I've been coming to Alan for over three years now I have tried a couple of dentists in between when I changed insurance and have always come back to him. His kind and calm demeanor makes teeth cleaning visits more comfortable and he takes time to answer all my questions. He never pushes for treatments like teeth filling or other but is very through with annual checkups. We do the gum depth check and X-rays annually. He suggested easing my way into flossing using floss picks or trying once a week. This kind of gentle encouragement has turned me into a daily flosser. The front desk staff are also kind. read more

The appointment started out easy enough. The reception area was calm and I didn't wait long. The assistant who brought me back went through the basics and asked about any changes since my last visit. They were pretty focused on their routine and didn't talk much, but they got through the information clearly. When the doctor came in, they asked detailed questions about what brought me in. They seemed to want to get a full picture of what was going on and weren't just jumping to conclusions. I liked that they took time checking the physical signs and followed up with questions during the process. They gave me a few suggestions to try and explained what to look out for moving forward. Dr. Alan Poon and his entire team are THE BEST! I've been coming here for about 4years now. The entire process from scheduling your first appointment to finishing your cleanings is super easy and pleasant. The moment you enter, you are greeted with the friendliest staff in the world! Once you're checked-in, a dental hygienist does the routine cleanup and X-Rays (if you're due for it). Finally, Dr. Poon does the final examination and provides feedback. I've never had to wait too long and they usually see you at your exact appointment time. I love how everything can be done on your personal account on their website -- book appointment, check payments, etc. You can also email or call them and they respond very fast. The front desk staff are also very knowledgeable and can answer all my insurance questions promptly. COVID review: they enforce social distancing, check temperature, and had good air flow. He has never offered unnecessary procedures. He pays attention to even the smallest details. The work he does does not need to be redone. The prices of the service are known in advance and there are never any "surprise" bills. I have used his services with "in network" and "out of network" insurance. I use Cigna insurance and his services were the cheapest I have ever received here. Unfortunately, because my insurance changed again and by their rules I only have to use an "in network" dentist, I have to look for another one. My family (Mom, Dad) and I have been going to Dr. Alan Poon's office since he began his practice.  We used to go to Dr. David Poon (his father) in the same office. Both wonderful dentists.  Dr. Poon's office always does a wonderful job.  The hygienist cleans teeth very thoroughly (spending about an hour cleaning with the doctor doing the final check.)  Dr. Poon explains each procedure very thoroughly while showing you the issue on the xray.  He leaves the ultimate decision up to you.  The front office is very kind, willing to work with your schedule and they explain the costs if you need a procedure done.  I had major dental pain and had to have major dental work done and he always returned my calls  and emails quickly.    I recently brought my 7 year old son here, and they were great with his first cleaning too.  Highly recommend Dr. Alan Poon and his office. read more

Awful! He will make sure you pay for sth before you leave!! He asked me for a 3D image that ironically is not covered by insurance and he demanded, but guess what! After the image(which I am not even sure if he saw it!) he came back and talked through the primary x-ray of my teeth explaining that the root is too weak to be fixed and I need to take it out. I've been coming to Dr. Poon for the last 5 or 6 years. A friend of mine referred him, and boy, am I glad he did! Even when I was living in San Francisco, I'd happily make the drive down to Sunnyvale twice a year to see him. Dr. Poon is incredibly patient and helpful with all my teeth problems (or lack thereof). He explains exactly what he's doing, which goes miles in setting expectations and in putting my nerves at ease. But what I think what I've appreciate the most is his great self-care advice to help me keep my teeth clear of any cavities and to keep my gums from receding prematurely (which I guess I'm genetically predisposed to). Also, he gave me great advice on how to keep my retainers clean, and I haven't had crusty white retainers for years now. You'll have to ask him for his secret ;) I would highly recommend Dr. Poon to anyone and everyone. But hopefully not too many people, otherwise I won't be able to get any more appointments! read more

