WOW. I cannot express how high quality this place is. The veggie sushi rolls are so fresh and the rice bonds well together. I forgot to take a picture of the rest of the food because i ate it so quickly due to the deliciousness. The service was from a tablet on the end of the table to order, so it was very fast. Our food came on a conveyor belt and it was so exciting seeing it come each time. I loved everything except the black sesame cheesecake. I believe it is an acquired taste although i really like black sesame, this cake wasn't my preference. But you should check it out to see if its for your taste palate. The ambience was very formal. It was around 40$ per person and we ordered quite a lot of food. The environment was super clean and the servers wore suits. Everything was formal and the servers were very sweet. [Good] Signature Oshi Trio - Oshi is the way to go here as it's their bread and butter. Super flavourful bites will have you ordering more. I wouldn't mind if I just ate Oshi sushi until I was full. Shiromi Shio Lemon Trio - The other standout were pieces with simple salt on top. It brings out the fish's natural flavour. Aburi Toro Nigiri - Premium fish with nice meltiness. [Meh] Chicken Wings - I probably should've stayed away from this but I often can't resist fried chicken. Easy skip for next time. It was pretty plain without much interest in terms of spices or taste. Scallops - Maybe it wasn't a good day for scallops because it's usually one of my favourites but here it fell short. Flavour just didn't taste right. I had them in the salt lemon form and their Michelin collab form which came at a premium $9/pc price. Both disappointed. [Worth it?] It is for a treat for sure since there are enough dishes that shine and are addictive to eat. Star taken off for the disappointing scallops and wings. Service was friendly, iPad ordering and laneway delivery mechanism is fun. There is a drawback though as we found ourselves glued to the screen picking the next bites instead of chatting. I was looking forward to try this place but oh man am I disappointed. We waited roughly 30-40 minutes for the conveyor belt seat (table of 4) on a Friday night. When we walked in, there were multiple tables that were empty. No one showed us how to order on the ipad or paid any attention to us. The food was worse than the service, the sushi rice was dry (they use brown rice) and the nori was soggy/ chewy. The plates looked like they put missing sushi pieces together to form 1 plate. The sashimi were SUPER THIN, and the uni and otoro were fishy. The portions were extremely small and definitely not worth the price. The bill came up to $170 for the 4 of us and we were still so hungry. Definitely will not be coming back. read more

This was my first time visiting Tora at Yorkdale. We went there on a Saturday at 6pm with no reservation. When we took the elevator up, there was a short queue with a hostess taking down names for tables. While in line, my friend and I went on Yelp and found out we can get on the queue there which was what we did. We confirmed with the hostess that we successfully got in the queue and that we can walk around in the mall while we wait for the text confirmation for our table. It only took a little under half hour for our table of 2 to secure a table. We were seated in the booth right by the window overlooking the inside of the mall. It was a nice and comfortable area with plenty of space between my friend and I. There were special menu items for sakura season and special collaborative Michelin items. Our server recommended their torched pressed sushi as that's what they're known for. We ordered the chirashi sakura tart for sakura season, the Michelin hef collab Atlantic salmon kurozu nanban, aburi salmon oshi set, aburi albacore tuna oshi set and the aburi Atlantic salmon. The food arrived quite quickly on the conveyor belt. Its a very nice atmosphere and experience with the conveyor belt delivery system. The torched pressed sushi is definitely something to order and I enjoyed the chirashi sakura tart. It's got interesting texture as some of the ingredients were blended up into a paste form which makes it very interesting and delicious. For next time, we will definitely get on the queue in advance but it's not a big deal if you do need to wait for a table as you can walk around in the mall while you wait. Where to go when you run out of human power and your feet ache from walking? Oh the joys of first world problems at Toronto's destination shopping mall! LOL Tora is part of the Aburi group of restaurants. You know.. the group that own Aburi Hana in Yorkville? I believe it's got one of those funny red signs with a flower on it. No not the Yelp sign! The Tire Guy from Michelin called it a star. Whatever... Tora is a sharp little restaurant situated in the posh newer area of the Yorkdale Mall and on the second floor (I believe that Cafe Landwer is still building below it). And it's pretty high tech and Covid-ish ready. Basically order on a pad, the food comes down a conveyor belt and voilà- Self Serve never look so chic! Or safe-ish?!? Some of the food here is exceptional and some are just there as fillers - much like most places. Their Edo Prime Sushi and Aburi Oshi are very good. The maki that comes with the sets are at best... passable. Their menu does change a bit here and there. One item that I really enjoyed was there Sukiyaki Wagyu - yes, there is such a thing! Delish. Though it's mostly automated, the service and attention from the staff is amazing. One of the manager is Terrance. He is an absolute delight and made sure all my visits have been the best. I