When you think about the dentist, what comes into your mind? Pain? Extractions? ROOOT CANALS? Growing up, I spent more time at the dentist than at any other medical office. I loved the familial relationship I had with my dentist, but this positive camaraderie waned over the years as my primary orthodontist took a backseat for newbies who really didn't know how to treat patients properly. And so of course, for me a trip to the dentist became an activity I dreaded because of the inevitable pain, the incessant nagging for me to floss, and the random "procedures" I underwent without much reason. For those of you in the South Bay who share my fear of dentists, there is one orthodontist out there who will change your mind as it did mine: Dr. Doran James in Sunnyvale California! Thanks to a lucky search on Yelp and Guardian's website, I came across this wonderful dentist. Dr. James is located on the corner of Remington and Sunnyvale/Saratoga St. His office is at 3b, tucked in the cluster of buildings behind the gym and Little Caesar's. Parking may be tricky, but there's an underground garage. Right when I walked into this office, I knew I would have a positive experience. And positive experience I had x 100 because of two reasons. First, the dental assistant at the front (was the only one working that day) was super nice and approachable. She's one of those sweet women who have very quiet voices. She walked me through exactly what I needed on my forms and was patient with me when giving me my X-rays. And second, Dr. James was as good as it gets for a dentist. He is very welcoming and approachable; when cleaning my teeth, he asked about me and we had a great conversation. Furthermore, he walked me through EVERYTHING he was doing. And best of all, he didn't nag me to floss! Overall, I had the best possible experience I could have had at one of the places I dreaded going to the most. Everyone was super nice at this office, and you don't have to wait at all since all visits are done via appointment. If you are in the area and need general ortho done, Dr. James is the best! I've been a patient of Dr. Doran's for 6 years. I used to visit a family practice in Fremont but after ownership changed I had to find the goldilocks of dentists. Dr. Doran and his staff are wonderful. The office is clean, well lit, and inviting. I had the worst experience with Doran James, DDS. I simply called to make an appoinment for a dental cleaning with this receptionist over the phone. I first called to see what my quote is by providing my insurance/the plan and the receptionist rudely replied by saying, "we do not give the quote". Then she later asked me to hold for a long time while she was talking to someone else on the phone (idk what she was doing). Then she asked me again what my employer/insurance/plans are again. So I suggested to look up the quote on the system after I provided her all the info, then she said, "oh my gosh..." Once I heard that, I got completely turned off by her customer service. Then she continued by saying, "It's your job to look that up and I have other customers who I need to help". I was really dumbfounded and disatified about the customer service. I was excited to get my dental checked up here since the reviews are very great, but the customer service over the phone was extremely horrible and rude. read more

Just got back from my first visit. Perfect service all around. Every professional on Yelp has at least one freak bad review troll--the bitter fruits on the tree of humanity; that's a non-factor. It had been ten years so I was positive I had cavities, and I would have believed it if he said I had several, but instead he walked me through the xrays and photos on a tour of my perfectly healthy mouth (runs in the family). After moving to Sunnyvale, finding a dentist was on my to-do list - way down at the bottom, and continually being shifted lower. So finally after about 4 years, I decided to bump it up to the top. I found Dr. Doran on Yelp based on his great reviews and convenient location. I'm glad I did! First impression on the phone with Nicole to set up my appointment was great. Nicole is very friendly and efficient. She called to remind me about my appointment and to remind me to fill in the new patient forms (available on their website). When I arrived for my appointment, she knew my name and was happy to see I'd completed all of the forms. The waiting area has very comfortable chairs and a pleasant cozy feeling. I love the blue sky light covers on the ceiling above Nicole's desk and the exam chairs. I got full x-rays and a cleaning. Dr. Doran was excellent, telling me what he was doing and why. He even explained everything on the x-rays and how to tell when small problems have moved into issues that need addressing (and fillings). Even better, other than a few mild comments about how long it had been since my last cleaning, Dr. Doran didn't give me a hard time about my less-than-stellar dental history. This dentist does not even deserve a star. He is most rude I have ever seen and has an appalling attitude. He expects anybody walking into his clinic to have the perfect dental condition so all he has to do is nothing, but charge the insurance and make money. His cleaning procedure was pathetic. He hurts his patients a lot, and the moment you shrill in pain, he does not want to work with you. Its an excuse for his lack of abilities. Pathetic experience. read more

