Terrible experience with Dr. David Chuywei's office... Complete lack of communication/clarity on what is needed for the crown imprints, lab unable to produce the crowns based on the 3D scans, delays after delays, stuck now in the process of reversing the insurance claim for which they charged me double the expected/insured price and for a service that was never provided, etc... Asked for and scheduled a phone call with Dr. David Chuywei to resolve the situation, but someone else called me instead, which was very disrespectful and completely useless. Moreover, their insurance coordinator staff is incompetent and rude, so take my advice on this and stay away, take your business elsewhere! He is patient, friendly, will listen to your concerns/questions and make sure that he gives you all the information that you need. I go on a regular basis for a routine checkup and cleaning. I really like Toothspa, the whole staff is very attentive, professional, and patient centered. They always see me promptly whenever I have an issue with my teeth. I had a crown put in recently as I had a tooth that was chipped due to an accident almost 13 years ago... I had a filling on it (how it didn't fall out earlier is beyond me..) but it eventually did. The tooth had to be smoothed out, once that happened I had a lot of sensitivity- root canal was the outcome. I was happy to be referred to an endodontist colleague of Dr. David. Dr. David put the crown in about a week later. Everything was cool then I started having soreness, I waited to see if it went away, but it didn't. Anyway, long story short- called Toothspa was seen the next day very quickly did an X-ray, all was ok! It seems that my clenching is causing stress on the tendons in the tooth. Nice and clean office. But as other posts have pointed it out, the insurance staff needs much more improvement. They have messed up with my insurance multiple times. First time, they did not check my previous dental history, and perform a procedure that is not covered within the time limit. It was ~$100 extra out of pocket which doubles the upfront cost. They offered to waive the cost, and I decide to give them another chance. Then they scheduled my next regular clean and check. And I noticed that it was within 6 month of my last clean (which was performed at Tooth Spa). We rescheduled it in the end. However if I did not catch it, I would possibly pay the whole thing out of my pocket. From that time, they would do a preauthorize on my procedures to avoid unexpected cost, which is fine to me. But things still go wrong. The insurance staff told me one of my recommended procedure is covered by my insurance, and is already preauthorized. I would only need to pay 10%. However, I know that is not covered by my insurance, and I asked them to double check. And they found out it would not be covered. If I just accept what I was told, it is going to be another ~$400 extra bill. After my second regular clean with them, I received another bill. I asked why a regular clean would incur extra cost, they said some of the imaging is not covered by my insurance any more. And the insurance company did not mention it when they called it last year. This time, the amount was tens of dollars, so I would not bother to argue and just pay for it. Moreover, they accidentally send someone else's bill to me (which is not professional itself). That person paid $300 upfront, and now is asked for another $1500. People make mistake, I understand that. But if the same kind of issue happen again and again, it is a systematic issue. Dr Grace does want to come across as a doctor who cares for her patients - but based on my years of experience with dentists, I can say that she is not as experienced as some of the other dentists in Sunnyvale. She is probably good for a small filling/ cleaning procedure, but for complex procedures - I really wouldn't recommend her. She had me re-work two of my large fillings - when they were really not bothering me. And I was left in immense pain in one of them - which finally ended up in a root canal. The other one has become immensely sensitive now. Both of these were in better shape before I had got them treated. The other thing that really bothered me was that she did not push out my treatment even after I told her that I am going to be on vacation. So I had to spend part of my vacation in immense tooth pain. read more

This review is long overdue. I have been a patient here (doctor David and Joan) past 4 years and my experience hasn't been anything short of great! The staff and doctors are incredibly professional, respectful, kind, friendly, and competent. I always look forward to going to my appointments. They have always given me the advice beneficial to me and not for their financial advantage. That is huge! I honestly cant recommend them enough. I live 20 miles away ( I work nearby) but I am still coming back here for my dental work. And recently my husband and my son have also switched to their care. We are very happy to be in their hands. I like to especially point out their recent precautions regarding COVID 19. They have gone above and beyond. They have turned an inherently high risk environment to an extremely low risk environment by their use of air vacuum system, air purifiers in every corner, extreme PPE measures and frequent sensitization of everything. I just can't shake the feeling that they see me as an ATM machine they're entitled to make HUGE withdrawals from regardless of how I feel about it. PROs: Friendly people. Nice decor. Prompt appointments. CONs: Proposed overblown work plan that didn't take into consideration my desires. Over charged their original estimate by 300% when I went to pick up another item. DETAILS: I originally picked this dentist because of very positive reviews that had been written elsewhere. A running theme was that Dr. Grace explains everything she is doing and proposing, so that sounded good to me. I need information. I found she does indeed explain in great detail the work she is proposing (a good thing), but she doesn't take the time to listen to what the patient actually wants to do (a bad thing). I asked for a bare minimum solution to a problem I have, and she instead proposed a HUGE plan that included options I specifically said I was unwilling to consider in the previous visit. She hadn't heard me at all. In the meantime, I opted for a retainer to keep the teeth in place until I found a solution that worked for me. She quoted a price for the retainer that I was willing to pay for a temporary fix. When I went back to get the retainer, they charged me 3 times what they had quoted. I was stunned. I just stammered, "umm...that was more than I was expecting". They asked me what they had quoted me. I couldn't remember exactly, but I said I KNEW it wasn't that much -- I never would have agreed to it. We played chicken for a while until I said I would leave the retainer with them and go check my notes at home. Only then did they find the original quote in the records of my previous visit. They honored the original quote which was 1/3 what they were trying to charge me. I paid up, left and haven't been back since. I'll be the first to admit, it might just be a bad fit for me. She had plenty of great reviews on a dental site, but probably from people who aren't engaged in their own treatment and will just go ahead with whatever the dentist recommends and are just happy to have it explained. read more

