What I do remember is how freaking awkward it felt. When I go out to eat, get my hair done, or grab a coffee...I know these things are a part of an industry that relies on tips. When I have service guys over to my house (new homeowner, so it's more common than I'd like) I often cash tip a $20 or more depending on the work and time. But to be asked to tip 20% on $500 or $1000 dollars unexpectedly--do that math. Ugh. The guys were great and their work was solid. It's not on them for a crappy ending to the service call. If Great Lakes would have mentioned their tipping expectation in advance, like when I scheduled or when they sent a confirmation, it would have been a better experience. Sharing so you don't feel caught off guard the way I was.

Less than a year ago, they sold and installed a brand-new sump pump for my family. It has already failed. When it gave out on a Tuesday afternoon, they refused to respond that day and scheduled us for the following morning instead. To protect our home, we did the prep work before the tech arrived: clearing the water, draining the pit, and removing the broken pump out from below the check valve. The technician was polite and confirmed the pump failed under warranty. While the replacement part was free, I was shocked to receive a $400.00 labor bill for a 45-minute visit. I left a message with the office regarding this excessive charge but have received no follow-up. It is completely unacceptable to sell a customer a faulty product, take zero accountability when it breaks in under a year, and then charge a massive labor fee to swap it out. Their business model ensures the customer bears all the financial risk for their poor product reliability. Proceed with caution if you use them.