I've been coming here ever since I was a kid and have had the honor of retaining the "best teeth in the fam" award courtesy of Dr. Poon. Never had a cavity, yo! *pats self on back* There have been several changes over the years, all positive... Then: Older, clunky equipment, outdated interior Now: A more modern office with the newest dentistry tech. Did you know you can now review your x-rays - seconds after it's taken - on a fancy computer as Dr. Poon explains what's going on? Super cool. Then: AWESOME treasure chest with cool prizes for kids... PLUS the receptionist carried cute shiny rings to give out to the girls. I remember collecting one of every gem color after each visit. Now: My prize is a clean and healthy set of teeth... no need for those sticky wall clinger toys anymore! Then: Appointments were kept track on little business cards that could get lost, or post cards were mailed out to your home address as reminders. Now: If you're in their email registry, the office will send several reminders for your appointments. You can also get text notifications on your cell phone. This is the future! Then: Dr. David Poon was head chief dentist. Professional and kind. Now: His son, Alan, has taken over and is just as amazing. Both are very personable, and they are extra thorough by walking through what they're doing to get you those pearly whites! In fact, all the staff are knowledgable, friendly and easy to talk to. I usually go back home in Nor Cal to do a teeth cleaning during the holidays. Not sure what it is about home and clean teeth. I tried to book an appointment with Dr David Poon but he had no availability during my stay so they suggested I go with Dr Alan Poon, his son. I wasn't sure what to expect but it went as perfect as a dentist appointment could go. When we stepped in, Alan told us about the updates they had made to the offices, and the remodeling and new machines him and his dad had added. New machines are always good since you don't want them sticking old bacteria infested crap in your mouth. The assistant ushered me off to take photos of my teeth with these new machines. They are pretty good about telling you the costs up front and if your insurance covers it or not and my PPO did, but just be sure to ask just in case. Alan looked over the xrays and verified that everything was according to what my last dentist said. Then, he did the cleaning himself and was super thorough and gentle and made sure to explain everything he was seeing. I think the explanations were key for me since you never really understand what the dentists are telling their assistants and you always feel like you're being duped. Rest easy, no crazy recommendations (true story, a doctor had once recommended $10k worth of treatments for me). He makes you feel very comfortable, and provides good explanations and tells you areas you should watch out. Definitely recommended. Also. Ladies. I believe the good doctor is single. read more

Our dentist retired several years ago and we have been on a quest to find a good one that we can stick with for as long as we remain in the Bay Area. After going through two horrible dentists and experiences we would prefer to forget, Dr. Poon was recommended to us. My husband checked with our insurance company and they gave him an exceptionally high rating, so we decided to have a our checkup here and see how we felt afterward. Our conclusion is that we have found our next (and hopefully final) dentist. The cleaning was very thorough and Dr. Poon was very nice and explained everything in a way that I could completely understand. The office is small and the staff very friendly and helpful. Even the patients are friendly and talkative. They all sang praises for both Alan and his father, David. When my husband found out that they were both alumni from the same university, I think that pretty much clenched the deal (Haha). We've book our next cleaning together and will return in six months. I'll be honest, I haven't been to the dentist in many years. The thought of going the dentist scares me. I think the reason is because of my bad experiences in the past. So, recently I decided to ask my family and friends to refer me to a good dentist in my area. One of my friends, who I really trust, referred me to Dr Poon. I was a little hesitant to go at first, but I really needed to see a dentist (bleeding gums). So, I decided to take a chance. Staff: My initial impression of the staff was that they were really friendly and helpful and made me feel comfortable. Facilities: I was pleasantly surprised to see the facility was modern and clean. Cleaning Process: Normally I experience pain during cleaning because of my sensitive gums, but Dr. Poon really paid attention to my discomfort and frequently asked whether I was doing okay. He noticeably tried to make my experience a pleasant experience. The only reason I give a 4 star is because I still hate going to the dentist, but I definitely will go back for my next cleaning. read more

I've been looking for a new dentist for a while, and I have finally found one! This office is tiny, but very clean and welcoming. The receptionist are personable and right away remembered who I was from speaking with them on the phone. Dr. Alan was cool too. Right away I noticed his perfect teeth haha, so I knew I was in good hands. He was also very nice and easy to talk with and helped me understand what was going on with my teeth. I LOVE their dental hygienist, Julia though. She was super meticulous, caring, and careful during my cleaning. I usually hate this process, because the water and suction tools are handled poorly. I always have my tongue or cheeks sucked up more than twice or feel like I can't breathe during the process. I even expect to get accidentally poked by their metal toothpick thing at least once, but with Julia, I felt like I could almost sleep through the process. She didn't need me to open my mouth super wide and I didn't feel any pain whatsoever, even though she dug under my gums at some points. She would always check-in with me, to make sure I was ok. (Super gentle, love her!) Definitely recommend them! read more