OK dentist if all you need is check-ups. They have a clean office, friendly staff, very gentle cleanings by their hygienists and doctor, massage chairs, and serene atmosphere. The reason I docked them two stars however is because they asked for me to do a deep cleaning and scared the crap out of me by saying my teeth were degrading and made it sound like it would get incredibly bad if I didn't treat it. I went ahead with the deep scaling cleaning and about a month later I got multiple letters from my insurance saying that there was not enough proof of degradation and the procedure would not be covered. I'm not exactly comfortable with this sort of practice of super preventative procedures such that even my insurance won't want to cover the procedure, and I would like to inform others that they should be more informed before agreeing to procedures from this dentist. read more

My husband supposedly had a cavity and Dr. Grace attempted to fill it. Before she could complete the procedure, she told my husband that he would need a root canal instead. We decided to get a second opinion and thankfully found Dr. Michael Lambert who received all of my husband's x-rays and after reviewing them, told us that Dr. Grace had unnecessarily drilled in so deep into his tooth that it may be too late to save the nerve in his tooth. He advised us to give it some time to heal and thankfully it did. Dr. Lambert proceeded to finish the filling. We have been going to Dr. Lambert for the past three years, and he has not once 'discovered' another cavity from either of us. I worry about the honesty and integrity of dentists these days after learning from my husband's experience. And this is what a respectable dentist has written: "I'm scared for our profession. Do you trust your dentist? Do you think that they're money grubbing liars out to make a quick buck? It's so much about getting a second opinion right now. It's about distrust. And it's about the dentist taking advantage of someone who doesn't know any better. I don't know what our profession is going to look like in ten years. I have had the same experience as Dave L. The ambiance at the Tooth Spa is very nice: salt water aquariums, large LCD TV's with dental animations, generally nice staff and a clean office. The great thing about the dentist is that she takes the time to explain all the details of the work she does beforehand. She also does an AMAZING job with her fillings (truly a work of art on my front tooth!). However, I was also made to feel like an ATM; she doesn't place her attention on the issues that I was presenting her, instead she appears to have her own agenda. In one instance, for tooth sensitivity resulting from a receding gum line on a molar, she applied a filling but when the sensitivity got worse after the procedure, she offered to sell me prescription strength sensitivity toothpaste at $15/pop and said I will need to brush with this daily from now on. What really got me is that over the course of two years, the record they keep of "cavities" on my teeth exploded all of which were visible only via X-ray. When I consistently declined work on these areas, she even had me sign a waiver of responsibility in the event these areas got worse. WHAT?! I'm glad I'm not a hypochondriac... Over the course of 20 years, I've had countless dentists tell me I've had cavities on my molars, countless dentists also tell me I don't, and a few that tell me that the supposed cavities were just stains. I've never had them filled and I've never had any issues with them. I've also never had a dentist implement a scare tactic as aggressive as this office. read more

Walk into the dentist chair and LCD panels surround you and the doctor comes in to greet you and brief you on the procedure they are about to perform on you. I had a horrible experience at Tooth Spa and the pain continues till date. During my annual dental exam, the dentist found several cavities in all 4 quadrants and recommended a deep cleaning and several fillings. All sorts of X Rays were taken. For the right upper jaw, they suggested an immediate filling as the cavities were supposedly big and not filling them would eventually lead to getting a root canal done. Even though I was told the cavities were big, I had no sensitivity or any pain in the upper right premolar area at all. Since I wanted to avoid a root canal, I booked an appointment for 6/30/2017 to get the fillings done. Right after the procedure, I started feeling extreme sensitivity in the premolars in which the cavities were filled. I could no longer use the right side of my oral cavity to chew any food. It was extremely painful. The fillings were done by Dr. David. I called up Tooth Spa and took another appointment in which a few more X Rays were taken. Dr. David said that the fillings had gone too close to the nerve and that I would need a root canal if the the pain/sensitivity did not subside in the next 2-3 weeks. He said prior to the filling procedure he had no idea that the cavities were that big. I cant imagine how he did not have an idea of the cavities even though he had all X Rays at his disposal. After the 'filling' procedure, I was left with extreme pain and sensitivity while I had none before the procedure. Now I have to shell out thousands of dollars to get the root canal done, when I did not even need a filling in the first place. The pain and sensitivity has not gone away even after 6 months. It has become worse with the onset of winter. I can't even muster up enough courage, to visit another dentist, to get the root canal done for the fear of being fleeced again. The experience at Tooth Spa has left such a bad scar. Please avoid Tooth Spa if you can. They may be ok for the normal annual cleaning but not for any other procedure. read more