have been there on biz meetings, friend meet ups, dates, and fam. It's a pleasure to get good sushi at a MALL! SHOCKING right?!!? Depending on what you order and how much of it - your wallet will be shocked too! Then again, what do you expect walking into a place like that - they do have to make up the rent cost of being there! Located at yorkdale mall, this place seems like it's always busy even to time of close. We got a plate of a few different types of sushi. The vegetable sushi was pretty interesting, it had nice flavor though probably not my favorite given I want fish when I go for sushi. Nevertheless it's pretty good and the rice is soft. The Saba sushi was delicious. The light fatiness of the fish against the rice and the flame char really brought out the flavor of the fish. Finally the roll was also quite good. Tora provides a slightly elevated sushi dining experience compared to most other sushi restaurants. It has one of the best and most efficient conveyor belt sushi processes (compared to some other restaurants I've been to that offer conveyor belt sushi). The place tends to get packed at all times of day (especially on weekends) and they don't take reservation, so it's advised that you go there early to put your name and phone # on the waitlist. They will send you a text message when a table is ready. The entrance is on the ground floor, but the restaurant is actually on the 2nd floor (you can take an elevator up or take the stairs). There are 3 types of seatings: a long table (with individual seats) with the conveyor belt right in front of you, dining area with regular big tables and conveyor belt running beside the tables, and the bar area. We chose to sit at the dining table area because the tables are bigger and more spacious (to put the multiple plates on). You order from a touch-screen tablet on the table, and you can only submit 4 individual orders at a time (but can order as many times as you like). The user interface is very easy to use, and the ordering system is quick and efficient. The screen on the tablet alerts you whenever your items are about to arrive (so you can pick them up from the conveyor belt). Food comes quite fast - usually within minutes of submitting the order. They have a large variety of items to choose from, including lots of vegetarian options (and they're all really good!). Everything tastes great, from the aburi sushi, nigiri, and chirashi bowls, to vegetarian items (all the salads, crispy brussels sprouts, and inari selection) and hot items (udon, etc.). They have a pretty good Japanese dessert selection as well, including different types of mochi and dango mixed with ice cream. We noticed that some of the dessert items on the menu say "Coming Soon", such as dorayaki with fruits and crepe cake. We plan to try these the next time we come back. read more

Tora (in Yorkdale mall) offers a high-tech dining experience with their conveyor belt laneways and tablet-based ordering systems, serving large selections of premium flame-seared Aburi sushi, pressed (oshi) sushi, and EdoPrime nigiri! I didn't realize that Tora gets their fish from Toyosu Japan so my expectations definitely went up a notch. They are known for their Aburi so that was definitely must tries. We also grabbed a bunch of other nigiris and all did not disappoint. The items I probably wouldn't reorder are the Michelin star chef collab and the black sesame cheesecake. The collab piece was 2 pieces of cooked salmon (albeit overcooked) with a bunch of toppings that just didn't have the wow factor. The black sesame cheesecake, though best seller I felt was dry and the crumbled crackers were very odd and didn't pair well with it. They don't take reservations so it's waitlist only in person (couldn't do it on Yelp). I wasn't too bothered by that because the line moved quickly and you get to get some more shopping in before your meal :) Staff were attentive, explained everything well to you and we didn't have to ask for more water, they noticed and replenished. Went here on my birthday as a little celebration with my fiance. We didn't know much about it other than it being in the mall and that it was a conveyer belt sushi restaurant that was slightly pricy. Honestly, was not disappointed at all. You make small orders in batches on an ipad and wait for them to come to you on the conveyor belt. The iPad also let's you know what is coming when it is coming down to you from the kitchen. The waiters were extremely polite and kept our table clean. Overall I didn't think this place was worth the high price tag. There are some high quality fish options but I found most of the items to be just okay and feel like you can get the same quality elsewhere. The portions are small and found that I had to order a lot to be full. None of the dishes really stood out to me. The main issue I had with this place is so how dirty everything was - especially the washrooms and I came just before peak dinner time. It felt like nothing was cleaned properly and took a while for servers to help out when needed. We arrive d around 12:00 PM on a Saturday, and there was a small line up I in front of the door, but the line when quickly. The main reason for the line up was because you need to use an elevator to get to the restaurant on the second floor, so, they were limiting how many people could ride up. Visited this modern Japanese restaurant inside Yorkdale Shopping Center the night before dine-in is no longer permitted due to covid restrictions. They're a sister restaurant to Miku which I've always had a great experience at. Tora is slightly different in food options and delivery methods. The interior