Made an appointment with them as a new patient for a cleaning. They mentioned that insurance only covers one set of x-rays every few years, so I had to send them x-rays from my previous dentist. After being unable to send the x-rays, they told they would have to take a full set on site, at my expense because the insurance doesn't cover it. I asked whether they could just do the cleaning, but they said office policy was that they needed to take the x-rays. I don't think it is ok to force me to pay for x-rays when I simply want teeth cleaning, so I had to cancel the appointment. read more

I know I seem 5 star review happy, but honestly, Dr. Doran and his staff deserve every point of every bright red star! I hadn't been to the dentist in way too long to admit publicly and Dr. Doran didn't give me any guilt about it at all. (Frankly, I expected and deserved the guilt!) He fixed a molar for me that had needed a crown for way too long and I couldn't have been happier with the service. I am very wary of any place with a neon or smiling tooth in the window - and i know you all know what I'm talking about - and his practice is *nothing* like those places. It's in a dental center, and his office is totally clean and professional. His staff is super fabulous too and I can honestly say I love going to the dentist now. Really!!! I recently relocated to the area for work and had to leave behind my dentist of 10+ years. I found Dr. Doran through my dental insurance's website and he was close by so I just went with him. First of all, access to the buildings are super easy. I used to have to drive around repeatedly to find a spot to park at my old place. Secondly, the front office seems to function at a high efficiency that I have not seen in a while. They were super friendly and efficient on following up on trying to get my old dental records, etc. When my old place failed to respond to our multiple calls they said not to worry and they took a full set of films of my teeth and said as my insurance was new and they will get it covered. Here comes the part where the health care provider comes out. Dr. Doran went through all my films and explained to me what certain things meant. He also took pictures and put them on a screen that allowed him to explain also what was going on with my teeth. He explained what could wait and would have to be taken care of in the first year. I left the office feeling cleaned and polished and more informed than normal. Dr. Doran was able to tell me exactly all my dental history without a copy of my old charts from old orthodontic apparatus to where I really had cavities in the past to sealants that were placed prophylactically. I am very happy I have found Dr. Doran and his office staff. I was able to get an appointment within 3 weeks of having my insurance activated. I was also brought to the back in a decent amount of time and I was out of there in about an hour when all was said and done. I am an NP and make my schedule about 2 months in advanced and Dr. Doran's office promised to help me by giving me a call 2 months ahead of time to remind me besides hoping my iPhone calendar will so I can make sure to not schedule myself that day. read more

Dr. Doran has been our family's dentist for decades, ever since he first opened, and I highly recommend him! When I find someone who provides a great service, I believe in continuing to return to their business if at all possible, for many reasons, including for my own good of course, but also to reward their performance, and to build long-lasting relationships. I remember reading a review earlier this year for Dr. Doran, where the reviewer traveled all the way from the North Bay to the South Bay, just for Dr. Doran's treatments, and said it was well worth the trip. Well, I would agree wholeheartedly, and I can even go one better. 7 years ago, we moved to New Mexico, just over 1000 miles away, but I've continued to keep Dr. Doran as my dentist. And yes, when I need dental work, I really do jump on a plane and come back to get treated. Sounds crazy I know, but I just can't give up such a great Doctor and his phenomenal staff! Over the years, my family and I have had a full range of treatments and procedures, all of them well-planned, well-explained up-front and afterwards, and best of all, efficiently and flawlessly executed. Everything, from cleanings, to root canals, crowns, braces, implants, and insurance handling, has been done perfectly as far as I'm concerned. The Doctor and his staff, Nicole and Margaret, have become great friends over the years, as our whole family loves them. They are so friendly, cheerful, and humble, easy to talk to, have a great sense of humor, and thankfully, have been very flexible, for example in dealing with my crazy work schedule at times.
