I am disgusted by Maria's so-called "training" methods. Maria, who runs Top Performance Dog Training, looked after our boy for 4.5 weeks! Once we were able to pick him up during her demo, it was clear something was not right! Our boy didn't fully respond to her commands, Maria's reaction shocked me, she looked so frustrated with him. She was rough, kneeing him and yanking on his leash with excessive force! During those 30 minutes that she was handling him I saw how our poor boy was terrified, his tail was in between his legs, and he kept looking at me like he wanted out. Worse, his eyes looked tired and sad, like he'd been through a lot! I just wanted to cry and get my boy out of there as quick as possible. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It felt like she didn't care about our boy's well-being at all. And if this is how she acts when owners are around, what does she do behind closed doors?!!! On top of all of that, Maria didn't even address the issues we asked for help with, it seems all she cared about was "crate training" him. But that's not what we wanted! We wanted real help with his problems, not just basic commands he already knew. I'm writing this review to warn others. Maria's methods are harmful, and she doesn't listen to what owners want. If I had known that she uses force, violence and fear to "train" dogs I would have never submitted my boy to that traumatic experience. We took our 6 month old Great Dane (Scooby) to be trained at Top Performance Dog Training back in May of 2019. We had gotten to the point where controlling Scooby and walking him was next to impossible. He is the sweetest dog; however, his large size made dealing with him challenging. We had a baby 5 weeks ago and we wanted to make sure that Scooby was more controllable before the baby arrived. We went to Maria's house (Top Performance Dog Training) to have an initial consultation to train our puppy. Upon entering Maria's house we got hit with a high pet urine smell, it was so gross that I almost ran out of there. In her living room she had 3 doggies in crates and as we walked by the doggies started barking and Maria yelled at them like a crazy person telling them to shut up, that was definitely a very bad first impression!! Another thing I noticed right away is that when we were talking to her she was all over the place, repeating herself over and over with the same questions even after we kept answering her, this was sooo frustrating. We brought up a few concerns about our puppy if she could help teach him not to jump on people, dig holes and other things and she kept saying "well I can't guarantee that" and just kept giving us weird answers. I didn't feel comfortable signing the contract there so we told her we were going to discuss and get back to her. When I got home I decided to go to her website and do a little more research on her and her practice, it turns out that all the "certifications" she shows on her website are out of date and is not active on any of them! Huge red flag! After all of these red flags we decided to research other trainers, Maria did not inspire the trust needed to leave our puppy in her care. read more

Soy Sauce is a totally sweet loving dog, but was not responsive to the training classes at our local pet store. We were not able to take him with us anywhere without major struggles. Maria started her training program with him on December 2, 2022, and after 3 weeks of training, and 3 months after training we are SO HAPPY with the results! We can take him anywhere on a loose leash, responding to both verbal and hand signals, insuring good behavior where ever we might be. I would not recommend Maria for dog training. We reviewed previous comments posted on Yelp. The comments we found were positive and we decided to put our dogs in her care. We have two dogs, a German Shepherd 8 months old and a 7 month Aussie. We paid a large amount for each of them to be board and trained for 3 weeks. Both dogs had a tight bond with one another prior to training and were very happy and loving dogs. We had requested training with basic commands and especially wanted to have them trained to come when called (recall) and to not jump on people. I had told Maria that I did not want the dogs kept in a kennel all day and that they needed to play together each day so that they kept their relationship. When we picked our dogs up from training we were very disappointed. Both dogs had lost weight and appeared traumatized from their time in her home. They were depressed and their spirits were broken. It appears that they were both kept in their crates most of the time and were not given a lot of activity. Maria had told me that she used positive reinforcement with training when I booked with her, but I did not see this when she demonstrated the dogs' response to the basic commands. Her training techniques were not affective with our dogs. She was more negative (disciplinarian) than a positive reinforcer. When we were putting our dogs into the car to take them home our Aussie attacked the German Shepherd. Maria told us that she didn't know why this happened. We did not have this problem with either dog before. The bond that they had prior to training was destroyed during the time under her care. Since bringing them home, they have continued to visciously fight when they come into contact with one another. They are not following the few training commands that they were taught. They do not come when called and they are still jumping on people. For what we paid, we did not get the results we were expecting. Our dogs are worse off now than before they began training. We are trying to repair their relationship and are hoping that they will come together but it's created tremendous stress for us. I have notified Maria that I could not write a positive review about her training. I would encourage anyone looking for a trainer to look for someone who uses more positive reinforcement techniques. I would not recommend Top Performance Training to anyone. The cost for the training is exorbitant for what is provided. We are going to end up training our dogs ourselves. read more