design is modern, nice and clean. You check in with the hostess at ground level then take the elevator up to the second floor. There are window seats facing the outside parking lot and also window seating facing the inside of the mall as well. If you sit beside the conveyor belt your food is delivered by the belt after you place your order via their iPad. Their service was lovely, well explained and hospitable. The food items could be ordered via the iPad but the alcohol would be through a server. I personally found the sake selection too small, too simple and not to my liking. I did also order Asahi Black which is a bit rare at local Japanese restaurants. By the time we were able to get seated (we were 15th in the Yelp wait list) it was quite late. A lot of the food items were sold out. Even ones that were available on the iPad which we placed the order already, the server came back to tell us they're sold out. By 9:17pm they came to tell us 9:30pm will be the last call and the iPad will just shut off. The food came basically all at once instead of in groups of 4 as thought. I felt a bit rushed. Came here tonight with no reservation just after 8pm and I was seated immediately at a high table seating. Service - wasn't good at all, nobody came and checked up on us whether food was good or even bothered to tell us how to order. Even though, we mentioned it was our first time here. I had to wave a server down to tell him that I placed an order but the iPad didn't show it and would it be a duplicated if I tried again. His answer was simply ... just place another other. I would but, the problems was that I wasn't sure if I would get charged for both if I did just because the iPad didn't show it and the order did go through. The unagi is JUST SKIN, I found this outrageous that that can just serve me SKIN for $13 for 4 pieces. The only reason why I gave it a 2 star was because the sauce was good and rice. This is a hidden gem of a place. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor and an elevator is needed to get there. We had to wait close to an hour before getting seated inside so we just spent the time looking around the mall. What immediately becomes evident is that the place is well kept and looks fancy. The attendants and servers were also very well trained and courteous. There is usually a conveyor that brings you the food order, but our group decided on being seated in one of the higher tables by the windows. Our food orders were instead just brought in to the table like normal. A small gripe I have about the facilities is that their washroom toilets still has the push lever to flush and not the automatic sensors or at least a button press. It feels like such a let down considering the branding of the rest of the place is well thought out. The food taste and presentation is done well. Their ebi fritters and salt & pepper chicken wings were orders you can never go wrong with. Something I did not like is the food serving time is inconsistent. Some of the orders we placed took too long that I had to mention it right now as an inconvenience. Last thing I want to talk about is the cost and value of dining here. Our bill with tip split evenly per diner came to about $29 which can be in the range of All You Can Eat Sushi places. You can have a lot more serving at the AYCE fore sure, but you are trading that to get a better ambience and dining experience here at TORA. read more

The star of the nigiri was actually the rice, not the fish. Overpriced for what you get, but I wouldn't mind coming here once in a blue moon. My girlfriend and I came on a Saturday afternoon, opting to get takeout instead of a sitdown. (Pro tip: if you're looking for a sitdown, make sure to get on the Yelp waitlist or come in advance. TORA does not take reservations and the weekend dinner rush begins at 5pm). We got an order of the Shiromi Trio, Chef's Daily Selection, Shiromi Salt Lemon Trio, Signature Salt Lemon Trio and loved all the nigiri offerings. If you look closely, you'll notice a slight red tinge to TORA's sushi rice compared to others - a product of their red sake vinegar seasoning. We hadn't seen this before and loved the sweeter, more fullsome taste brought to each nigiri. Unfortunately, we didn't think the nigiri were made with the most finesse. At times, it felt like a slice of sashimi was slapped onto the rice without any care; a direct contrast to the delicate sushi-making process we've come to appreciate. With a slight nudge, the fish would separate from the rice - uh oh! The Shiromi Salt Lemon offerings were amongst our favourite. The slightly salty, slightly acidic flavour actually help the taste of the fish pop! For takeout, TORA does provide a wedge of lemon so you can adjust the amount of lemon juice to taste. However, I do recommend eating this ASAP since the salt sitting atop the sushi will draw any moisture out of the fish if left alone. If you're a scallop and prawn lover like us, definitely get the Signature Salt Lemon Trio - absolutely divine and sweet. No faults there. All-in-all, TORA offers fresh and delicious sushi with a twist. You might break the bank if you're a big eater and want to try everything, but it's definitely worth a try. We'll come back for the Aburi next time, which I firmly believe should be eaten on premises due to the seared fish. read more

