making better food choices and drinks lots more water. Her cardio has improved. We thank Matt for his passion for the sport and coaching. Definitely the best of the best. The entire staff is outstanding, we feel so welcomed and like we are family can't say enough about Matt and his hard work. Thank you.

On April 6, I noticed I was charged twice by the gym. I immediately contacted the gym and was told only a manager could help me. After waiting several days with no response, I contacted them again and was finally provided with a manager's email. The manager, Abigail, told me I needed to contact their billing company because they only showed one charge on their end. After speaking with the billing company, they discovered I had two active accounts with the gym, despite the fact that I had only signed up once. I requested the duplicate account be canceled and refunded, but the billing company told me the gym itself had to process the refund. I contacted the gym again and spoke with Abigail, who said she could not see the duplicate account and needed to contact the billing company herself. A week went by with no update until I reached out again. Abigail then stated she found the duplicate account, canceled it, and issued the refund. Two more weeks passed and I still had not received anything. Once again, I had to contact the gym myself for another update, and once again I was told Abigail needed to contact the billing company and would call me back. Another week passed with no communication. When I contacted the gym yet again, I then discovered that my actual active membership had somehow been canceled as well. At that point, I requested to speak with someone above Abigail because the situation had become extremely frustrating and unprofessional. No one at the gym would provide me with supervisor or ownership information. Instead, they gave me an email address for complaints -- the same email I had already used previously, which Abigail herself responded to. I was assured that if I submitted a complaint about Abigail, someone else would contact me, but that was not true. Abigail still ended up being the one who reached out. Eventually, the refund was finally issued and my annual fee was refunded as well. I appreciate that Abigail did ultimately work toward fixing the issue, but it should never take over a month to resolve a simple $40 duplicate charge. What disappointed me most was the lack of communication, accountability, and transparency from management. I loved the gym itself, the environment, and the workouts, but poor leadership and customer service can completely ruin an otherwise great experience. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened here.

I have never been disrespected by any men here. I go at different times of the day, both mornings and evenings, so I see different groups of people, and my experience has always been positive. Overall, the gym is great. I really like that there have been upgrades with new machines being added. It's nice to see the gym continuing to improve the equipment for members. One suggestion I would have is adding more recovery options. The sauna is great, but many gyms are starting to offer additional recovery amenities. It would be really nice to see things like massage chairs, a cold plunge, or other recovery features added for members. Another improvement that could help would be organizing some of the machines a bit more by section, such as grouping leg machines together and arm machines together. Aside from those suggestions, I really enjoy this gym. It's a clean, safe environment and a great place to work out. The staff here are also great and very helpful. I saw some people mention that the blonde woman who works here is rude, but that has not been my experience at all. She has always been very nice. She may have a strong voice and might come across as serious at first, but once you talk to her she is actually very kind. She may just not be a super bubbly person, and that's okay because everyone has different personalities. I would also like to point out that all of the employees here have been nice and respectful. But I do hope the owner see my review and does consider adding more recovery options : ) That would be Greattt !!!

Be very careful with Fitness Mania…read more My membership renews on December 31st, but their waiver hides a clause saying you must email them by December 25th or they won't process your cancellation until the next billing cycle -- meaning you get charged again even if you cancel before renewal. When I called, I was told this was "part of the waiver I signed" in a dismissive tone. California has strict laws requiring gym cancellation terms to be clear and not deceptive. An arbitrary holiday deadline buried in fine print is shady at best.

Not only has she helping me reach my fitness goals, but she continuously helps me become a better version of myself. She truly listens to my needs and is incredibly knowledgeable and has great expertise in powerlifting. As a person with a physical disability, I really appreciated that she never shied away from training me or treated me differently. I never have to worry about it being overcrowded and not getting everything we have planned for our session, huge plus it's always clean, and everyone is very welcoming. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone, no matter your fitness level or goals. There have been so many changes over the years to the gym here at UCR, mostly to try to better the place. They've moved things around, made things nicer, added more things, and overall improved the gym space but adding things like extra power racks and now they have a weight sled on the second floor. Service is generally friendly but usually whenever I ask the front desk for things, they seem lost or they act like they don't care about anything. Overall, I do think that this recreation center is a lot nicer than other the other UCs. Some of my complaints include that they refuse to have higher dumbbell limits, since the highest dumbbells only go up to 100. I know it's not in-demand to have them, but if students need to progress, you'd think they'd add more weights. I also don't like that they got rid of some of the leg machines downstairs and moved them upstairs. By doing that, you're making students become even more lazy from doing leg workouts more often and you've created a chicken leg epidemic! haha If you're coming to this gym from outside of the university, I believe that they have guest passes for $5. But if you're from UCR, I highly suggest utilizing this gym because it's included in your tuition.

Sometimes the SRC gets crowded, but that's mostly after the New Years. If you avoid prime hours of working out you'll have no problem getting the machines you need. At first, I missed my old girlfriend (Athletics United) but quickly I started I became infatuated by Ape Arena. Right off the bat they bought all new equipment. Rowers, Bikes, Bars, Plates, Ergs, Racks, Dumbbells, Kettlebells. It is a first class operation. Not to mention they have meals, supplements, and fitness plans to help meet your goals. The owner is a nut. Yes I said it. He is all over the map in a good way. He has unlimited energy. He's the type of person that you wanna be around because he inspires and motivates you. He is very intense and he might be crazy (in a good way). With that said, Chris is the guy you want to train you and energize this group fitness environment. Chris really cares and is so passionate about good technique, gains, health and he loves to yell, play loud music and motivate you. It is a blast. He is in your corner. Chris is a solid dude and you will take the time to give you the tools for your success. Jessica (Chris' wife) also is very passionate about fitness. She is a beast, and has an extra gear and often works out with the group when she is not busy with new clients. Chris and Jessica are an awesome team! It is more than a business to them and they love what they do which makes all the difference. Workouts: Expect the unexpected. No other workout routine can give you so much in so little time. I think the best part of Ape Arena is the family environment. Most people here are not teenyboppers or people that are looking to date other people, they are folks that are established and are trying their best to achieve personal goals and there is definitely a sense of community when we're all working out together. What sets this gym apart from others I believe from what I hear from my other friends at other gyms is our coaches are absolutely amazing. In addition to Chris, you have Malik and Chity (I know I misspelled it) and they are alike in consistency but all have great strengths individually. Collectively they are all professionals and masters of their craft and they all care about you, your goals, and your health. I love the team that they assembled I think I will be coming here a long time because I have so much fun doing hard work and the results I have seen are absolutely amazing. Pound-for-pound I am probably the strongest I have ever been in my life and that's pretty crazy because I was pretty fit in the Marine Corps. You can't go wrong at this gym but I will say things are not easy. You have to put in the work. You have to be focused. You have to work on things that coaches to tell you to do. You have to like the feeling of sweat dripping all over the place. Thank you Ape Arena and all the coaches. You know who you are. You guys are amazing people.
