torii is a solid spot if you're looking to treat yourself without going full fine dining. the unagi, salmon, and yellowtail nigiri were all super fresh and practically melted in your mouth. the miso ceviche was also so bright and refreshing the beef skewer and wagyu plate were delicious, but sooo tiny so not rlly worth the price. the maki and spider roll were decent, but nothing particularly standout it did take a while for some of our dishes to come out, but the service was impeccable. they were very communicative about wait times and super attentive throughout the meal. overall, a nice place for quality sushi and a special night out, just be prepared for smaller portions and a slightly higher bill read more

We tried Torii Japanese Inspired and overall had a really great experience. This place is great if you're looking for sushi that's higher quality than AYCE, and not as expensive as high high end sushi. We started with the hamachi crudo and salmon crudo, both tasted very fresh and bright. The yellowtail crudo was my favorite - the yuzu flavor really stood out and added a nice citrusy balance. We also ordered the spicy edamame, which had great flavor, along with the negi hamachi maki and negi toro maki. The maki rolls were pretty simple, but well-executed and tasty. The star of the meal was definitely the 6-piece chef's choice nigiri set. Each piece was nicely seasoned and honestly didn't need soy sauce. We were sitting at the bar and could see the care and effort the chef put into every piece, the fish was all so so good. It seems like they might be under new management. When we went, they were doing a soft opening and gave us a limited menu, which wasn't what we were expecting since we had looked the place up beforehand. They also let us know they aren't licensed to serve alcohol yet, which was totally fine with us but good to know ahead of time. We ordered the salmon and tuna rolls, and both were well seasoned with good portion sizes. We also got the pork belly yakimono. One of the employees was nice enough to throw in the chicken yakimono for us to try, which I really appreciated. The pork belly was just okay, but the chicken was great and would recommend trying it! We also tried one of their weekly sashimi specials. It looked really nice, but I'd probably skip it next time. Overall, I think my main disappointment was not realizing how limited the menu would be, but I'm hopeful they'll expand it as they get settled. The experience felt upscale, yet the vibe was relaxed and casual, which made it very comfortable. The chef even explained the preparation process, which added a personal and authentic touch to the meal. Stepping into Torii offered respite from the constant hustle of the shopping center. It looks like just another strip mall restaurant but true to its name, i felt transported to another world! The space is calm and peaceful. I loved the dark green walls with natural toned furnishings. Food was served on gorgeous ceramic dishes. 5 stars for amazing food and service! I can't stop thinking about the mushroom nabe. It was so buttery, delicious and packed with umami. The nigiri special was equally tasty. My favorites were the amberjack nigiri, tuna nigiri, and hamachi crudo. Each had unique flavors. We also ordered chicken karaage that was fried well and served with house pickles and a creamy, decadent aioli. We will be back to try more food and maybe order a mushroom nabe for myself. read more

It's good. Is it the best? No. We found this place after going next door for dessert one day and decided we wanted to try Torii. And so we came back another day. When we walked in, there was 2 other parties but the restaurant was very empty with lots of tables. Despite multiple tables, we were seated next to a mom and her screaming baby. While I have compassion for how difficult motherhood is and how children will cry to communicate, it did 100% affect the dining experience. I'm not sure why we weren't offered to sit somewhere else at any point of the dining experience considering there were at least 4 other tables. Food also took a really long time. We weren't particularly in a rush but we were mindful of time. The appetizer came out fast while everything else took another 20 min after the appetizer came out to come out. I can understand being busy and backlogged. There's a lot of things we don't see behind the scenes, for example any takeout orders, if a party had a big order, understaffing, emergencies, etc. however, through my whole time here, there was only one take out order and that was already ready either before we ordered food or right after. There wasn't many diners either. The employees honestly seemed more concerned with getting ready for the lunch break and prepping than serving the customers. We ordered a hamachi crudo , chirashi bowl, and a shaken beef bento. The crudo came out fast, within within 10 minutes. But after that, it took quite a while to get food. Food was good. I liked the crudo as it was refreshing. Everything tasted decently fresh but nothing that blew me away. I likely won't be back. Just the whole experience wasn't great quite frankly. Well decorated with attentive service, this restaurant is a great option in Katy for people looking for higher quality sushi than the countless AYCE's that have popped up recently. Overall, the fish tasted fresh and the lunch portions were quite good, but I will admit I was not impressed in the same way I have been at other higher end sushi spots closer to Downtown. Granted, this is one of the better options in the