Solid five stars. My entire experience has absolutely no flaw. First star, for most professional customer service I ever had, especially the office manager, Carol. She helped me with my form and patiently explained every term that I had questions with to make sure that they got the correct and necessary information about my teeth before they touch them. I had Dr. Andrew worked on my teeth. He is very gentle and super professional. He explained my teeth problems and offered a few suggestions about how to get them fixed. He was not pushy at all. Totally optional. Second star, for easy access with clear information. You can get on their website and make reservation or call them. If it is your first time, they have a form for you to fill up. Bring it with you before you arrive for your first appointment. They also have free wifi and free drinks. Third star, for kid-friendly atmosphere. Normally kids are afraid of dentists. They got little packages of juice for the kids and they also have all kinds of Disney movies that can play during the kids get their teeth done. Fourth star, for very clean facilities. From the dental equipment, to the customer bathroom, very clean. That's definitely something you wanna see at a dental place. It just makes you feel safe to let them touch your teeth. Fifth star, last but not least, for the dental work they had done. The whole process was not painful at all. Dr. Andrew made a very clear explanation before he started every step. After the dental visit, I have been following Dr. Andrew's suggestion with protecting my teeth. The pain is totally gone and the teeth are definitely stronger now! Best dentist I have ever seen or heard of, hands down. Clean, prompt, and professional. Everyone smiles (with perfect teeth btw) and maybe is even a bit *too* friendly. I get text reminders for my appointments. I am always in and out the door within an hour. There is always parking available. They are flexible with rescheduling if necessary. The receptionists are helpful. They have awesome magazines. They give the most thorough dental examination possible. My experience in the past with dentists have generally been to avoid them like the plague.. Actually, the plague would have been appreciated in some cases. I felt like that person on those "1-800-DENTIST" commercials. However, my first experience at tooth spa was amazingly relaxing. The dentist chair I was in even had a back massager! Since then, I have seen both Dr. Grace and Dr. Dave and both are extremely professional and very detailed in their work. Even thought I still dislike going to a dentist, this definitely makes the experience much more pleasant. The largest compliment I can give is that I recommend them to everyone in my family and they have all been happy! I know they are moving to a bigger office soon so I am excited to see the office (although I must admit I hope it's for something like a regular cleaning or something) However, I feel like I'm setting expectations too high so I will stop here. I have been very happy with my interactions with Tooth Spa! The staff is very friendly, the office is nicely decorated and doesn't feel as dentisty as others, everything is cutting edge technology, and most importantly, I felt Dr. David was very knowledgeable and diligent. I had a difficult situation and he made sure to spend the extra time to ensure things were going well. As for the criticisms of Tooth Spa being like an ATM - I did not compare prices with other places or get a second opinion so I'm not sure. She has a knack for spotting issues before they become painful. #2. articulate - she is very clear in all her explanations. I am able to understand the issues and my options for treatment. #3. care for customer's comfort - This shows especially during fillings. She makes sure that I am very comfortable before we begin. The patient chair is equipped with TV screen, music and gentle massage. When I first walked into the office, I was greeted with a warm and friendly smile. The entire building had a very relaxing, and truly spa-like atmosphere. This was a pleasant surprise, as I tend to get quite nervous at the dentist, so a calming environment was just what I needed. Once I was settled in the chair, I met Dr. Grace Chyuwei. She is by far the most professional and knowledgeable dentist I have ever met. Dr. Chyuwei walked through each step of the procedure, which helped calm my nerves. I explained to her my concerns - I was involved in an accident when I was younger and broke 2 of my front teeth. She provided a very thorough consultation, complete with photographs of the current state of my veneers. Dr. Chyuwei presented all the various options to me, and in the end, we decided to replace my veneers with crowns. I could not be happier about the results! My new teeth look so natural, and the color is a perfect match to my own teeth. I was so happy with the end result, and I can finally smile confidently. The crowns not only look real, but they are much stronger than my former veneers. Dr. Chyuwei even smoothed out a slightly chipped tooth right after she installed my crowns, so I didn't have to schedule another appointment to take care of that. On top of my great experience at Tooth Spa, Esther had gone out of her way to schedule a short-notice appointment for me, which I really appreciated. I have done teeth cleaning twice per year for many years, with the same insurance policy. This Tooth Spa is the FIRST place I had to pay out-of-pocket for teeth cleaning. The problem is that this place threw in "extra cleaning procedure" that are not covered by most insurance, and they did not tell me ahead of time. So when I received my insurance claims, it showed me one of things they did for cleaning is not covered at all. What a surprise. Regular teeth cleaning has standard procedure. My insurance has covered 100% for many years. I really question their business integrity because they don't inform me "extra item" for a simple routine cleaning. They must have done something most dentist don't do for a routine cleaning! I have my claim documents to prove my words. I have never posted a review before, but am so disappointed in the service that I feel the need to speak up now. I have been with Tooth Spa for 3 years and usually schedule for their first appointment at 9. They've improved in this area but for the first year, I was always there before the office even opened, which meant that I had to wait well after my scheduled time to see the doctors. Seems disrespectful to patients and their time. The most recent time, I was scheduled an appointment at 4pm. When I got to the office, Carol the receptionist told me that the doctor was running very behind and that it would be best for me to reschedule. I was outraged but kept it professional and politely said I understood. After all, I needed to get my tooth treated and didn't want to piss them off. This is the ultimate disrespect through. Their office policy is that if you cancel day of, you get fined. But when the doctors have to cancel (even after you are already there!) they have no consequences. They could have at least called me before I took off work early to ask to reschedule. Shows the office is disorganized and doesn't care about its patients. I have always had very good teeth, rarely getting cavities at my dental checkups. I was in grad school for 3 years without having dental checkups and at the end of that time, I only had 1 cavity. Now after changing dentists to Tooth Spa, I suddenly have 3-4 cavities every time I have a checkup. One time, I had 7 cavities!!! Not only that, the last two times I've gotten a cavity filled, they ended up damaging the nerves so I needed a root canal. I have been going to this place for 9 years and never been disappointed. In fact I have been extremely happy and satisfied. Dr Grace and Dr David and very skilled, humble and friendly. Other doctors are very good too. The staff is extremely polite, attentive and committed. Esther is the best! Recently I got deep cleaning done here by Katrina. Her hands are magical and skill level is amazing. I always feared deep cleaning and most of my sessions were painful. But Katrina did such a wonderful job that before I knew it, it was over. The staff is very friendly and competent. Dr. David is friendly, competent and will go the extra mile to help a patient. Dr. Grace is meticulous about her work. There is a high turn over rate of the dental assistant and some of them don't seem to have the experience needed for the job. I agree with some of the reviewers in that one is made to feel like an ATM machine because of emphasis on expensive dental work (ie. porcelain crowns). read more