I just got finished with Dr. Alan Poon and I must say it was a surprising experience. Not that Dr. Poon was significantly different from most dentists, but it was that the small details ended up making all the difference in the world. First of all, Dr. Poon takes the time to explain to you what is happening in very laymen terms. I found that very refreshing and in a way very effective towards prevention. He has a device that has a camera which allowed me to see my cavity on screen. This effectively freaked me out but also makes me REALLY want to do something about it. Every step is explained so that you don't feel at all hesitant about the process and what's happening. I've always felt that the worst part of the dentist was not knowing what's happening in your mouth as the dentist is elbow deep into your business. All you're doing is staring at the ceiling. But with Dr. Poon I felt very engaged in the entire process leaving me less hesitant and exponentially more confident in the entire experience. One last thing is about the office itself. I was pleasantly surprised that the office did not have that standard "dentist" aroma. Good or bad, that "dentist" smell always alerted my gag reflexes. Dr. Poon's office has a very cozy and familiar feel to it. The office is tastefully appointed with what seems like all the new and cool dental gadgets which gives me a sense of confidence. Again, these are minor details but for me it leaves a huge impact on the my time in the dentist chair. I wouldn't say that going to the dentist is the bane of my existence like most people but i still don't enjoy it very much. The surprising comfort of Dr. Poon's office definitely helps ease that pressure of the semi-annual check-up. I had a great experience getting a cleaning at Dr. Alan Poon's office. Dr. Poon is very professional and has an excellent chairside manner. He explains to you everything that he does, e.g., going over your X-rays with you on the display screen and describing polishing of your teeth (apparently dentists always do this at your cleanings, but I didn't know it was called polishing - no one had ever told me). I really appreciated Dr. Poon's sensitivity to my sensitive teeth. He made sure not to apply water or air pressure to those tender spots and asked me throughout the procedure whether I was comfortable (which I was). I'm always afraid of having the cold water sprayed onto my gum line where my gums are receding - it's one of the worst feelings in the world. So instead, Dr. Poon asked Erica, my hygienist, to spray the water into my mouth cavity and let me swish it around myself. Wonderful solution! The water was also a good temperature, not too cold. The cleaning was very thorough. Erica prepared some mouthwash beforehand and placed it next to the chair so that I could rinse my mouth after the polishing. That was nice since the polish generally leaves a gritty feeling in your mouth. Lastly, Dr. Poon showed me proper brushing and flossing techniques, which I somehow did not know for my whole life until now. Call me a nerd, but I'm excited to apply what I learned! The office is newly remodeled with state-of-the-art equipment. All staff members were friendly and knowledgeable. For a good time at the dentist, visit Dr. Poon! read more

I needed to schedule an emergency visit (major tooth pain and used Yelp to find a well reviewed Dentist and ZocDoc to schedule a visit with Dr. Alan Poon. The office is new, the check-in process is smooth, and the equipment, including the Digital x-ray made this dental office visit excellent. Dr. Poon clearly described his diagnoses and the three options that were available to resolve the issue. He laid out the pros/cons of each approach and made sure that I understood the path of least resistance. Dr. Poon was able to abate the pain, and referred me to an Oral Surgeon to have it fully dealt with. Following my visit to the Oral Surgeon, Dr. Poon called that evening to see how I was doing and if everything went smoothly and if I needed anything. That's customer service. Alan Poon is a good friend, which is why I was reluctant to use him as a dentist, but due to some embarrassing pain in my teeth, I decided to visit him during the holiday break. Alan did a great job keeping the appointment professional and did an even better job making sure I was comfortable and aware of what was happening. He also did something no previous dentist did for me, explain to me in general terms where the pain came from and what was needed to resolve the issue. Long story short, the pain is gone, and I will definitely be taking better care of my teeth. Thanks Alan. This review is soooo overdue. Dr. Alan Poon is such a wonderful dentist! I first came to him for a second opinion after my last dentist told me I should have a root canal for a minor chip on my tooth (ludicrous!). Dr. Alan so impressed me with his level-headed exam, diagnosis, and treatment that I switched over to him immediately after. He's thorough, explains things really well, and really cares about his work and his patients. He makes conservative recommendations to truly preserve the health of your teeth, and doesn't pressure you into any of his recommendations. The office is clean and welcoming, without any unnecessary frills, and his treatments were all really affordable. I moved out of the area recently and very sadly had to switch to a different dentist due to the distance, but will happily and heartily recommend Dr. Alan to anyone looking for a dentist in the area! read more