area and I was especially a fan of how fresh the tuna and bass tasted. I had seen some good looking sushi pictures and happened to be in the area, so was excited to give this place a try. The big takeaway is that this place is VERY pricey, way more than we expected to pay for a lunch, and the portions are very small. Food: we had some nigiri and sushi roll from their daily special menu, as well as a chirashi and a bento box. The flavor was great, but the nigiri pieces were tiny! We ended paying over $200 for our lunch, which is a bit pricey for this type of establishment. Today, Feb 1, 2024 is a lucky day for me! I was checking out this restaurant last night only to know that they are open for dinner only. BUT today when I drove past the restaurant, I saw the big banner hanging outside with the words "OPEN FOR LUNCH"! I was ecstatic!! The restaurant is pretty small. The largest group seating is for a party of 6. However, there are a good number of bar seating. The decor is clean and warm. The ambiance is good. The lunch menu is only one page with very limited choices. However, there are some special items on the chalk board behind the chef counter. I ordered chirsashi bowl with miso soup, and sashimi special with salad. The miso soup was ok. The salad was in 2 bunches of variable vegetables, seasoned in salt and pepper on top, and sesame dressing at the bottom of the bowl (salad wasn't drench in the dressing). The sesame dressing was salty. Eating the greens with salt on top together with the sesame dressing was way too salty for me. I was then served the sashimi special which I throughly enjoyed. The crudo was kanpachi with Asian pear in ponzu sauce. The roll had king salmon in it. The salmon sashimi was lightly smoked, and the rest of the sashimi pieces were as per usual. After some wait, I got my Chirashi bowl. There were plenty of seasoned raw fish in the bowl. All the sashimi pieces were fresh and seasoned perfectly. I had some uni in my bowl too! The best item in the Chirashi bowl was the well-seasoned rice! There was some waiting time in between the courses despite only having 3 customers in the restaurant. But good things come to people who wait. So to me, it was worth the wait. I hope they will expand the lunch menu soon! read more

New Japanese restaurant that just opened up inside Katy Asia town near our home. Came here to try it out. First off the decor is really nice and warm. Many different light fixtures that go well together. Clean and the staff was amazing. We came later in the night so the restaurant was slow but they were very attentive of when we finished each dish. Blaire was great at describing each dish we got and providing good recommendations. We ordered: Yuzu sake. - very citrus and fruity Kinushiro Junmai nigori sake Ora king crudo - my favorite dish, New Zealand salmon Watari gani karaage-4 pieces of soft shell crab with papaya nước mắm Sake toro and hirame sashimi- hirame is like himache and was amazing! Wagyu hot rock- the pickled wasabi was very unique and citrusy Mushroom nabe- very unique dish with fried rice and truffle sauce. The oyster mushrooms were so good! Not in the typical crowded areas of Katy Asia town, hubs and I stumbled upon this place only because we really didn't know what to eat and just drove around. First recommendation - sit at the bar, especially on the side (back facing the front door). You get to see the chefs in action, even slice open a fresh yellowtail with skin on and everything. Service from the bar staff was great. Most items were good - hamachi crudo, pork skewer (no photo - hubs ate it before the photo!), foie gras and several of the sashimi tastings. I like how they put a spin on the sashimi and dressed them instead of having just plain fish that you dip in soy sauce - in fact, I don't think they even had any soy sauce bottles around. The roll even had its own dressing - although it could've used more. The hamachi kama was grilled to perfection! My only complaint is that the food was pretty slow even though there were only 2-3 other tables in the restaurant. You can see some of the chefs being super intricate with decorating the food. Yes, some was pretty, but we were so hungry, I wanted to hurry and eat. I think they knew it was a bit slow because the chef did throw in a freebie dish while we waited - which was delish! Pricing wasn't too bad. Japanese is pretty expensive so I knew we were going to eat at least $100 - which we did and we still had some room afterwards. First time trying out this new sushi place in Katy Asian Town. We had such a great time here! Our friend referred us so we gave it a try. Food: delicious! Most of the fish are fresh and great quality. Our favorites are the ora king (king salmon), unagi, and the hamachi. My only suggestion about the food is for the miso soup to be a bit more warm (prefer hot/warm soup vs room temperature one). Most of the nigiri we had are made with perfection. I hope the chefs will continue to deliver the same great quality and taste. Because we love it! Service: the staffs are very friendly. They made sure to answer our questions and requests. They also offered complimentary drink for us to help with the fatty taste of certain dishes. Ambience: the decoration of the place is very modern, chic, and pretty. Although, for most sushi places, I prefer lighting to be more dim and less bright. I feel like that will make the place and the ambience more relaxing. It might compliment the wine and the atmosphere a bit better. Hygiene: All the plates, silverware, glasses are clean and spotless. