This place is very overpriced! The food isn't good, it's not clean either. I don't recommend it at all.

1-Star Review Title: Absolutely Disgusting -- Stay Far Away!…read more If I could give this place negative stars, I would. As someone who used to work here, I can say without hesitation: this travel center is highly disgusting. The food they serve is often old, unsanitary, and unfit for consumption. Nothing is properly cleaned -- not the food, not the prep areas, not even the coffee machines. They rarely, if ever, break them down to clean them the way they're supposed to. I've seen it firsthand, and I've known multiple people who have gotten food poisoning after eating here. What makes it worse is the horrible customer service. Ask for fresh food? They'll flat-out refuse. They want you to eat the cold, stale leftovers that have been sitting for hours. There's no regard for customer satisfaction or basic hygiene. On top of that, the environment is outright toxic, and yes, there are very clear racist attitudes present among some of the staff and management. It's unacceptable, and I'm honestly surprised this place hasn't been shut down by health inspectors already. If you care about your health, your dignity, and your money, do not stop here. Keep driving -- you'll thank yourself later.

Having grown up in a small town I'm accustomed to the small time way of life and interactions. But this diner has one of the most unkind and rudest individuals I've ever interacted with. The local Uhaul pick up and drop off is located here and I had a pick up today. When the lock box for the uhaul was not working I immediately called their customer service. After they were unable to solve the problem on their end they asked me to go inside to get help from the proprietor who runs the uhaul service. Upon entering the restaurant, and still in the phone with UHaul, I was jeered at and told I "didn't know what I was doing". I offered to have them speak with the uhaul representative who was genuinely aghast at how I was being treated by staff. He continued to berate me and say I didn't know what I was doing, I had obviously just booked this today (it was booked earlier this week and confirmed with uhaul yesterday), and snidely speaking down to me throughout the entire interaction. He refused to speak to the uhaul representative on the phone, briefly spoke with a colleague in the store about the uhaul, told me the key was in the lock box and I didn't know what I was doing, and told me to leave the store. I was visibly and audibly upset when I walked back to the lockbox where a male family member was waiting for me. Still on the phone with uhaul she placed me on hold to call the proprietor herself. Turns out, the mistake was on the proprietors end: he had not notified Uhaul that the keys were returned, had not reset the lockbox, and therefore neither Uhaul nor myself were able to access the keys. Now resolved, I walked from my car to the lockbox with the representative still in the phone. The proprietor came out of the diner to jeer at me, taunting saying "see I told you you didn't know how to use the app" and other comments insulting my intelligence. This continued until my male family member came around to the lock box and was now in line of sight of the proprietor. He immediately shifted his tone and language, saying "well alright I'm glad we could get that figured out for ya". I was so shaken I didn't even bother telling my relative what happened, but was absolutely appalled by the treatment received and rapid switch up once another man was present. Please be careful going here as a female solo traveler. This experience combined with multiple Confederate flags flying and located on the property tells me this establishment isn't for everyone. Take your business elsewhere.

For those unfamiliar, the salmon croquette made its way into Southern cooking during the…read moreDepression, when poverty and pellagra were common. The latter, a horrible disease brought on by lack of protein, ran rampant among African Americans whose diets lacked it. In the 1920s, canned salmon could be had for pennies. Add an egg and you'd have enough protein to stave off the disease for a week. The inventive cooks in the Black community found ways to make it delicious, by adding chopped onion and binding it with the salmon liquor from the can and breadcrumbs. Like so many Southern dishes that arose from need, the salmon croquette has kept the spot it earned on the soul food roster. The salmon patty was a reputed favorite of author William Faulkner who was said to enjoy them quite a lot with liquor. (Or with quite a lot of liquor, I'm unsure which.) An excellent salmon patty can be had at Greg's Breakfast Bar. According to the sign on the front door, it's the best in Alabama, and I'll not dispute it. It's what I ordered on this most recent visit and although I've not personally sampled its rivals, it would be hard to imagine a better one. When I was a kid, my own mother--who grew up during the Depression--made them every Tuesday. (Greg's may be better. Sorry, Mom.) There's no liquor served at Greg's, so I had to eat my salmon croquette with coffee. For $10 at Greg's, you too can sample the best salmon croquette in Alabama. Other local faves like Conecuh sausage line the GBB menu. Eggs and grits accompany the breakfast plates, which make up the left half of the menu. Breakfast sandwiches occupy the other half. Greg's is open early (5:30 a.m. if memory serves), and stays open until lunchtime. When my travels take me through Montgomery--as they did last week on a drive from Pensacola to Atlanta--Greg's is a quick detour off of 65 or 85. I timed my drive accordingly. The interior is classic diner, vinyl and stainless . SEC memorabilia and signed player photos decorate the place. Everybody seems to know Greg. The crowd is local. Parking limited. Makes no difference. Park on the street.

I've run many trips to Montgomery Alabama, and I'm always looking another exciting way back to Mobile, mostly because Interstate 65 is some of the most boring road you'll ever drive, unless you're a big fan of trees. So I took a right turn I didn't intend and hit US 331 and found myself in a cute town called Highland Home, with "It Don't Matter Family Restaurant". I mean, with a name like that, how could I not stop?! So I parked on that very rainy afternoon, and went inside for something to eat. Now, this is exactly what you think of when you think of southern cooking. The menu was extensive and had everything you could want. Tables were spread out across the giant floor area, covered in table cloths. There is a buffet, for those with a large appetite. Very country, quaint and quiet. So I checked in on Yelp (Pro-tip: make sure you do this upon being seated). I perused the menu, and decided on the chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and fried okra. My waitress was friendly, and quickly took the order to the kitchen, and it arrived shortly after. This was a great choice! The chicken was juicy, and the breading was seasoned perfectly, the potatoes are the real deal, and the fried okra was some of the best I've ever had. The menu and the buffet were both full of choices, so I'm looking forward to going back and seeing what other southern culinary trouble I can get into.
