11/23/24: Short version - very good food, nice selection of menu options (ribeye tacos, esquites, cubana, cochinita), options galore of aguas frescas, and an unexpected supply of baked goodies. Longer version - stopped in this particular Saturday for an early dinner, around 4:00 pm. Never been to a Tortas before so didn't know what to expect. This location is part of a larger shopping area which means there was no shortage of parking spots. All three of us ordered different items and we all enjoyed everything. There was a slight language barrier, making our ordering a bit comedic, but we got 'er done with nodding and pointing. When we asked a question the young super friendly gal taking our order couldn't answer, she quickly called rustled up another gal who could help us. Although we didn't speak to any other staff, everyone looked happy and were smiling. To me that's a good sign. If the staff is happy, it's a good place to eat. For the aguas frescas we had the melon flavor and a horchata. The horchata had more cinnamon than other places I have been, and it was delicious! Amongst the three of us we ordered: ribeye tacos, cochinita, esquites, french fries, flan, and a Cubana. My sister devoured the tacos (they were small so no chance of leftovers, anyway), I ate half of my cochinita (saving room for dessert!), and our friend did the same with her Cubana. Never having esquites before, I did not know what to expect, but damn was that good. I mean, I love corn, but that extra spice made it extra tasty. The dangerous part of Tortas was their bakery sections (dangerous to my waist line, ha ha). They had some chocolate strawberries, flan, cakes, and other items close to the food counter. At the back of the store, however, was an even larger selection of baked goods. Not all the racks had names so we randomly selected a few things and took them home. Yum, yum, yum.

The area around this joint may not be the most desirable, but that does not mean you should sleep on this place! My coworkers and I stopped by on a Thursday afternoon after filming some content. It wasn't busy at all and the space was well-maintained - bright and clean. They had all sorts of Mexican goodies on their menu, along with a solid amount of combo meals. They also had a cute display of several ice cream flavors that looked appetizing. There was also a whole case of donuts and other pastries on another wall that looked intriguingly delicious. Also appreciated the topping bar next to the drink station with salsa, veggies, guacamole, you name it. The ordering and wait time situation was ideal considering that a large group of people suddenly walked in. They had three women in the front cooking up a storm for the 10+ people that ordered a bunch of food. It was kind of a wait to get my food, but it was totally fine with just three people preparing multiple orders. I ordered the carne asada torta (minus jalapeños). The meat was tasty and I especially liked how small each strip was. I hate when pieces of meat inside a sandwich or wrap are super long and you have to tear into it just so the whole strip doesn't come out of the bread. The meat along with the avocado, lettuce, beans, and tomato really brought a nice flavor combination. I was quite satisfied with my food choice. There were also some nicely salted chips on the side, just wish there were more because there were maybe seven chips tossed onto the trap next to the sandwich. Another note before I wrap this up: my boss got a cup of strawberry ice cream. He said he'd give it a 6/10 because, while it was sweet, it didn't have that strong of a strawberry flavor. He said it was more like vanilla with a hint of strawberry. Anyway, a good amount of seating, clean facilities, and a nice menu with tasty options.

Came here with my sister. The cashier didn't know english but one of the workers was able to translate. We were able to test out the drink options. We got lemonade. It was good and refreshing. We also got tacos and it combos with a combo with a drink and fries. The tacos were carne asada and one chicken. I also got chips and salsa. It was okay. Definitely got nachos and they were really good.

This place is always crowded at lunch time and I finally got a chance to try it out. Looks small on the outside but it's actually spacious inside.. plenty of table and booth seating. I started with the esquites (corn off the cob w/mayo, cotija cheese, lime & chili) very good.. small portion was a good size for two to share. The cochinito pibil torta was loaded up with fresh toppings but the bread choice was not the best as it was soggy and wet before my first bite. Bread was good in flavor and soft, but not right for this filling. I wanted it to be hotter, spicy hot, I added salsa from the condiments bar I added French fries to my order, a small side of chips was included with my torta, and i added pickled carrots and the pickling juice on top for some added flavor and heat.. yum! They have fountain drinks or a variety of Mexican bottled sodas. Good variety of options ... tortas, tacos, nachos, flautas, desserts (flan, cake, fresas con crema) and pan dulce .. carne asada, ribeye, pork, fish.. they also serve breakfast. Stop in you won't be disappointed.. I ordered a lot of food and didn't get through half. I felt bad dumping half of a torta but I knew it would just be a soggy mess when I got around to eating it for dinner. Also this location is in a strip mall and it faces 43rd Avenue not Indian school.

I want to state of by saying this has nothing to do with the food food has been always will be at 100% delicious. However customers service need some work. I called to put in a phone order and was told that it could only be completed if I gave my card information over the phone. I was shocked because the other location in Laveen allows for phone order to be placed and paid for at pick up. This lack of uniform policy make it very inconvenient customers. Please note. !!!!!!!!