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to plates hygiene, so I'm very glad this place maintain such cleanliness. Bathroom/toilet: because the restaurant occupancy is small, so there's two rooms for the gentlemen and the ladies. Toilet is super clean, organized, and have adequate soap, sanitary napkins and paper towels. Overall, we had a wonderful culinary experiences here. Their style is omakase-like so expect the food takes time to come out. However, we appreciate that the chef takes his time presenting such an art on the plate. We had a $125/person omakase. I was really surprised that they let us do an omakase during lunch time, but they said they can do it as soon as they get their fish in (which means the fish is very fresh too)! We had 10 dishes total ($12.50 per dish). Some of the dishes with two pieces (one would be for me and the other for my fiance). It was a good introduction to the many fish they have, so that if I ever come back I have a good idea of what to order. My top three favorite dishes was the appetizer crudo, the dish with the three white fishes, and the miso cod. The yellowtail with yuzu was the tastiest crudo. The two flavors just complement each other so well. The oysters also had a yuzu foam on top of it that hits you right off the bat, but after the initial yuzu you can taste the delicious oyster underneath. I really enjoyed the oysters. The miso cod had such a nice creamy sauce and I loved that the fish was fatty but the skin was completely crispy. This was one of my favorites! I enjoyed the dish with the amberjack, flounder, and sea bass more than the one with the trout and salmon. The ora king salmon today was a bit too fishy for my taste and usually the sake toros I've had at other places are a little more on the fatty side. Honorable mentions to the butter scallops and seared tuna with truffle oil too if you want something more umami. read more

What a gem! They recently opened in Katy Asia town by Mango Mango. Interior is so quaint yet upscale. Few sesting so it's a bit cramped but plenty of sushi bar seating. The seafood was so fresh, with some fish flown in from Toyosu Market in Japan. The oysters were on the smaller side but so fresh it did not taste fishy. The food was flavored so well, nothing too strong, and complemented the seafood perfectly. The softshell crab fried to perfection paired with papayas and tomatoes in a citrus-y sauce. Even the sauce topping the sake toro was delicious! Portions are on the smaller side for the price you pay but the food is so worth it! Viet and the rest of the Torii team members made sure we had an excellent customer experience. +The executive chef, Tri Pham, came by to see how we were doing and sent over a complimentary plate of sake toro (salmon belly) nigiri at the end of our meal. -As a gateway to Japanese cuisine, the menu could be more descriptive for the non-experienced diners. There may be guests who do not know what a hirame, maguro, or hamachi is. -If the menu could highlight/explain which ingredients are seasonal as well, it may educate and elevate the enjoyment of the dish. For example: kabocha squash is typically available in the cold months (October thru February), so patrons may want to order this limited special before it is not available when it gets warmer. -Also, the menu should clarify the portion sizes of the items. For example: if I order hirame (fluke) nigiri, what am I getting? Two 4oz pieces of sushi for $4? How about if I order the $19 hirame sashimi item? Is that six 2oz pieces of raw fish? Some of the "Hot" items look or sound like they could be an entree in itself. -Lastly, please reconsider some of the items that don't quite make 'Japanese' sense. For example: Shaken Beef (Vietnamese), Peking Duck (Chinese), and Broccoli Katsu could definitely be replaced with some more creative options. Maybe offer nabemono (individual clay pot) soups or udon dishes? Hot stone pots are amazing, which would definitely add some sizzle to the menu! -If y'all want to take it to the next level, maybe the menu could also include the origin or purveyor of said ingredients? For example: the menu could indicate that the wagyu comes from Stone Axe (Australia) or Snake River Farms (Idaho, USA), as well as where the fish that is flown in daily is from (actual purveyor, not just city). -We dined in right before happy hour was over and the sunlight that was shining in to the storefront windows was blinding. For my wife's birthday we took her to Torii for an amazing omakase experience. This was our first omakase experience ever. Only heard about it on social media so I was intrigued enough to take for her special day. The food and chef were amazing I will include pics of the foods we tried with the name of the dish. The ambiance wasn't anything special. We sat at a bar in front of the glass. I imagined there would be a special area for such an expensive dining experience especially since I had to make a reservation that would have cost us $200 to miss. The bill was a little more than I anticipated but we weren't really sure how long the whole dining experience was gonna last. I thought it was gonna be a set price for items the chef prepared. But this is the problem with using your imagination about an experience. All that aside I would have easily gave 5 stars if it would have been a nicer arranged seating and if the price was a little better. We definitely enjoyed every bit of the food. They prepared brussel sprouts in a way that made them so delicious and I've never liked brussel sprouts, ever!
