I have worked with one other dog trainer before, but he was not an Animal Behaviorist and I can certainly tell the difference! I was looking specifically for an animal behavorist because my dog, Teddy, was showing some aggressive tendencies that seemed to come out of nowhere, and I didn't know why or how to get through to him. Teddy was not listening to previous training methods I have learned. He was doing everything you don't want your dog to do--barking at other dogs and people, pulling on leash, and dragging you to wherever he wanted to go. He is also a strong dog at 65 lbs! Our puppy was only 10 weeks when we started looking for a trainer. Since we are first time dog owners, we were looking for someone that will be patient with both the owners and our high energetic puppy. Manny seems like a very kind person, I have picked up a handful of tips to use in the future, and, with consistency, I'm sure my dog will progress further. However, I feel like spent a lot of money for not much return. I don't have much and was hoping this splurge investment would clear some very difficult behaviors, but it has not. A heavy focus is put on the owner doing the training which would be fine if it weren't so expensive for so little of the trainer's time. Sessions are not hourly and instead based on how long you go until the dog seems tired to Manny. All of that is fine, but a session ends up being around 30min (don't think ever more than 45) long and that works out to over $300/hour which is very expensive and not even Manny doing the training the whole time. Sounds like this structure works for others, but these sessions didn't feel specialized. It's more of a "here's what I teach" approach taught in 4 ($700) or 8 ($1400) sessions and paid up front with no refunds (I would ask for at least a partial refund if I felt it'd go somewhere) I would have appreciated more focus on what I wanted to work on and more time with Manny doing the training (and not me). Many sessions started with me reminding what we have and haven't learned. With this amount of $$$ I would expect a detailed schedule and plan. My dog does sit a bit more reliably, for example, but other behaviors like stopping jumping or lying down are not strong and do not respond to the training (not even in session). I actually heard about Manny through my sister who had him for her dog. Her dog is well trained, so I thought it would be worth the shot. I also read the Yelp reviews about him and had talked to him on the phone prior to booking him. He had went to animal behavior school and is certified for dog training. I personally preferred this, especially when someone else is around my baby (dog). Prices are kind of high, $450 for 4 sessions that last 45 minutes. It can be less if your dog is burnt out too. I was kind of bummed how the first session takes a lot of time signing papers and getting to know how the remainder of the sessions will be. With Manny, the training is really with the dog owners. He demonstrates how you work with your dog. Him with your dog first. Then guides you and corrects you when it's time for you to practice with your dog. He's very straight to the point. He likes to start with the basics and then advances. If your dog forgets then you start at the beginning and progress. Don't worry. This didn't delay our sessions on what we learned. Within the 4 lessons my baby learned sit, stay, heel, leave it, and wait. This was because I followed Mannys directions and practiced it at home EVERYDAY. I even taught my family members who are surrounded by her so that it can be consistent. Personally, I wished the signing the papers and talking about the training could be done before the timer starts. Perhaps one more thing could be taught during that time. Manny also provides papers and lists on what would be helpful for teaching your dog. It's a great resource to have in hand for future use. He gives a list of items to purchase for training. It can be overwhelming at first, but they are helpful. I recommend KEEPING YOUR RECEIPTS so you can return the items. Some of the things we didn't use or fit, so I returned them. He works M-F from the early afternoon to the evening. He does not work weekends. I'd say around 12-6. But I'd confirm with him. He is very quick to respond to calls and text messages. I really appreciate the fact that he is open to giving advice during and even after we completed our training. I like how he gives a cute certificate of completion to your baby after. He also is always on time and drives to your location too. He does request every customer to write a Yelp review for him. This is because he only uses Yelp for outreach to clientele. My review is authentic and based from my experience. My dog is not 100% trained, however I do feel I received the appropriate tools from Manny for a strong foundation. I also admire and appreciate his efforts to be there for advice even after our completion. Like I mentioned that my sister had used him for her dog training a a year ago, and he even offered advice to her after a year. In addition, he was respectful to me and treated my dog good. Yes, he uses a prong collar (only for certain dog behaviors). I was recommended to Manny by family. And I am very disappointed with his lack of professionalism. When we spoke via phone he stated a price, when he got to my house he stated a different price, his excuse was that he forgot that he increased prices at the beginning of the year. When Manny initially meet my dog (when he came to pick up the money) he said that she would have to train in a prong collar. She was 6 month old lab full of energy, but I didn't feel that it was necessary, but I went through with it because he was the expert here. The first session went ok, the second session my dog did not seem comfortable at all. She did not want to walk away from me when Manny had her on the leash. I was shocked by that, because my dog loves everyone. The beginning of that second session made a comment about religion, I let it slide, because he was just sharing his thoughts which is ok. What was not ok was when at the end of the session he was trying to instill his religion, belittling my beliefs, texting me at 10PM that evening continuing to instill his beliefs on mine, and then following my personal Instagram account. At this point I did not feel comfortable attending another session with him and kindly asked for a refund and stated why I was ending training with him. I did not get my refund back, which at this point doesn't matter anymore, because I found another trainer that was able to help me train my dog WITHOUT a prong collar and she is still her loving self with manners.
