This is a great Mexican restaurant in Auburn. Waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. Asked for some spicier salsa and they brought us one that had more heat and great flavor. I had the fish tacos. There were 3 and I had to take one home. Our kids ordered Fajita Quesadilla. They said they love them because it gives you cheese with all the stuff in a fajita. They looked huge and delicious. We noticed some people enjoying something that looked like a stone pig, stuffed with meat and peppers. Asked the waitress who said it was like a fajita but also had rice and other stuff in it. Looked great. Next time! read more

My first time here. I wasn't expecting authentic Mexican food which was a good thing because what we were served was nothing short of awful! Came here early around 3pm, restaurant was empty and decided to sit at the bar. My daughter ordered a Bloody Mary and I had a draft Modelo. A girl came with Chips & Salsa, the chips were typical and the salsa was tasteless and bland. I had to ask for a spicy salsa which was ok, i mixed it in with the tomato sauce "salsa". Against all judgment I ordered the Shrimp Ceviche and it came warm and with a mystery glaze sauce that's never supposed to be in freshly made Ceviche, as well as corn. The young woman behind the bar was nice and my daughter liked the Bloody Mary. That's about all I can say about this place. read more

When I walked into El Rey, the restaurant smelled and looked clean. I was greeted and seated promptly. That is where my good experience ends because the food was TRASH! So disappointed and a waste of $30. The ceviche was slopped together, served warm, and soaked in a salsa type sauce. After having authentic ceviche, this was literally the worse I've ever had. Then I ordered the pollo rancheros. The chicken was extremely thin cutlets of salty chicken covered in thick, shredded mozzarella cheese. This is probably some of the worse Mexican food I've had. I left both plates half eaten and when asked if I wanted a to-go box, I responded absolutely not. Waste of my money and time. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. This was possibly the worst dining experience of my life. The waitress was beyond rude and yelled at us for no reason. I have never seen a more incompetent staff. It is truly pathetic that a restaurant would hire someone that would spend the entire time sitting at the bar and get upset when you ask for the check. Food is average. My low rating comes from the waiter. The waiter told me that margaritas were $5.75 but when I got the bill it was $8. He said they no long serve the $5.75 margs... but this was after he served me. After I asked him about the discrepancy on the bill all he said was "the price changed." Apparently it changed within the hour I was inside? My friend also had a discrepancy on his bill but it was correct. Just not mine. Also, I tried calling and Facebook messaging earlier in the week to ask about happy hour but no one ever answered or messages back. El Rey obviously does not care about current or future business. I can name 5 better Mexican restaurants in the Auburn area. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

As the former owner/manager of restaurant, I have high standards at the places I eat. First, Carlos was an excellent server with great recommendations. The entire staff provides great service. The quality and quantity of the food was excellent, extensive menu with lots of fresh ingredients. I had the scallop tacos and my wife had the chicken mole, both were tasty. The restaurant was very clean. I highly recommend trying this place when you are in Auburn. We are definitely coming back for more. read more

Short version: I highly recommend this restaurant! Long version: Back in college (and as of this day), my friends and I would come here pretty often, and most of the time we've had a pleasurable experience. The staff has been nice, the food has been both great and extremely filling, and the margaritas have been good (when I had the room for them!). My personal go-to's are the "Hot and Spicy Burrito", or the combination fajitas. Only reason this gets 4 stars is because - and others have shared this sentiment - sometimes the service is a bit slow, even outside of the typical "rush" hours. If I could give it 0 stars, I would. We were seated at a table that had vomit on the seat and on the floor. The waitress moved us to a different table, kindly. When we ordered margaritas they had no alcohol in them. The waitress (who was amazing) gave us an extra shot on the house in our margaritas. Despite our hesitations concerning the vomit In the restaurant, we decided to order food. Our food came and had hairs in it and smelled like wet dog. We were nauseated. No one finished their food or their drinks. We will never be returning to this restaurant and encourage everyone not to dine here. I ordered a margarita and a quesadilla. My bill was 24$. Gratuity was added even though we had a small party. This restaurant is a scam and disgusting. Our waitress was wonderful... I hope she finds a place to work that deserves her. read more

