When I recently spotted Toos & Roos in the Berenstraat I thought they had moved. But it turned out that they've secretly opened a second location. I really like the one at Herengracht, it's neat and cozy. The new one is also nicely decorated. I have to admit that I was quite disappointed by the presentation of the goats cheese sandwich that I had ordered. It's probably the most boring looking one that I got in Amsterdam so far. So what's special about this place? The bread they use is fantastic - perfect texture with a crunchy crust. Now that's what I call ambachtelijk. With your broodje you get a small cup of delicious soup as an amuse. You can of course also order a menu soup. And, same like in their Herengracht location the service is very quick, friendly and attentive. It's the small things that make a difference. And although I know that I'm being manipulated I like the personal little note they leave on the check to make you want to give them a good rating.

Eggplant/hummus sandwich with Parmesan cheese, with a complimentary salad and small pumpkin soup...deeeelish!

Do yourself a favor and order the chick pea soup...so divine I can't even deal!!! Started with the soup then added a roasted chicken sandwich (with avocado and bacon) and an eggplant sandwich. The chicken sandwich was passable but I need a moment for the eggplant/hummus sandwich on gluten free bread...it was so delicious!!! I'm already craving it again. It was perfection, squared.

So good I stopped by twice on a 3 day trip to the city…read more I stopped by on my first visit craving a big, hearty sandwich for a late lunch and thought this might be a good find. Happy to report I was very right. I grabbed one of the many outside seats, took a look at the menu that was entirely in Dutch and waited for the wonderful waitress to quickly translate nearly every item for me. I landed on the chicken club and it hit the spot. I arrived hungry but could still only manage to finish half. Chicken was grilled perfectly into thin slices, soft boiled egg was a new touch that I loved, avocado, lettuce and probably a few other things I am forgetting. Oh, and a handful of crisps on the side. On my next visit, it was my last night in Amsterdam and I still haven't tried the infamous fries. I stopped in around 9:30 for a late night snack and a hot ginger tea. The fries were the perfect fries! Thin, crispy, salty. I loved. I also can get behind the mayo thing they do here, even though I really am a ketchup loyalist. Anyway, lunch or dinner or late night snack, this is a good spot. You'll like the foot and you'll love sitting outside people watching, reading your book, whatever.
