If anyone asks me for a recommendation on where to get sushi I tell them this place. I love the comforting atmosphere here. This restaurant can be really quiet or really loud depending on who's dining. It's very small so I wouldn't recommend a large group to dine here. I love that they say where they got their fish and what is fresh that day/week. The portions here are great too! Everyone here are very kind, especially this one lady who serves. She's super sweet and talks with her customers. Their menu offers so many of my favorite Japanese foods so I don't think I'll ever get tired of this place. I have lived in Beaverton for most of my life but had never tried this place (mostly because of the area that it is in), but I am so glad that I finally did! It's definitely a small hole in the wall type of restaurant, but that makes it feel much more authentic and special. I immediately felt like I was transported to Japan when I walked in. I ordered the regular sushi combo, which came with soup, salad, several nigiri pieces , and a tuna roll. This was a really good deal for the amount of food that it came with. The fish tasted fresh and my favorites were the hamachi and the crab salad. The sushi wasn't crazy spectacular, but the combination of the ambiance, sushi chef, and customer service really made the dining experience worth it. Will definitely be back! read more

I went to this place for the first time in Aug 2023 and it was awesome. Price is great, fish is fresh and such a nice cozy restaurant. Came back again in Mar 2024, the price for the same item is almost 140% increased. I also noticed they put less expensive fish. I've heard Toshi's be held in high esteem by foodies in town, but i found it to be a middling experience for its price point. Though the skill and preparation of the food is unmatched, I found the eating experience to be lacking. The interior feels rather crowded, and service came slower. Granted, it is a very popular spot. The sushi is expertly prepared, but came out much colder than anticipated. I've been told the restaurant wasn't always this way, and from what I can tell, seating / service demands for this restaurant have progressively raised- especially after covid. I'm willing to take a second chance on Toshi's for the sake of the chef's expertise- but it seems like other elements are holding it back. read more

One of my friends recommended that I come here since the sushi is prepared by a master sushi chef. It's a small and cozy restaurant with both tables and counter seating. Decided to try a bunch of different dishes and they were all delicious!!! Squid salad: much better than I thought - lots of squid covered in a light sauce. Tamago, Inari, Unagi, Spicy Hotate Hand Roll: All tasty and the tamago was noticeably higher quality than the tamago made in other sushi places. Onigiri: the onigiri here are huge. You can order 2 and it could be your whole meal. My fav was the bonito flake one. Chirashi: very fresh and tasty. Again, noticeable different - higher in quality vs the other sushi restaurants in the area. Tempura: light and crispy, I loved the sweet potato tempura that they make! The prices are also great for the quality and quantity that you get. Honestly, I don't see why you would pick other sushi places in the Hillsboro area when you can come here. I have been an avid fan of this place since I moved here in'17. After last night I don't think I will be back. We came in hungry and ready for some food. It was busy. We were sat. Weirdly no one came to greet us. Then about 10 minutes later, a server came to our table and said that we would have to relinquish our table, because someone had previously had a reservation and they didn't have a table for them. (Meanwhile others were sat.) He told us we would have to wait at least another 30 minutes. Not only were we humiliated but it was with no remorse. No apology no care no customer service. I am not only shocked but saddened that our special night was ruined. Maybe learning some customer service skills would be great. read more