Came in Today on a Saturday to a relatively empty restaurant with my spouse and two kids. We were immediately sat down at a booth and were shortly after brought our chips and salsa. But that was it. For 40 minutes we sat and waited for a server to take our drink and meal order but no one came. We were skipped over time after time as new guests came in and were served. So I left 3 bucks on the table for the chips and walked out. Would only recommend if you want garbage service. read more

On my first visit, I kind of had an allergic reaction to the ceviche (it has cucumbers, which I wasn't expecting). It was minor, really, and didn't upset me too much. My reaction to cucumbers is weak. The waitstaff were great, though. Friendly, attentive, and helpful. When I wanted to know what was in my food, they bent over backwards to find out ASAP. As for the food, the ceviche was actually the best I've had in a long time. Not good enough that I'm going to order it again, but amazingly good. This was a couple months ago and I can't exactly remember my entrée, but I do remember that it was just as impressive. Since then, I've stuck to my usual (safe) choice of cheese enchiladas and I've never been disappointed. Yes, I kept going after an allergic reaction. Yes, I think this restaurant deserves five stars. I have been looking for a good Mexican Restaurant for a while now, and have finally found it. Delicious salsa and chips for starters. The ambiance is casual, the servers are incredibly polite, and the mole poblano is very tasty. They also have a good pescatarian/somewhat-vegetarian menu, though their rice is made with chicken broth (so look out for that if you are either of the aforementioned). The venue is cozy, with great outdoor seating, and a perfect indoor temperature for these hot summer days. read more

We wanted to try the new Mexican restaurant in town so we went there for lunch today. El Rey took over the old Mugshots where we always got the philly cheese steak as it was the best we'd ever had. So, I ordered the Philly and my husband had the chicken chimichanga. Over all the food was just average. The 'sliced ribeye' was on the tough side and there weren't a lot of onions and peppers. The French fries were ample and pretty good. Husband said the chimichanga was real generic as were the beans and rice. We lived in California for a long time so our standards for Mexican food is high. We're still searching for reliably good Mexican here in the Auburn area. read more

Tonight, a friend and I dined at El Rey's for dinner. Everything started out fine, we got our chips and drinks. My tea wasn't very good, so I decided to just switch to another drink instead. No big deal. Our food arrived quickly, but after I took the first bite, I could tell that something tasted off. The meat tasted like it had been prepared several hours before, and was very poorly seasoned. The tacos themselves were also very greasy. I just could not bring myself to take another bite. I ended up having to eat half my friend's meal which was only slightly less disgusting, along with the rice and beans that came with the tacos. Even though the food was pretty bad ,with my blood sugar dropping (I'm diabetic by the way), I had to eat something. We didn't see our waiter again until he brought our tickets. When our waiter finally brought our tickets, I politely explained to him I'd only taken one bite of one of the tacos because it tasted horrible, but I did eat the beans and rice. He took my friends card, and told me to take my ticket to the front if I was displeased. I didn't understand why I would have to go the front of the restaurant to have the ticket corrected sense he was the person who rang up the tickets in the first place. He returns with my friends card, and thanks her and doesn't apologize or even thank me. As a former food service worker, I tried understand his frustration and brush off the fact that he was rude to me. I went to the front to pay for the food I ate, and the rude waiter comes up and says something in Spanish to the hostess that was helping me. I could tell by his face, and the fact that he pointed at me, that whatever he'd said was probably something negative towards me. It was very demeaning to stand in the front of the restaurant with 6-7 waiters, waitress, and hostess, standing around ease dropping and judging me for not eating the disgusting slop they had served me. I'm pretty sure they assumed I just wanted a free meal, however, if I'd wanted free food, I would have actually eaten my meal and not wasted my time eating over cooked rice and beans. I would hate to say that the waiter was racially insensitive towards me however, he handled the situation in a disgusting and dehumanizing manner and was much more courteous to my friend. I'd actually been to El Reys one other time with the same friend and our husbands and had good service. However after tonight, I'd NEVER go back to this resturant ever again and would NEVER recommend it to anyone.