I highly recommend Dr Grace Chyuwei and Dr. David Chyuwei (siblings). I have an irrational fear of the dentist but after going to them for the last 5 years, I am no longer afraid. Grace is my dentist although I did have David work on me one time because my schedule was too conflicted and I decided to go with David rather than to wait. I've also had Mary Ann and Dr. Wu work on me before and they're great as well. All of them are fantastic dentists and take the time to explain every procedure and answer any questions you have. The staff is amazingly friendly and excellent at what they do. They also have all the latest technology (high definition photographs that they compare next to your x-rays to explain what you are looking at). It's also very comfortable there. There chairs have massagers and there is a screen above you so you can watch movies while they work on you. They even tuck me in with a blanket before they start because they know I get cold. I've been going to tooth spa for about 3-4 years now and have never had a bad experience. Doctors dave and grace have always been patient and understanding, always making sure that Im fully comfortable with everything going on. When issues have come up I feel completely confident in their resolutions and have never doubted a suggestion. During procedures everything is put together to make you as comfortable as possible. When shots were necessary time was taken to numb/prep the area first then the injections themselves were done so slowly and carefully. As long as I'm in the area I will be coming to Toothspa every six months. Not to say that I WANT to come back for anything more than that but at least I know that I'll be well taken care of. read more

The Waiting Room : It's a pleasant place to be in, with comfortable chairs and soothing decor. The first time i visited Finding Nemo was on, which I thought was great. There also is a large, beautiful aquarium. Really every time i've been there I haven't waited very much at all. The Staff: Dr. Grace does the exams and cleanings. She is gentle, precise, detailed, and communicates very well. There is an aura of competence about here that I find soothing, and others might find cold. The first time I went she gave me a cleaning and scheduled me back to have a couple cavities filled. Her brother, Dr. David, did the cavity filling. Of course it wasn't fun, but he did a great job and the procedure was uneventful. I've been back for another cleaning, which was swift (under a half-hour) and painless. read more
