I have to shout out Liz, who has been nothing short of exceptional. She never makes it feel like a sale. Instead, it feels like you're going home with treasure, objects meant to be used, lived with, and loved. She is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and charismatic. She's absolutely got it. Ever since I discovered Topdrawer on Union Street a couple of years ago, it has become one of my favorite day off destinations. Selection was impressive here - most of the things I looked at were Japanese, and very pretty to look at. I'd love to whip out one those fabulous Japanese lighters for instance, but they cost three times as much as a good zippo, so perhaps not. I unfortunately had a poor experience at Topdrawer and will not buy anything from them again. If you order things online, you can't return them at a store, which is such a terrible consumer experience. And, they don't pay for free return shipping. I actually LOST money on a purchase here because I was not happy with an item and had to return it. It also seems like no one is trained on these processes (online customer service vs. in-store employees) and I would get mixed information, wasting my time and creating even more hassle. read more

This store is a dream to browse and find stationary and fun useful things to add to your life that are stylish, practical, efficient and helpful. Oh my goodness, I would come here for the pens alone! I came to the store bc I happened to park right in front of it and the rainbow of pens lured me in. This is the type of store where you spend money on items you think you need but it's really bc you want it. So many Knick-knacks and things you didn't realize you needed until you walk into this store. I bought a felt pen, not just any felt pen, but an erasable felt pen because it's erasable. If you're looking for comfy, and quality house slippers I would come here. They come in a huge assortment of colors and patters, not your mother's isotoners lol. Some cute stuff, but watch out. They do tacky marketing cons, almost got me for $10. For example, I bought a bunch of pencils that were a great deal, but at the register, they were no longer a dollar each, they were 2.29! When I asked her, if they were a dollar, she said oh yes, and immediate pressed the discount button and charged me 1.15 for them. Yes, I bought a $37 canteen there. But, the whole thing felt gross, and as nice as the lady was, she was participating in a con. I'm not sure who owns this place, but it's not someone with scruples. It's gross and unethical. It's not how America works. They said they would not change the sign and had no intention to change it. It was out of their control. read more

A must visit for those who like Japanese stationery or macaron erasers. Itoya Topdrawer feels like an older, more adult version of Maido. While IT carries cute things, the designs tend to be more understated and they don't have a large section devoted to San X character merchandise or a large number of pens. There are fewer pens here but they tend to be nicer (including fountain pens). The leather desk accessories and Kolo photo albums come in a variety of colors. They carry a wide variety of elegant patterned furoshiki, the Japanese fabric wrapping cloth. I also spotted wonderful greeting cards, notebooks of all shapes and sizes, planners, toys, puzzles, Tokyo Milk cologne, origami paper, printed tape, tape dispensers, jewelry, etc. The cupcake and macaron erasers are $1 each. She even called the other store in San Francisco to check for availability and called me back right back with the information. Awesome shop, but TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTING customer service. I purchased a cute tote bag there a week ago and paid cash. I later spoke to my sister, for whom the bag was going to be a gift, and found out she already owns something very similar. I tried to return the bag this morning and was told I couldn't, since they didn't have enough cash in the drawer to give me. Uhhhh WHAT? You don't keep a measly $35 in your register???? I said that was not acceptable and then the manager offered to give me store credit, which...no. If I paid in cash, I would prefer cash back. There is no policy anywhere in the store indicating that they cannot refund cash purchases. Neither employee seemed the least bit apologetic whatsoever about the situation. I ended up keeping the bag and maybe I'll attempt to return it AGAIN next time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

There is a special place in my heart for Japanese products, I can't get enough of them. Went gift shopping here and found just what I was looking for (a handsome pen and pen case). The staff was helpful in guiding me and offered to gift wrap my purchases. When I asked if they could also wrap a book I purchased next door... they not only said sure, but did it for free. I picked up some cards; and thought some of their travel items which pretty nifty ideas. I liked the last piece of cloth which is a convertible bag. I don't remember what it is called, but the shopkeepers showed me a whole book of bags to convert the piece of cloth into. read more

They had the coolest stuff- erasers that looked like mini macarons, an Artifact Uprising booth on display and a computer where you could make your own, a wall of cute cards (including lots of Rifle Paper!) and a whole wall of pens/notebooks/notepads/school supply heaven. I placed an online order for a travel journal around thanksgiving and never received it. I called up the Boston store and was given amazing customer service. I was called back by a woman named Lauren who was super apologetic and the company took full responsibility for the error. They then overnighted me my journal even though I told them not to as the cost of shipping was probably more than the journal cost them. Inside the box was a very nice handwritten note from Rafael, once again apologizing. He also included a nice gift as a gesture of appreciation. I tell you, it's customer service like this that restores my faith in humanity. There are two places on Union Street that absolutely rock. The first is The Pink Bunny and the second is Itoya Topdrawer. Itoya Topdrawer has some of the greatest merchandise in San Francisco. The staff is super nice, really great to talk to, and pretty darn funny. I would highly recommend making a trip to The Pink Bunny for a great set of lingerie then taking a trip over to Itoya Topdrawer and buy some "get out of town" gear. I was so excited to learn that Itoya has opened its first store in the US. This location is very tiny, so don't expect to find anything close to the six levels of amazing-ness that is in Tokyo. That being said, they have a very nice selection of beautiful Japanese traditional textiles that can be used as decorations, napkins, bags, etc. Their leather goods are also lovely, but quite pricey compared to what you could get them for in Tokyo. Lots of beautiful cards, although I felt like much of their inventory focused on US makers and not Japanese companies. Customer service was friendly and helpful, but not overbearing. Wonderful shop! So many unique gifts from travel aids to reading glasses to stationary and wonderful variety of pens. Check out the great reversible/fold-able slippers from Japan. The shop is well organized and the assortment of practical, modern Japanese items is alluring. They also have things from Denmark, USA, Italy - and all seem so well made. The sales people were also delightful. One small caution, don't buy the Swedish Gingersnaps - they have gone stale - even with an acceptable "use by" date. Adorable Japanese boutique. Apparently they have a huge store in Ginza in Japan, but this is their flagship US store. I am in love. I wandered in here randomly and am so glad that I did. I have been looking for my brown Midori leather-bound passport case for traveling and found it here. It was cheaper than any of the online sites I found it on too! Score! The employees were very helpful. They opened up packages to let me look at other colors. There are boundless gift ideas in here (colorful macaron erasers, cards, staple-less staplers, fancy pens, Japanese textiles, sparklers). Cannot wait to come back here. This store has the most beautiful selection of stationery and writing accessories. Most of the pens and journals are imported, which means you'll see brands you didn't even know of. The store isn't overwhelmingly crowded with merchandise either- which is nice. Too bad it's a bit expensive- but honestly, the prices are fair for the quality you're getting. read more
