I've been wanting to come back here for a while. The pancakes are huge and I've been craving one. I was driving my mom back to the North Hills from an appointment in Wexford and was hangry because the appointment ran well over an hour late and I didn't have coffee yet lol. The weather is kind of gross and people are driving crazy so I thought, let's grab some food and pulled into the lot. The diner itself is a decent size. They have plenty of booths and tables or you can sit at the counter. I got a coffee and the Little Al. It did not disappoint. The pancake is literally the size of the plate and pretty thick too. Really wanted to love this old fashioned diner chock full of funky old memorabilia. The server was super nice. But the odd thing....my omelet (the Florentine) had very little flavor - and same goes for the hash browns. My husband got the "Little Al" - which was not little! Best breakfast in Pittsburgh I've ever had! Missy was our server, we were greeted and sat right away. Food came out quickly. All 3 in our party ordered the Little Al. I requested a blueberry pancake with mine. The pancakes are HUGE and so so good! You can also get pierogis as your potato side and I'm so glad I did. The potato filling was well seasoned. However besides the place needing an updating and good cleaning we sat at the bar and watched the cooks. No hairnets and one with no gloves touching everyone's food barehanded!! I feel like good diners are something for which Pittsburgh is in short supply. So when my buddy suggested we have lunch at Totin's Diner, I quickly obliged. This place definitely has the throwback ambience of an old school diner. So points there. And even though there was a small line to be seated, we didn't wait long at all. Everything was clean, albeit showing lots of signs of wear. Regardless , it all added to the charm. I had the pot roast sandwich with fries. Meat was cooked perfectly, really fork tender. Where I dock a couple stars comes down to two things. First, for a diner, I expect in and out service. The menu is small enough that the kitchen should be turning out your order in under 10 minutes. We waited about 20 minutes after ordering. And we didn't order anything off book. Don't get me wrong, in the grand scheme 20 minute is not a long time, but in the diner realm, it sure felt out of the ordinary. That said the bigger issue for me was my whole meal was just way over salted for my taste. I know Pittsburghers like their food saltier, but for me it was bordering on inedible. Even now, an hour later, I still feel the saltiness in my mouth. And it's unfortunate, because it was otherwise a well prepared, home style meal. I may need to give this place a second chance as everyone has an off day depending on who and what is going on in the kitchen. But for now it's three stars. Disappointing as it could easily have been four or five stars had they just held back on the salt. read more

Out shopping with a friend and looking for a place for a late (noon) breakfast. Most places were packed or we had already passed them by and didn't feel like retracing our route. Saw the Totin's sign and decided to stop. Very small diner (maybe 12 booths total) and very busy on a Saturday. Had about a 20 minute wait which was much less than we thought it would be. Booths are very comfortable and provided plenty of space. Noise level was minimal even with all tables filled. Cute black, white and red decor with some neat old-fashioned pictures. We both ordered the breakfast with cinnamon French toast, eggs, choice of potatoes, bread and breakfast meat. Very Pittsburgh that pierogies were a potato choice! The French toast was amazing and the star. Thick slice of cinnamon swirl toast, grilled well, perfect compliment to a little butter and syrup. Hash browns were a little light for both of us but still good. Sausage was thick links with a really nice flavor. Looked dry but not at all. Eggs were cooked perfectly for both of us, one over easy and one over medium. Bread was toast for one of us and English muffin for the other. Both well toasted. The two guys in the kitchen were hopping. Very fast service and if the hash browns were a bit darker would have been perfect. The waitress was good but had to ask for a coffee refill. Prices are quite high. With a decent tip, breakfast came to over $40. At $4 a cup for coffee, expected a few refills but only got the one that was asked for. All the condiments were on the table so glad she stopped by to check on us so I could ask for that refill. Probably won't stop again for a casual breakfast. The pancakes are also some of the thickest pancakes I've ever seen. They give you two of them, but one is plenty. Their texas toast is also very thick. The sausage is thick and has kind of a maple flavoring to it. I had a little bit of the kielbasa and it was okay, but a little expensive for really only half of a piece of it. The bacon was okay. I was lucky that I was dining alone for breakfast that day and was able to snag a stool at the counter. I've left this place numerous times just because the line was too long. They have some really good food at this place. I've tried numerous breakfast and lunch offerings. The portions are huge, but the price matches the serving size. On this last trip I order the Little Al. It had a slice of bacon, a sausage link, home fries and a huge pancake. To that I added a glass of iced tea. My bill was $21.