The restaurant is inside of an old brick home with wood interior and warm colors. The service was good-- friendly and food came out at a good pace, we were checked on regularly. We ordered an appetizer and then entrees from the lunch menu. The aguachile appetizer is SO good. It's bright, fresh, and has a lot of flavor in the green sauce. It reminds me of a ceviche type dish due to its raw butterflied shrimp that is marinated in the house made chile serrano & cilantro citrus sauce. It was awesome. We were also given free chips & house made bean dip. I ordered the mixed two item plate with a chile rellano and taco corazon (grilled taco dipped in a red chile sauce, stuffed with shredded beef & melted cheese. Topped with grilled onions). The black beans and rice is also tasty. I tried a bite of the other dishes, and I also really liked the brightly colored spinach & cheese enchiladas with pink sauce ( signature beet sauce). I look forward to trying other items from the menu, I was eyeing the steak Mexicano or red snapper. Those dishes sound good for dinner.

The restaurant has a small bar of three seats to enjoy some drinks.. initially we were just going to have margaritas for six dollars during happy hour but decided to have guacamole as well for $10 on happy hour. Guacamole was excellent and came with a bean dip. To complement, our guacamole and chips we checked out the salsa bar. The salsa bar has over six choices of salsa. One of my favorite salsas was hibiscus. We enjoyed our quick happy hour so much that we hope to come back for dinner as I see Mole is on the menu. The staff was super friendly and attentive. I hear that they have open a second venue not too far from the original place. They have an event venue. Their original place is in a former church. The architecture inside is very interesting due to the roof structure.

Out of all the restaurants I had before leaving Arizona, THIS ended up being one of the places I couldn't stop thinking about after I moved away. Ever since leaving, I've randomly craved these tacos constantly. I've tried other taco spots in Denver hoping something would compare, but honestly nothing really hit the same. So when I came back out to Phoenix recently to visit some friends, this was one of the first places I knew I needed to come back to because I had built it up so much in my head over time. And somehow... it was just as good again. The meat tastes incredibly fresh, flavorful, and well-seasoned, and you can literally watch them prepare everything right in front of you, which makes the whole experience even better. There's something so satisfying about seeing the tacos being made fresh instead of food just appearing from the kitchen. You can tell they care about quality and consistency. The servers were also super friendly and welcoming both times I came here, which honestly makes such a difference. Everyone had great energy, the service was quick, and the whole place just feels inviting and authentic. I honestly think the fact that I remembered this place so vividly for so long says everything. Usually when you revisit a restaurant after hyping it up in your head for years, it ends up disappointing you. But this place tasted exactly how I remembered it, fresh, flavorful, comforting, and absolutely worth the obsession. Safe to say this place is officially a mandatory stop for me anytime I'm back in Phoenix now.

Also bring a group. The portions are huge and the food is clearly meant to be shared. Trust me on this one, bring friends. I've tried a bunch of dishes here, and there are a few I always go back to. For the table, Camarones Locos is an easy choice. The flame grilled shrimp comes out hot and full of flavor, perfect for passing around. La Patrona ceviche tower is massive and worth the order. When it hits the table, you immediately feel good about the decision. El Pulpazo is technically an entrée, but we always order it as a shareable. The octopus is grilled perfectly and it comes with rice and beans, so everyone gets a little of everything. For entrées, my number one pick is the Lobster and Crab Enchiladas with green sauce. I think about this dish at least once a week. The enchiladas are packed with lobster and crab, and the green sauce ties the whole thing together. Honestly, I could talk about this place all day. Our party arrived right on time for our reservation, but we were not seated until 15 min later because our table was not ready. It took about an additional 15 min to get tap water for the table (there was not enough provided anyways), and to place our orders too another ~20 min. The food did not arrive until 30 min later. For context, we eventually learned that the restaurant was short staffed and the bartender was also operating as our waiter. When the food finally arrived, there was a mix-up on what was delivered. We had checked with the staff who delivered one of the dishes: we ordered the "wild mushroom" side, but what we received did not look quite like it. We asked clarifying questions x2, but were assured, "no, it is the wild mushroom." Turned out, it was the mushroom empanada that was delivered to our table, which we originally did not order. The management did rectify the situation upon the conclusion of the event when we were paying the bill, but to us, it felt a bit accusatory as if we intentionally wanted to cause a huge fuss about the final total, which was absolutely not the case. The food in general was delicious. If this was a more standard dining experience, it would have been 4-5 stars just for the food. The service was very subpar, and really colored the entire experience negatively, therefore the two star review. I understand that staffing shortages happen -- fine. My family has worked in food service as wait staff for 25+ YEARS, so I am empathetic. But for management to ring up our bill and then come confront us in an inflammatory manner, making us feel like we were wrong, on an occasion to celebrate something special, was extremely disappointing.