Just got done with my appointment and I gotta say I'm very impressed and pleased! I got here and filled out my paper work and was immediately seen by Dr. Alan Poon. He was very professional and super friendly! I got my X-rays done quickly and without pain, by the hygienist. She was super sweet and friendly too. Dr. Poon explained everything to me about my X-rays in detail so that I completely understood everything that was going on with my teeth. Also, I have a problem with my jaw where it gets locked if its open for too long or too wide and this is the very FIRST time that any dentist actually cared and made sure that i didnt hold my mouth open too long or too wide. I can't tell you how happy that made me because usually dentists in the past have told me that I just need to deal with it because the need my mouth to be opened wide! He made me feel so comfortable during the whole visit. He also showed me the correct ways to brush my teeth and floss just in case I didn't know (which also has not been done with any other dentist in the past they usually just assume you know the correct way and wonder why your teeth are bad haha!). I've been a patient of Alan's father for 25 years. When he told me that he was transitioning his son into the business, I was a little nervous. I've known Dr. Poon since I was 5 years old and it's scary to let go of that type of relationship. However, Alan has his father's gentleness and outgoing personality, so the transition was easy. Alan also has the benefit of having a completely remodeled office with state of the art equipment. His assistant took digital X-Rays and Alan went over each tooth with me on a big monitor that was within easy viewing from the dentist chair. He explains things well and strives to educate you so that you're motivated to be preventative at home. One of the best things that Alan learned from his father is to not do procedures that people don't really need. One of my goals for the new year was to find a new dentist in the south bay (Cupertino / Sunnyvale area). A friend of mine, who switched dentists a couple months prior, recommended Dr. Poon's Dental office. I made the appointment online and everything was super easy. I filled out some paperwork at the office and sat in the chair for a cleaning. Dr. Poon was knowledgeable, gentle with his tools, and gave me a thorough and refreshing cleaning. I started out with the elder Dr. David Poon in 2010 and then transitioned to Alan. The transition was great and I feel safe with Alan. I had a complicated filling from my previous dentist and Alan called his father in for a 2nd opinion. He said that he was never too proud to ask his dad for extra advice. The two agreed that a further procedure would not be necessary at this time. When he filled a couple of cavities during the summer, he offered me a choice of silver or white fillings. I was surprised because most dentists no longer use silver. But he said that he still likes to offer silver as a lower cost alternative just in case. I was then emailed a detailed spreadsheet with the cost of both types of fillings and my insurance coverage to help me make a decision. The only negative aspects of the office are that billing can take months and some of the administrative staff does not speak English very well. Make sure to call in to ensure that they received your payment. Some of my checks were not cashed for an extended period. But I echo the previous reviewers in saying that Alan is very conscientious, up to date on current practices, and adept at explaining procedures in simple terms. Do not let his young age worry you. He is excellent at what he does and will not try to oversell you. His office will even offer discounted pricing to the uninsured for regular cleanings. Try out his practice. Alan Poon is great. I had broke my front teeth for about the 5th time and they scheduled my appointment as soon as possible. My appointment was 30 minutes to closing, but he did not rush my teeth or reschedule another appointment. He stayed for about an hour after closing to make sure my teeth were properly fixed. It's been about 3 weeks since my teeth have been fixed, and I have no experienced any issues with it. I'll start this by saying I've had some very bad luck with dentists in the past. After one that botched my front teeth badly, I had found a biological dentist who I liked, but who retired last year. From there I was highly apprehensive about finding a new dentist. But I looked on yelp and on Zocdoc and a few other places and Dr. Poon was highly recommended. So I made an appointment for a cleaning just to scope it all out. I can't tell you how relieved I was to find that not only is Dr Poon a terrific dentist but he's also someone I would look forward to going to see. That is tall praise given my history.