Went to Tora for a birthday dinner on a Tuesday night. We were seated quickly around 6pm. This restaurant is unique in that you order from an electronic device and the food arrives via conveyor belt right to your table. Unfortunately, the device that you order from is stationary on the table so you can't move it to allow others to view the menu. The person closest to where the device is mounted is the only one that can order and scroll through the menu. You can only order 4 dishes at a time. You must submit before you can order additional dishes. It took awhile for the food to arrive. I think this place is overrated and over priced. The portions were very small. The taste of the food and presentation was mediocre. Didn't think it was worth the price. The bathroom was filthy and for a place that charges a lot for sushi this was unacceptable. read more

Love Kaiten sushi restaurants! This one is a little bit fancier than the conveyor belt sushi places in Japan. I've had this place on my list to try for quite a while and I was so excited that I was finally here. It has a great location on the 2nd floor away from all the noise from the mall. You might have to wait as the restaurant is ensuring the 6ft social distancing by only sitting customers at every other booth. We came at around 2pm for a late lunch so we didn't have to wait but it was close to reaching its capacity. I knew that since this place was associated with Miku, it must be good. It truly met my expectations...the food was spectacular. Our favourite dishes out of the 14 dishes were the Aburi Salmon, Mini Chirashi, Albacore tuna sushi, Crispy Brussels sprouts and the black sesame cheesecake. The prices were reasonable considering that it's high quality sushi. We just went a little overboard with ordering so it ended up being an expensive meal. It was totally worth it! Came back and for the third time and the place is still ok but needs work in a few areas. Premium sushi like o-toro are ok as was Wagyu. But I felt ripped off for the uni chiriashi which was a bit of uni in a tiny bowl on top of two sushi rice beds. Udons we're tiny but delicious and when I ordered the wings there were two decent sized ones and a third that would have belonged to a quail. Sushi construction is weak. They fall apart too easily. What has happened to my favourite spot?!!? I was shocked and alarmed at my last 2 visits. Back in July, I came with a friend as I had many times before and raved about this place. However, this time I noticed the portions for everything were suspiciously smaller. The udon had mystery pork rather than substantial pork chunks as they did in the past. The torched sushis also looked thinner and the fish topped on it was also very thin. Bummed out I flagged the staff and asked her what was going on - I mean know times are tough but wouldn't it make more sense to just increase the price and serve decent portions as they once did. She said would pass the message on to management. Fast forward to last week. I went there again as this is my go to place. If I am ever in the area, I will take out (not anymore since they charged me extra for every little thing the last time I did take out so I only dine in now) or dine in. I noticed the menu was completely revamped, many of my fav combos were no longer on the list and the portions were just as small even though they raised the prices on everything on the menu. I support small businesses having to raise prices and I even encouraged it but can't help feeling scammed that not only was the price increased but our portions were reduced as well. Felt a bit like cheap trickery. Unfortunately, I will not need to find a new spot because I can't justify this type of thinking. UPDATE REVIEW: 5 STARS -TO- 3 STARS Lowered my rating due to loss of quality and sizeable plates. Just like other reviews have mentioned the size and quality of TORA have dropped significantly. Not to mention almost half the menu is "coming soon" a huge annoyance as how do you only have half a menu available?!? Complete difference to whats said was offered online. The Prices increase, Quality Difference, & Smaller Portions, are just a huge jab to returning customers. The chopped scallop roll was more of a minced scallop roll, a prechewed version of what once a fan favourite. It's understandable that perhaps you added the crunchy chop scallop which features a more finer chop but ontop of a Sushi vs Maki is huge different on playing with the textures. It was also only HALF FULL In the Sushi. The cuts of fish texture and freshness was strange, what once was a sweet freshness was dull and unappealing. Ie Sweet Shrimp Maki. The Kaisen Don, was such a disappointment with salmon roe and salmon priced at almost 6.25 a plate doesnt even feature the correct fish on the menu photo!! It was just salmon although beautiful was the size of a golf ball and very hard to eat without a spoon. Salmon Sashimi slices were probably 1/8 Inch slices, and should of gone ontop of Sushi and not been Sashimi Cuts. The new menu items just feel like taking short cuts at using cheaper ways to make lower quality fish seem fancier to sell. Yellowtail Crudo 9.25, does not even taste good and would of been better if they had just left it as is. (Do they even try the dishes they created?) The menu itself is a cluster f*ck, we spent more time looking at "coming soon" on the menu and flipping back and forth because the menu had unnecessarily amount of pages, and yet most of everything were empty. The service as usual was good, and the ambiance is always a plus with the food. Overall my experience was very poor, I did communicate with the waitress at the end of the meal and she let us know she will bring the notes to management. We were shocked when we didn't need a reservation on a Sunday night but it's clear the public has caught on to Tora. Unfortunately with the bad taste in my mouth I'll have to see Tora again, but not in the near future. read more