My friend raved about Toshi's for a really long time, saying it is one of the best sushi restaurants in Beaverton. So i figured why not give it a try since take out is the best way to support our favorite restaurants during this pandemic, right? So i quickly placed a to go order by phone, and was asked to pick up 30 mins later. I ordered a unakyu roll (river eel with cucumber), a rainbow roll (highly recommended by my friend), and a set of creamy scallop nigiri. By the time I picked up the to go box, I noticed it's quite warm. Probably from the rice, I thought. Which later proven to be the case. First of all, everything looked oh-so-pretty; especially the rainbow roll. It reminded me of sushi donuts, which have all ingredients on top. The creamy scallops were also neatly wrapped and topped as well. I was cheery when I saw the presentation :) Then, I got to see and tasted the aftermath of warm sushi rice: unakyu roll fell apart because of the steam, and raw fish toppings lost their crunchiness as well. The heat wasn't hot enough to cook the raw fish, but just enough for me to see/taste the difference. The meal was still enjoyable, it just isn't what I expect from a sushi house. Even though this experience wasn't mind blowing for me, I can see how amazing it could be if the sushi rice wasn't so warm. It's a family own shop that offers good sushi, I hope it'll be awesome when I visit again. Wish I could give 3.5 stars. PS. Worth the drive from Portland when you need that authentic sushi fix and there's a two-week wait to get into Kaede. While it is not inexpensive, with many rolls around nine bucks, It is definitely a quality place. It was terrific from the miso soup on. We ordered some $24 sushi, lunch specials, yakitori, and random assorted nigiri. There were also some very appealing sounding cooked lunch specials like miso salmon. Awesome small shop. You would never guess how good this place is based on location driving by the strip mall. 27 seats by my count. 5 star service, very fast & friendly. The workers were going hard and fast. Perfect for a quick sit down sushi lunch. 5 star quality of ingredients as well. Presentation was probably 3 stars (which I don't care about), some of the sashimi was a bit odd shaped, but who cares. I finally got around to trying this spot, and I'm glad I did. Seared Salmon Sushi (nigiri) was good, Agedashi Tofu was solid. The salad they serve in the beginning was absolutely amazing??!!! I've had similar salads at other sushi spots but this one was my fav. For entrees, I shared Curry Udon with a side of Chicken Katsu & the summer special Hiyashi Chuka Cold Ramen Noodle. The curry broth was good but the udon noodles could have been more chewy, which was prob due to preparation, but admittedly the intimate restaurant was busy with a Friday night dinner rush. Paired with the chicken katsu it was delicious though. My real winner from this spot was the summer cold ramen, for $17.95, which I'll be coming back for many more times this season. The one thing though is if you want to eat Toshi's on the Friday night or Saturday night, you'll need to prepare a long wait as it gets really busy. Never would I think an authentic and quality Japanese restaurant would be tucked away in a dingy strip mall, but after eating here, I'd rank it as one of the top 3 in the Portland metro. But you have to make sure to get there at the right time, because it's an extremely small restaurant and gets filled up within minutes. Moving on, they serve sushi, ramen, udon, tempura based dishes, gyoza, Japanese style curry, marsh made from pork or chicken, ice cream filled mochi, and a host of other Japanese dishes. Beverages include various sake and Japanese beer, Ramune, oolong tea (either hot or cold), and regular soda. I think it's also important to note that the chef and the waiters are Japanese, and there are even menus in both English and Japanese. If you want miso and salad with your sushi, your sushi order must total to $12.95. But other than that, these two items come with most of the entrees on the menu. You can also order them separately as side items. The only issue I think the restaurant should address is where people line up while they're waiting to be seated. Because the restaurant is so small and so many people were waiting, the front door was completely blocked. It felt quite Hunger Game-ish because since they were all clamoring to be placed on the list, they would not step aside and I had to actually push my way out. This really ruined a good meal, and it's sad because it was entirely preventable. *Order:* Iced Oolong Tea ($3.50)- It was good, but not as strong as I liked it. Could've been due to the ice. California Sushi Rolls ($6.95)- 6 rolls made of genuine crab, fish eggs, cucumbers, and rice. Came with a good amount of wasabi and ginger. These rolls were very, very good! Chicken Katsu Curry ($12.95)- Fried breaded chicken served with rice and Japanese style curry. This is the one dish I consistently order at Japanese style restaurants. Though I can't say it was the best in the metro area, it was still good. Miso Soup (Free w/meal)- Delicious! It had fresh green onions and bits of tofu at the bottom. Salad (Free w/ meal)- The sauce was my favorite part of it and the lettuce tasted fresh. *Wait time:* None to be seated, 5-10 minutes to get our order taken, and 25-20 minutes for the food itself to come out. *Seating:* There are 6-7 seats at the bar, and 6 tables. It was very flavorful, and the katsu sauce was thick and yummy, and the chicken was crispy, but only if it wasn't overcooked, it would be 5 stars. I'm not going to be put 1 stars since it is a sushi place, and maybe it was my fault buying fried chicken at a sushi place but idk, still not good to surve chicken dry as the desert. After two failed attempts, we finally found an authentic and legit Japanese restaurant! Located about a half an hour from Portland, we drove out to Beaverton. After scanning the reviews and photos, we came to Toshi's. We came in about fifteen minutes before they were about to close. When we walked in, we asked the young male server, if they were still ok to serve us and he seated us. The interior is rather small with one older Japanese man making the sushi. The menu was quite extensive and we decided on the Tenzaru soba and a sushi/tempura soba. The sushi selection is what you will find in sushi bars in Japan. No rolls loaded with sauces here! It's your basic nigiri and sashimi kind of place. Very traditional. The sushi was fresh and not warm or hot like the last place we ate at. The tempura was fried perfect with generous amounts of veggies and shrimp. The bill was a little under $50 for the two of us but it was so worth it! I'm glad I didn't give up on my search for decent Japanese here in the Portland area. We'll definitely return when we're back in the area! read more

Oregon is not known for its excellent sushi, let alone sashimi, but Toshi's without a doubt, delivers. All the items in this bowl, from the thinly sliced unagi, to the fat slices of salmon, even the subtle placing of the alfalfa sprouts shows a passion and knack for detail. Additionally, the uni, although not an item I usually go for, is undoubtedly quality grade - the fishy taste usually associated with it is present but is not too overpowering. Although seemingly small, this bowl is hefty. There is enough to make someone who eats a decent amount (like me!) quite full. Although the portions of sashimi and other items are quite sparse, there is much variety in the types of things in the bowl. Now why would this rating thus receive a rating of four stars? Price price price. Although I am eating QUALITY ingredients, this is not your average meal. Be prepared to drop about $30 (including tip) on this meal. This is a small proprietor, Japanese forward restaurant with tons of choices. It is not roll heavy but rather more true to Japanese, with many great choices in more classic fish like mackerel, octopus, uni (urchin), large egg roe and so forth. I found the menu intimidating it was a bit too large. My son and I had the yellow tail tuna collar and it was the best collar I have had, nicely grilled and large. At $14 it's a good deal. So was the $25 deluxe Chirashi bowl, it's like eating through a wonderland of flavors. Rice you might ask, also exceptional, clumpy and soft. Just right. You could definitely knock this place down for it's strip mall location, a somewhat tired decor, small square footage, and just average service. This place is more cozy and family oriented, it won't transport you anywhere. After all this is the suburbs of Portland. The clientele this Monday night was almost all families with small kids which was cool (LOCALS). This place is not for large groups, deuces and up to about 6 person parties is about all Toshi is setup for. Also the locals pack this place it seems from other reviews at peak times so BEWARE. Just not our place. I will in way pretend I know authentic Japanese food. We have a place on "our side" of town we like to go to and love and that is how we judge our food, well and also by taste. This isn't gourmet or fancy, more like comfort food. The food: We got the Toshi Gozen, gyoza, Golden Roll, and katsu curry. The gyoza was great, buuut the rest was just not our thing. The golden roll was battered with tempura and we are use to panko also, there was roe in it. The main dishes were okay chicken teriyaki and katsu curry were editble nothing amazing. Lastly, the salad I was NOT a fan of the dressing at all. Service: Meh? Nothing great about nothing horrible. We came right as they opened. We got the sat right away and go our drink orders going. It took a while to get our order in and to get our food. We got refills on our drinks and our checks split easily. If you live in the area, try it see if it's your thing.
